A Learner-Generated Explanation makes the learner produce an account of the material — in their own words, a diagram, or an analogy — rather than recognize, select, or restate a given one. Its defining trait is that the value lives in the generation itself: composing a coherent explanation forces latent, half-formed knowledge to organize, and any place the learner can only echo the source's vocabulary is exposed on the spot as un-owned. It is diagnostic and constructive at once — explaining is simultaneously how the learner discovers that a piece wasn't really understood and how they repair it. Where other mechanisms give the learner something to do or a belief to confront, this one asks only for an account, and treats the quality of that account as both the test and the teacher.

Example

A new engineer joins a team and reads the documentation for the service's permission model — roles, scopes, token exchange. She can pass a quiz on the terms. Her onboarding buddy then asks her to do something the docs did not: explain, in your own words, what happens when a request with an expired token hits an endpoint that requires an elevated scope — and why. Composing the answer, she gets three sentences in and stalls: she can name "token refresh" and "scope elevation" but cannot say how they connect, because she has been holding two memorized labels with no causal bridge between them. The stall is the finding. It tells her exactly where her model has a hole a quiz would never have surfaced, and reconciling the new account against what she already knew about ordinary authentication is what finally fuses the pieces into a working model she can reason from.

How it works

  • Prompt for a self-authored account of a target — "explain this to a newcomer," "in your own words, why does this work," "walk me through what happens and why" — not "summarize" or "restate."
  • Force the connective tissue. The learner must supply the becauses and therefores; the discipline of building the links is what turns inert facts into a model.
  • Read the account for hollowness. Fluent restatement of source phrasing, hand-waving over a step, or a stall all mark where the knowledge is un-owned.
  • Reconcile with prior knowledge. The learner squares the new account against what they already believed, so the explanation integrates rather than floats as a separate island.[n1]

Tuning parameters

  • Audience and register — explaining to a novice forces deeper articulation than explaining to an expert, who can be trusted to fill gaps; the harder audience surfaces more.
  • Representation freedom — prose, a diagram, an analogy, or a worked walk-through; a freer choice of representation lets the learner externalize the model in the form they actually hold it in (a Concept Map is one such form).
  • Prompt stance — why and how prompts elicit causal structure; what and summarize prompts invite recitation.
  • Self vs. peer audience — explaining to another person raises stakes and honesty; explaining to oneself is cheaper and still effective.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is puncturing the illusion of understanding — the fluent familiarity that reading and recognition breed but comprehension does not. Because the learner must generate the account, there is nowhere for an un-built connection to hide, and the same act that reveals the gap begins to close it.

Its failure mode is explanation theater: a learner can produce an account that sounds right — polished, on-vocabulary, aimed at the expected script — while the underlying model stays hollow, and an evaluator who rewards fluency certifies the emptiness. The classic misuse is accepting a confident restatement of the source as evidence of understanding. The discipline that guards against this is to prompt for why/how in the learner's own words and to check that the account genuinely integrates with prior knowledge rather than reproducing the source's phrasing — a fresh analogy or a correct answer to an unrehearsed "what if" is the tell that a model, not a script, is doing the work.

How it implements the components

  • model_articulation — the mechanism's whole output is a self-authored, inspectable account of the learner's current understanding.
  • meaning_integration_check — reconciling that account against prior knowledge tests whether the new material has fused into the learner's existing framework or is floating unattached.

It asks for a fresh self-authored account, so it does not structure retrospection over a past experience (reflection_prompt — that is Reflective Exercise, its nearest twin, which shares the integration check but centres on looking back rather than composing an explanation now), nor does it stage a counterexample to break a specific belief (misconception_probe — that is Misconception Confrontation Prompt).

The mechanism is generative, not merely diagnostic — a subtlety that is easy to miss. The point of asking a learner to explain is not primarily to grade the explanation; it is that the effort of producing it is itself the learning event. That is why a stall or a wrong-but-earnest account is a success condition, not a failure: it means the generation is doing real work rather than replaying a script.
