Case-Based Learning Sequence¶
Instructional sequence — instantiates Active Knowledge Construction
Builds a portable rule of judgment by having learners work and contrast a graded series of concrete cases, so the governing principle is induced from real contexts and tested on a fresh one rather than stated up front.
A Case-Based Learning Sequence teaches a principle by ordering — instead of asserting it — a curated set of concrete cases that the learner works through and, crucially, compares. Its defining move is induction by contrast: the rule is never handed over as a definition; it is what the learner is forced to abstract once two cases that look alike turn out to demand opposite judgments, or two that look different turn out to share a hidden structure. Because the cases are ready-made and chosen to straddle the boundary of the concept, the sequence front-loads exactly the messy contextual cues an expert actually reads, and the learner's task is to discover which cues matter. That is what separates it from illustrating a stated rule with an example: here the cases are the argument, and the understanding a learner leaves holding is the rule they built to reconcile them.
Example¶
A first-year law class studies when a contract is actually formed. Rather than lecture the doctrine, the instructor assigns a graded run of cases. The first is clean: an offer, a mailed acceptance, a deal. The second looks nearly identical, but the acceptance is posted just after a revocation is already in transit — and it resolves the opposite way. Students who predicted the second case like the first are wrong, and the contradiction is the whole point: it forces them to see that the operative cue is not "did the parties agree" but when each communication took legal effect. A third and fourth case push the boundary further — a public reward offer, a negotiation conducted by email. By comparing across the set, the class abstracts a rule about effective timing that no single case could have taught. The sequence closes with a fresh, unseen fact pattern: the students apply their induced rule cold, and where it holds they have a portable doctrine, not a memorized story.
How it works¶
- Curate a graded case set that straddles the boundary. Choose cases whose surface features vary while the deep structure is held constant (and vice versa), so the contrast points squarely at the operative cue.
- Work each case on its own terms first, committing to a reading before the next case is revealed.
- Compare and contrast to abstract the rule. The learning happens in the friction between cases — a prediction that fails against the next case is what forces the interpretive rule to reorganize.
- Test on a fresh, unseen case. A held-out fact pattern checks whether what was abstracted is a portable rule or just a memory of the training cases.
The power is in the spacing and contrast of the set, not in any single case; a lone case, however vivid, teaches an anecdote.
Tuning parameters¶
- Contrast distance — near cases sharpen a fine boundary; far-flung cases build broad transfer but can blur the very boundary they were meant to teach.
- Number of cases — more cases make the induced rule more robust and buy less time for each; too few invites over-generalization from coincidental features.
- Case sourcing — instructor-curated cases guarantee the boundary is covered; learner-collected cases raise ownership but may miss the discriminating case.
- Rule stated vs. induced — naming the rule up front speeds coverage but removes the construction that makes it stick.
- Sequencing — interleaving contrasting cases forces discrimination; blocking similar cases feels easier but hides the boundary.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is building the contextual judgment a stated rule can never convey — the ability to read a new situation for the cues that matter, which is what "understanding" means in a case-rich domain like law, medicine, or management. It transfers because it was learned across variation in the first place.
Its failure mode is that learners latch onto the surface features of the cases instead of their deep structure — remembering the reward-for-a-lost-dog rather than the doctrine — so a homogeneous case set quietly teaches the wrong invariant.[n1] The classic misuse is teaching from a single "war story" as though one case were a rule, which produces confident over-generalization. The discipline that guards against this is deliberate variation: hold the deep structure constant while changing irrelevant surface features (and the reverse) so that the only thing the contrast can point to is the real cue.
How it implements the components¶
experiential_task— the cases are the meaningful material the learner interprets; working and comparing them is the experience.model_revision— every contrast that defeats a prediction forces the learner to reorganize the interpretive rule, which is the sequence's central transformation.transfer_application— the closing held-out case checks that the induced rule is portable rather than bound to the training set.
It works from ready-made cases, so it does not build a sustained deliverable that forces representation_choice and social_explanation_exchange — that is Project-Based Learning Task, its nearest experiential twin, which differs by making learners construct something real together rather than compare given cases — nor does it manufacture the experience and close it with a debrief (reflection_prompt — that is Simulation and Debrief).
