Known-Unknowns Inventory Prompt¶
Reflection prompt — instantiates Knowledge Threshold Crossing Communication
A prompt that asks learners to name what they now know they do not know and link each item to a next step.
A Known-Unknowns Inventory Prompt is a self-directed writing prompt that turns a vague, overwhelming sense of "there's so much I don't get" into a finite, named list. The learner answers it alone, in their own words: what can you now see that you don't yet know how to do? Its defining move is learner-generated enumeration — the value is not in someone else diagnosing the gaps but in the learner discovering they can now name them, one by one, and tagging each with a first thing to try. It is not a coach's conversation, not a mentor's critique, and not a facilitated session; it is a prompt on a page or in a form, answered privately, that converts diffuse overwhelm into concrete, ownable items. The act of naming a gap you couldn't have named a month ago is itself the reframe: you are not more ignorant, you can simply see more of the territory.
Example¶
A culinary student three weeks into a sauce module feels underwater. Everything the chef-instructor does looks like a blur of adjustments she can't reproduce. Instead of stewing in "I'm just not good at this," she opens the module's reflection prompt: List the specific things you now realize you don't know how to control. For each, write the smallest next thing you could try. She writes: (1) I can't tell when a beurre blanc is about to break — try: hold one deliberately near the edge and watch the signs. (2) I don't know how much reduction is "enough" — try: reduce three batches to different points and taste side by side. (3) I can't season by eye yet — try: measure, then taste, then guess-and-check for a week. The prompt makes clear there are no wrong answers and nobody else reads the list unless she wants them to. Twenty minutes later the panic has a shape: not a fog, but seven nameable things, each with a handle. She hasn't learned them yet — but she has stopped mistaking the fog for a verdict on her talent.
How it works¶
- Prompt for the newly visible. The wording asks specifically for gaps the learner can now perceive but couldn't before — surfacing the awareness that grew, rather than cataloguing every conceivable deficiency.
- One item, one handle. Each named unknown gets paired with a single concrete first move, so the list reads as a set of openings rather than a pile of failures.
- Keep it private and low-stakes. The prompt is answered alone and ungraded, explicitly framed so that admitting "I don't know X" carries no cost — which is what lets the honest list get written at all.
Tuning parameters¶
- Item cap — how many unknowns the prompt asks for (three? ten? unbounded?). A cap forces prioritization and prevents an avalanche; too low a cap hides real breadth.
- Specificity demand — whether vague entries ("I don't get sauces") are accepted or the prompt pushes for operational gaps ("I can't tell when an emulsion is breaking"). More specificity yields actionable items but takes more effort.
- Next-step coupling — whether each item must carry a first move or the list can stand alone. Requiring a handle keeps it forward-facing; making it optional lowers friction for a first pass.
- Privacy setting — fully private, shared with a mentor, or posted to a cohort. More sharing enables help but raises the stakes of admitting ignorance and can suppress candor.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it does the archetype's single most useful conversion — vague overwhelm into a named, finite, ownable inventory — using nothing but a well-worded question. It exploits the fact that much of the dip is the illusion of explanatory depth[n1] collapsing: the learner is discovering that what felt understood was never articulable, and writing the gaps down makes that discovery feel like acquiring a map rather than losing ground.
Its failure mode is that a badly framed prompt can deepen the very demoralization it should relieve. An uncapped, deficit-toned list ("everything you can't do") turns awareness into an avalanche and reads as a scorecard of inadequacy. The classic misuse is treating the finished inventory as a verdict rather than a starting map — grading the learner on the length of their own gap list. The guarding discipline is to cap and prioritize items, require a next move on each, and frame the whole exercise as evidence of growing perception — the list you couldn't have written before.
How it implements the components¶
known_unknown_inventory— its direct product: the learner's own enumerated list of concrete, newly visible gaps, each tagged with a first move.psychological_safety_container— the prompt's private, ungraded, no-wrong-answers framing is what makes it safe to write an honest list of ignorance at all.
It does not implement next_step_mastery_scaffold — tagging each item with a first move stops at a handle, not a sequenced practice plan; building that is Calibrated Next-Step Plan's job. And unlike Complexity-Reveal Debrief, which facilitates a group through a specific expert exposure, this is self-directed private reflection — it does not implement expert_modeling_sample.
