A library compounds only if what enters it is findable and trusted; a pile of documents no one can retrieve is not a base, so the mechanism lives or dies on curation and retrieval rather than on sheer volume.

Example

A corporate law firm keeps re-drafting the same indemnity and liability-cap clauses from memory on every deal. They build a clause bank: each negotiated clause that survives review is filed with metadata — jurisdiction, counterparty type, the fallback positions that were actually accepted. On the next deal an associate pulls a vetted clause in minutes instead of reconstructing it. Over roughly two years the bank covers most standard matters, drafting time per deal falls, and the base grows with every engagement.

The instructive part is the decay. Without an owner pruning superseded clauses, the bank fills with stale and duplicate versions, associates stop trusting it, and they quietly keep private copies — the retained gain leaks straight back out. So the firm assigns a knowledge partner to review quarterly and deprecate anything outdated. That curation, not the initial capture, is what keeps the library a growing base rather than an archive.

How it works

  • Capture with a bar. An output becomes an asset only when it clears an admission standard (general enough, clean enough, worth reusing) — otherwise the library dilutes.
  • Curate for retrieval. Metadata, tagging, and structure are the real product; an asset that can't be found doesn't compound.
  • Reuse by default. New work starts by searching the library, so the base is actually drawn on rather than admired.
  • Deprecate actively. Stale and duplicate assets are pruned, because an untrusted library is abandoned.

Tuning parameters

  • Admission bar — how polished and general something must be before it enters. Higher builds trust but admits fewer assets; lower maximizes coverage but breeds noise.
  • Granularity — whole templates versus atomic components. Finer pieces recombine into more situations but multiply what must be maintained.
  • Curation cadence and ownership — who prunes, and how often. More curation means less decay but real standing overhead.
  • Findability investment — how much goes into tagging and search. More lifts reuse; too little leaves a base no one can reach.
  • Access scope — team-only versus org-wide. Wider sharing compounds faster but demands more governance.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that each project starts from a larger base than the last: onboarding is faster, output is more consistent, and hard-won work is no longer thrown away at the end of every engagement. It is the most literal instantiation of a productive base in the archetype.

Its central failure mode is decay. Assets go stale, duplicate, and drift out of reach; the library rots the same way code does when nobody maintains it,[n1] and once trust is gone people fork private copies and the base fragments. The classic misuse is measuring the library by assets added rather than assets reused — which rewards hoarding and accelerates the rot. The discipline that guards against this is to assign a curation owner, measure reuse rather than size, and deprecate aggressively.

Notes

A library is a base, not a loop. It only compounds if something keeps feeding curated assets in and something keeps reuse high; on its own it is an archive that quietly decays.
