Joint Gaze or Attention Probe¶

Actively tests whether participants are attending to the same referent by eliciting gaze, cursor, answer, or task-response evidence.
Nods and silence are the two great liars of joint attention: both look like agreement and both routinely hide divergence. Joint Gaze or Attention Probe refuses to accept them, and instead elicits evidence — a directed question, a "where's your cursor," a quick task whose answer only lands if the person is on the right referent. Its defining move is active diagnosis: it does not wait for participants to volunteer their focus (as a point-and-confirm ritual does), nor does it hand them a frame to read (as a trace does); it probes, and reads the response to decide whether joint attention actually holds. It is the check that treats "they seem aligned" as an untested hypothesis.
Example¶
A teacher is running a live online lesson on a labeled diagram of the heart, and the class is quiet and apparently attentive. Rather than trust the stillness, she probes: "Everyone put your cursor on the vessel carrying oxygen-poor blood to the lungs — go." Twenty cursors move. Most land on the pulmonary artery; four drift to the pulmonary veins, and two hover uncertainly over the aorta. In three seconds she has evidence that a quarter of the class is attending to the wrong feature — a split that "any questions? ... okay, moving on" would never have surfaced. She re-anchors those students before continuing, having turned invisible divergence into a visible, actionable reading.
How it works¶
- Design a discriminating probe. The prompt is built so that a correct response is only possible if the participant is on the intended referent — a question, a cursor task, a gaze target, a one-line answer.
- Elicit from the set. The probe is issued to those whose focus matters; responses are collected, not assumed.
- Read the divergence. Wrong, absent, or scattered responses localize who has drifted and often onto what, distinguishing genuine joint attention from its appearance.
- Feed the result forward. The finding tells the group whether to proceed or to re-anchor — the probe diagnoses, it does not itself fix.
The assessment's discipline is discrimination: a probe that a distracted person could answer correctly by luck or rote proves nothing.
Tuning parameters¶
- Probe discriminating power — how sharply a correct response requires being on the right referent. Sharper probes catch subtle misattention but take more thought to design.
- Overtness — an open "where are you looking?" versus a covert task whose framing hides that attention is being tested. Covert probes resist gaming but can feel like traps.
- Coverage — probing everyone versus a sample. Full coverage finds every outlier; sampling scales but can miss the quiet drifter.
- Role targeting — a general probe versus one aimed at what a specific role should be noticing. Role-targeted probes catch role-specific tunnel vision but must be tailored.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it is the only mechanism here that measures joint attention rather than establishing or asserting it — it converts a comfortable assumption of alignment into evidence, and localizes the split when there is one. It operationalizes the developmental concept of joint attention: not merely that two parties look at a thing, but that their attending-together can be checked.[n1] It is invaluable in teaching, inspection, and training, where the cost of a silent quarter-of-the-room misattending compounds downstream.
It misleads when the probe is answerable without genuine attention — a leading question, a task solvable by rote — so it certifies alignment that is not there. Its classic misuse is probing so relentlessly that participants feel quizzed and interrogated, which poisons the very engagement it is trying to verify. The guarding discipline is to design probes that truly discriminate, to space them so they diagnose rather than harass, and to remember the probe reveals shared reference, not shared understanding.
