Some questions cannot be answered from a desk. Field Investigation is the mechanism that takes the learner to where the evidence actually lives — a site, a stratum, a shop floor, an informant — and equips them with protocols to gather it firsthand, then to weigh how much each piece can bear. Its defining trait is situated first-hand contact: the evidence is observed, measured, excavated, or elicited on location rather than read about. Its second, less glamorous defining trait is a built-in credibility filter — because raw field evidence is noisy, biased, and uneven, the mechanism is not complete until each finding is tagged with how reliable it is. Field Investigation gathers and grades; it hands the question and the synthesis to others.

Example

Second-year students at an archaeology field school spend three weeks excavating a Roman-era rubbish pit. The mechanism is the toolkit and the discipline they use on site. Each square metre is dug in measured layers; every find — a coin, a pot rim, a charred seed — is recorded with its depth, its position, and the layer it came from, using a standard context sheet. That is the evidence-gathering tool: a protocol that turns "we found some old stuff" into positioned, comparable data.

But the site supervisor spends as much time on the second discipline. A coin found loose in the topsoil is worth far less than one sealed under an undisturbed floor, because the topsoil has been churned by centuries of ploughing — its provenance is compromised. A student who wants to date the whole pit from that loose coin is stopped: the find is real, but its evidential weight is low. The team cross-checks the coin's implied date against the pottery styles and the stratigraphy, and only the findings that survive that triangulation are allowed to carry the argument. What leaves the trench is not a pile of objects but a graded body of evidence — and it is handed to the specialists who will synthesize it.

How it works

  • Go to the source and use a protocol. Observation schedules, measurement instruments, context sheets, or interview guides standardize what is captured so findings from different observers and days are comparable.
  • Record provenance with the datum. Every piece of evidence is logged with where, when, and under what conditions it was gathered — because in the field, context determines what a finding can mean.
  • Grade before you trust. Each finding is weighed for reliability: is the source representative, is the measurement clean, is the informant positioned to know? Compromised evidence is kept but demoted.
  • Triangulate. Independent lines of evidence are cross-checked against each other; a claim that only one noisy source supports is flagged as weak.

Tuning parameters

  • Instrumentation rigor — from casual notes to calibrated measurement and standardized protocols. More rigor buys comparability and defensibility but slows collection and can sterilize what you notice.
  • Credibility threshold — how strong a source must be before its finding is allowed to carry weight. A high bar protects against garbage-in but may discard genuine signal from imperfect sources.
  • Sampling breadth — how many sites, informants, or observations to cover. Broad sampling supports triangulation but dilutes depth at any one point.
  • Observer stance — unobtrusive observation versus active elicitation. Elicitation gets at motives and tacit knowledge but risks leading the witness and reactivity.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is authenticity: field evidence carries the texture, surprise, and disconfirming detail that no secondhand summary preserves, and the grading discipline is what stops that richness from becoming an undifferentiated pile. Cross-checking independent lines of evidence — triangulation — is the mechanism's core defense against being fooled by any single noisy source.[n1]

Its failure mode is treating collection as the finish line: a team returns with hundreds of observations, photos, and interview hours and mistakes the volume for a finding. Fact-gathering without the credibility filter is worse than useless — it lends the authority of "we were there" to evidence that a churned topsoil or a leading question has already corrupted. The classic misuse is the confirmation-loaded interview, where the field-worker hears the answer they came for because they asked for it. The guarding discipline is to grade provenance before trusting any finding, to triangulate anything load-bearing, and to remember that gathering is not synthesis — the meaning is made downstream.
