Checklist — instantiates Independent Convergence Recognition and Transfer Design
A fixed screen of known transmission channels — shared standards, data, tooling, vendors, staff movement — run against a candidate recurrence to rule out copying before it is called independent convergence.
Most claimed convergence is really quiet copying that nobody bothered to look for. The Hidden Diffusion Checklist is the standardized screen that looks. It is a fixed list of transmission channels — the specific paths by which one case could have gotten the solution from another — run item by item against a candidate recurrence: shared standards, common libraries or tooling, the same vendor default, a shared dataset or benchmark, a shared consultant, staff who moved between the cases, a conference or paper both saw. Its defining property is that it is a checklist, not an investigation: the same channels every time, a coverage guarantee that none of the usual copying routes was skipped, producing a rule-out record rather than a bespoke history. It exists to convert "we couldn't find any copying" from a comfortable assumption into a documented, repeatable negative screen.
Example¶
Two fintech startups, on opposite coasts, independently ship near-identical fraud-scoring models — the same handful of features, weighted almost the same way — and one team wants to cite the match as evidence that these features are the natural fraud signal. The checklist runs the channels. Shared standard? No mandated schema. Shared tooling? Different ML stacks. Shared vendor default? Yes, flag — both buy the same third-party device-fingerprint feed, whose documentation recommends exactly those features, which alone could explain most of the overlap. Shared benchmark data? Both trained partly on the same public fraud dataset. Staff movement? An engineer left the first company for the second eighteen months ago (the adoption trace lands squarely on a copy path). The screen's verdict: this is not independent convergence, it is a shared vendor recommendation plus a plausible personnel transfer. The natural-signal claim is withdrawn before it misleads anyone.
How it works¶
- Run every channel, every time. Walk the fixed inventory — standards, data, tooling, vendor defaults, advisors, personnel, publications, direct contact — without skipping items that "obviously" don't apply; the skipped item is the one that bites.[n1]
- Flag, don't yet judge. Each channel yields a clean / flagged / unknown mark; the checklist's job is coverage and disclosure, not the final independence verdict.
- Trace adoption paths on any flag. Where a channel flags, follow the concrete route — who adopted from whom, when — turning a suspicion into a documented transmission path or clearing it.
- Emit a rule-out record. The output is a signed-off screen showing which copy routes were checked and cleared, so downstream confidence rests on a documented negative, not an assumption.
Tuning parameters¶
- Channel list breadth — how many transmission paths the checklist enumerates. A longer list catches exotic copy routes but costs time and produces more false flags to clear.
- Flag sensitivity — how weak a hint trips a flag. High sensitivity rarely misses real copying but raises the clearing burden; low sensitivity is fast but lets subtle diffusion through.
- Trace depth on flags — how far an adoption path is chased before it is called cleared or confirmed. Deeper tracing resolves ambiguity but can turn a screen into a full investigation.
- Unknown-handling stance — whether an un-checkable channel counts as clean or as an open risk. Treating unknowns as risk is conservative and honest; treating them as clean flatters the independence claim.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is coverage and repeatability: because the channels are fixed, the checklist catches the "obvious in hindsight" copy path a bespoke inquiry would have skipped, and two analysts running it reach comparable results. It is the cheapest high-yield defense against the archetype's single most common failure — hidden inheritance dressed up as convergence.
Its failure mode is the false sense of completeness: a checklist can only screen the channels on it, so a novel transmission path — a shared upstream model, an unlisted community forum — sails straight through a fully "clean" screen. A related misuse is checking the boxes ritually without actually tracing the flags, so the record looks rigorous while the diffusion goes unexamined. The guarding discipline is to keep an explicit "other channels" line that forces a search beyond the list, and to require that every flag be genuinely traced or marked unknown — never silently cleared.
How it implements the components¶
hidden_transmission_check— the checklist is this check: the fixed, coverage-guaranteed screen of the channels by which the solution could have been copied rather than independently arrived at.adoption_trace— on any flagged channel it follows the concrete who-got-it-from-whom path, documenting or clearing the specific route of transmission.
This checklist screens lateral copying channels but does not build the open-ended provenance record: the lineage_independence_map and the independent_case_registry are the work of Lineage Independence Audit, its nearest independence-checking twin, which maps each case's full history rather than ticking a fixed channel list. It also does not name or classify the shared form itself (candidate_convergent_form).
