Harvest-and-stop protocol — instantiates Compounding Leverage

The periodic decision of how much accumulated gain to take out now versus leave compounding — set so harvesting never draws the productive base below the rate it can regrow.

Compounding that is never harvested produces nothing usable, and compounding harvested too hard collapses. Harvest is the rule that resolves that tension: it takes accumulated gain without eating the base's capacity to regrow. Its defining move is to separate the base from its yield and draw only (a share of) the yield, with a stop that trips before the base is impaired. Among the archetype's mechanisms it owns the withdraw-and-stop side of the loop — distinct from those that build the base or measure its rate — and it explicitly weighs taking value now against the option value of letting the base grow larger first.

Example

A community-managed fishery has a stock that compounds through breeding. The harvest rule is set near the maximum sustainable yield: each season the community takes roughly the surplus the stock regrows, and never touches the breeding base.[n1] The temptation is a single big year — take far above the surplus while prices are high — but that draws down the breeding stock, and the following seasons' yields collapse with it. The rule holds the line: harvest the increment, protect the base.

The same protocol carries two more judgments. It reviews distribution — who receives the catch, and what spillover the harvest imposes on the surrounding ecosystem — and it weighs the option value of leaving more in the water this year as a bet on a larger, more resilient stock later. The structure is identical to an endowment spending rule that draws only a few percent a year so the corpus keeps compounding: take the yield, guard the principal.

How it works

  • Separate base from yield. Establish what is the regenerating base and what is this cycle's harvestable surplus, so the two are never confused.
  • Harvest the yield, on a cadence. Take a defined share of the surplus periodically, rather than opportunistically drawing down whatever is there.
  • Set a base-protection floor. A stop or brake trips before the base falls below the level it needs to regrow at the target rate.
  • Review distribution and hold the option. Decide who benefits and check spillovers; keep the choice to reinvest more open when a larger base is worth more than the harvest.

Tuning parameters

  • Harvest fraction — the share of yield taken versus left to compound. Higher realizes more value now but slows future compounding.
  • Base-protection floor — the level below which harvesting halts. A higher floor is safer but leaves more on the table.
  • Cadence — how often harvest and rebalance occur, trading responsiveness against stability and overhead.
  • Distribution rule — who receives the harvested value and how spillovers onto others are handled.
  • Regime trigger — the signals (saturation, decay, a stalling rate) that flip the stance from reinvest toward harvest.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it realizes value without killing the goose: it prevents both hoarding — compounding forever with nothing ever taken out — and overharvest that collapses the base. It is what turns an impressive trajectory into usable results while keeping the loop alive.

Its failure mode is harvesting the base rather than the yield — mistaking capital for income — which quietly reverses the very compounding it is meant to realize. The mirror failure is never harvesting at all, compounding for its own sake until the accumulation is a proxy for value rather than value. The classic misuse is raising the harvest to hit a near-term target while drawing down the base to cover it. The discipline that guards against all three is to define the base-protection floor first, take only yield, and tie the stop rule to the health of the base rather than to a target number.
