Example

A drugstore chain's buying team is unusually enthusiastic about a new skincare line, and the enthusiasm is worth distrusting precisely because it is so uniform. The table breaks it into columns. Halo: a well-known dermatologist's name is on the box — but did she formulate it or license her name? Aesthetic: the packaging is beautiful, which moves nothing about efficacy. Status borrowing: it is stocked in a famous luxury spa. Contamination fear (taint): a rival product in the same category was recently recalled, dragging category sentiment down. Evidence-bearing: one small independent efficacy panel, thin and unreplicated.

Rated side by side, the picture inverts. The glow was almost entirely halo and status; the only evidence column is weak and stands alone. The confounding probe flags that the spa placement and the dermatologist name tend to co-occur with premium products without causing them to work. The buy is downgraded to conditional, pending real test data — the affect columns are set aside, and the one thin evidence cell is judged on its own.

How it works

  • One column per spillover type, each rated for strength and valence, so a strong halo and a strong taint don't silently cancel into a bland "mixed."
  • The independence probe sits beside the halo columns, asking whether a prestige source merely correlates with quality (a confound — good labs and good marketing travel together) rather than warranting it.
  • A counterassociation column logs the opposing pulls — the taint against the halo, the reassuring fact against the contamination fear — so decomposition is not one-sided.

Tuning parameters
