Example

A flight crew trains an engine failure just after takeoff — a situation you cannot ethically arrange in a real aircraft. In a full-motion simulator, the scenario runs with genuine time pressure: the failure hits at the worst moment, alarms fire, and the crew must decide and act. The simulator has done its job of producing a vivid experience, but no learning has landed yet. That happens next, in the debrief. With the recording replayed, the instructor does not lecture; the crew reconstructs its own decisions — why the captain reached for one checklist before another, why a call was missed — and revises both the procedure and the shared mental model of how the failure unfolds. A crew that flew the scenario and then went home would have rehearsed some motions; the crew that flew it and debriefed it walks away with a reorganized understanding of the emergency. The scenario supplied the experience; the debrief supplied the meaning.

How it works

  • Design a scenario that safely reproduces the real pressures and cues. The fidelity that matters is the fidelity of the decisions, not necessarily the physics.
  • Let the learner act with real stakes-feel and no real consequences, generating a genuine experience to reason about.
  • Capture what happened — recordings, logs, observer notes — so the debrief works from evidence rather than memory.
  • Debrief as reconstruction. Replay decisions, surface the reasoning behind them, and revise the model or procedure. The debrief is facilitated inquiry into "why did we do that," not a verdict.[1]

The whole protocol is arranged around a single conviction: the debrief is the mechanism, and the simulation is the raw material it consumes.

Tuning parameters

  • Fidelity — higher physical and psychological realism deepens engagement but costs money and can overload novices; match it to what the learning actually requires.
  • Scenario stakes — enough pressure to make decisions feel real, not so much that learners freeze and stop reasoning.
  • Debrief style — facilitated inquiry (the crew reconstructs) builds ownership; instructor-led verdict is faster but tends toward compliance over understanding.
  • Timing — debriefing immediately, while the experience is fresh, is standard; delay lets detail decay.
  • Re-run — whether the scenario is flown again after revision, to test that the new model holds under the same pressure.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is building judgment under pressure for situations you cannot safely, cheaply, or repeatably encounter for real — emergencies, rare failures, high-consequence decisions — and doing so in a place where mistakes teach instead of harm.

Its failure mode is simulation without debrief: the scenario runs, everyone feels they learned something, and behavior is rehearsed while no model changes — the exact non-example the archetype warns against. A second failure is a debrief that lectures rather than lets the crew reconstruct, which forfeits the ownership the whole protocol exists to build. The classic misuse is treating the simulation score as the outcome, as though performing the scenario were the goal rather than the revised understanding it was meant to produce. The discipline that guards against this is to protect debrief time as non-negotiable and to run it as reconstruction — the crew explaining their own reasoning — not as critique delivered at them.

Notes

The debrief is the mechanism's center of gravity, which is easy to under-resource: the simulator is expensive and visible, so budgets and attention flow to it, while the debrief — cheap to run and easy to cut when time is short — is where the actual model change happens. A program that invests in fidelity and skimps on debrief has bought an impressive rehearsal engine and left the learning on the table.
