Confidence Rating Rubric — Converts felt certainty into a graduated, evidence-anchored scale, so confidence is reported against what the evidence actually supports — and a low rung mandates more checks before commitment.
Decision-Process Review — Examines how one decision was reasoned — assumptions, alternatives, evidence, confidence — and grades the process quality separately from how the outcome happened to turn out.
Design Discovery Task — A pre-solution investigation that forces a team to surface and suspend its assumptions about users, gather evidence about real needs, and reframe the problem before anyone designs an answer.
Field Investigation — Situated evidence-gathering — observation, measurement, and interviews taken at the real site — paired with a discipline for judging which of those findings are trustworthy enough to build on.
Reasoning Retrospective — After an effort is complete, reconstructs how the reasoning actually unfolded to decide what future strategy should change — guarding against tidy, outcome-driven hindsight.
Strategy Checklist — A fixed menu of failure-mode checks and candidate reasoning moves you scan when stuck, turning a vague sense that thinking has stalled into a concrete next adjustment.

Guided Research Question — A deliberately engineered opening question — narrow enough to act on, open enough to require evidence, and pitched at what learners already believe — that gives an inquiry its direction without giving away its answer.
Horizon-Scan-to-Story Cycle — Takes raw weak signals from the edges of a domain and works them into short future stories the group can argue with — turning scanning inputs into practice material.
Investigative Workshop — A facilitated, time-boxed session that walks a whole group through an inquiry together — assigning roles so every voice contributes evidence, and pacing the room through framing, analysis, and synthesis.
Learner-Generated Explanation — Requires the learner to produce an account of the material in their own words or representation, so the act of composing it forces knowledge to organize — and exposes any phrase memorized without a model behind it.
Metacognitive Coaching — An external partner asks process-level questions during the work, helping the thinker sharpen the reasoning goal and choose a strategy adjustment rather than solving the problem for them.
Stage-Appropriate Feedback Script — A mentor script that validates the threshold crossing while naming concrete gaps and practice actions.
Synthesis Debrief — A structured closing conversation, held after the inquiry ends, that pulls experience into explanation — what changed in the learner's model, what remains uncertain, and where the finding transfers.

Anticipatory Governance Exercise — Puts participants in the seats of a governing body and makes them decide as a future unfolds around them, so future-sensitive judgment becomes a rehearsed governance habit.
Backcasting Practice Cycle — Fixes a vivid future endpoint, then reasons backward step by step to the present — repeated as a cycle so the habit of tracing possibility into action takes hold.
Discovery Learning with Checkpoints — Open, self-paced exploration kept honest by spaced checkpoints that catch drift, unsafe paths, and premature closure without taking the discovery away from the learner.
Inquiry Activity — Drives model-building from an open question or puzzle: the learner commits a prediction, generates their own evidence, and revises — so understanding is earned by investigation rather than received.
Misconception Confrontation Prompt — Confronts one specific false belief with a single discrepant event or counterexample the old model cannot explain, converting the surprise into a revision the learner makes for themselves.
Problem-Based Learning Case — An ill-structured, realistic scenario that carries its question inside it — deliberately missing information — so learners must decide what to investigate and defend a recommendation from the evidence they assemble.
Project-Based Learning Task — Sets a sustained, authentic deliverable a team can only complete by selecting, representing, and connecting concepts — so understanding is built and revised in the service of making something real.
Reflective Exercise — A structured looking-back that makes the learner compare what they expected with what actually happened and integrate a revised principle to carry forward — operating on experience they already had, not any it supplies.
Scenario Learning Program — Uses one curated set of divergent scenarios as the learning medium, walking a group through comparing them and tying the contrast to a live decision.
Simulation and Debrief — Manufactures a safe, high-fidelity synthetic experience and then converts it into a revised model through a structured debrief — the debrief, not the simulation, is where the learning lands.

Novice-to-Aware Stage Marker — A visible marker in a learning path that labels the transition from initial fluency to awareness of complexity.

Record, Log & Register¶

A durable, usually accumulating account of actual events, decisions, custody, exceptions, or state transitions whose value depends on history, provenance, or accountability.

Learning Journal — A running personal log of reasoning choices, confidence, and errors, kept at a steady cadence so lessons accumulate and patterns in one's own thinking become visible over time.
Progress-Evidence Log — A lightweight record of better questions, improved error detection, corrected misconceptions, and new diagnostic ability.
Reflection Journal or Learning Log — A personal, dated record where an individual tracks how their own futures thinking shifts over time — making capability growth visible to the one person it lives in.

Representation, Specification & Plan¶

A non-executable information artifact that externalizes understood, desired, or future structure, including maps, matrices, templates, checklists, specifications, reports, plans, and schedules.

Calibrated Next-Step Plan — A plan linking known unknowns to practice tasks, feedback channels, and criteria for updating confidence.
Inquiry Project — A multi-week deliverable that packages a whole investigation into one accountable output — a synthesis whose claims are explicitly tied to evidence and whose implications the learner must state.
