Problem-Based Learning Case¶
Case scenario — instantiates Inquiry-Guided Exploration
An ill-structured, realistic scenario that carries its question inside it — deliberately missing information — so learners must decide what to investigate and defend a recommendation from the evidence they assemble.
Problem-Based Learning Case is the mechanism that hands learners a situation instead of a question and makes them do the harder work of finding the question inside it. Its defining trait is deliberate ill-structure: the scenario is realistic, incomplete, and messy — key facts are missing on purpose — so before learners can investigate anything they must figure out what they need to know. The case's second defining move is the demand at the end: not a memorized answer but a recommendation the learner must defend, showing which evidence supports it and why. It anchors inquiry in a lifelike professional dilemma. It is the triggering scenario, not the toolkit and not the finished deliverable — those belong to its siblings.
Example¶
An MBA operations course opens not with a lecture on capacity planning but with an eight-page packet: Marisol's, a beloved three-location regional bakery, is deciding whether to open a fourth store in a new suburb. The packet is deliberately incomplete. It includes two years of messy sales figures, a landlord's lease offer, a glowing but unsourced local news clipping, the founder's gut conviction that "the demand is obviously there," and a suspiciously thin note about staffing. There is no stated question beyond "should they expand?" — and that is the point.
The learners' first hour is spent not answering but diagnosing the case: what is missing? They realize the news clipping is not evidence, the founder's conviction is a hypothesis, and the staffing gap may be the real constraint nobody costed. Only then do they investigate — building demand estimates from the sales data, stress-testing the lease math, questioning the labor assumptions. The deliverable is a defended recommendation: "Delay the fourth store (claim), because the two-year data shows the third store cannibalized the second rather than growing total demand (evidence), which means a fourth in a similar catchment likely repeats the pattern rather than adding net revenue (reasoning)." The case taught them to reason from ambiguous evidence to a defensible position — the way the job actually feels.
How it works¶
- Present a situation, withhold the question. The scenario is realistic and open; learners must extract the actual question rather than receive it.
- Build in missing information. Facts are deliberately absent so the first task is deciding what to find out — the diagnostic move that professionals must make under ambiguity.
- Include noise and false leads. Unsourced claims, gut convictions, and red herrings are seeded so learners must separate evidence from assertion.
- Demand a defended recommendation. Closure requires a position with its supporting evidence and reasoning made explicit, and its limits named — not a single "correct" answer.
Tuning parameters¶
- Ill-structuredness — how incomplete and ambiguous the case is. More ambiguity builds professional judgment but can overwhelm novices who lack the prerequisite concepts to know what is missing.
- Fidelity — how closely the case mirrors real professional messiness. High fidelity transfers better but takes longer to work and harder to grade.
- Red-herring density — how much noise and false lead is seeded. More noise trains discrimination but risks frustration and wasted effort if overdone.
- Answer openness — whether the case has a defensible best answer or genuinely several. Multiple defensible positions deepen argument but complicate assessment.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is authenticity of judgment: because the case withholds both the question and the tidy answer, it rehearses the exact skill professionals need — reasoning to a defensible position from ambiguous, incomplete evidence — which is why the format took root in professional education.[n1] The demand to defend a recommendation with explicit evidence and reasoning is what keeps it from becoming mere opinion-trading.
Its failure mode is the case with a secret single answer: an "ill-structured" scenario that actually has one instructor-intended solution, so learners revert to guessing what the professor wants and the ambiguity becomes a maze rather than a genuine dilemma. A second failure is the under-scaffolded case dropped on learners who lack the prerequisite concepts to even recognize what is missing — producing floundering, not judgment. The classic misuse is grading the recommendation's conclusion rather than the quality of its reasoning, which quietly rewards guessing the right answer over arguing well. The guarding discipline is to keep genuinely multiple positions defensible, to match the case's ambiguity to the learners' readiness, and to assess the evidence-and-reasoning chain rather than the verdict.
How it implements the components¶
Problem-Based Learning Case realizes the archetype's anchoring machinery — the lifelike dilemma that launches and shapes the inquiry:
inquiry_question— the question the archetype needs, but delivered embedded in an ill-structured situation the learner must first extract, rather than stated cleanly up front.claim_evidence_reasoning_structure— the required form of the defended recommendation: a position bolted to the evidence that supports it and the reasoning that connects them.
It does NOT implement evidence_gathering_tool or synthesis_artifact — the case supplies the dilemma and demands reasoning but provides no gathering tools (Field Investigation) and is not itself the produced deliverable, which is its twin Inquiry Project's (the two share the claim-evidence-reasoning backbone, but the project is the built output while the case is the launching scenario). And unlike Guided Research Question, which states one clean question, this mechanism leaves the question buried in the mess on purpose.
