Reflection Prompt¶
Prompt tool — instantiates Metacognitive Monitoring Loop
Short, open process questions fired at intervals — am I overloaded? am I actually making progress? — that surface reasoning signals without prescribing the fix.
Absorbed in a problem, a person stops noticing the state of their own thinking — that their working memory is saturated, that they've been circling the same ground for an hour. Reflection Prompt is the lightest possible interrupt against that blindness: a short, open, process-level question, delivered at an interval, that pulls attention up one level just long enough to read a signal. "How loaded do I feel right now?" "Am I actually getting anywhere, or repeating myself?" Its defining discipline is that it surfaces without prescribing. The prompt names no failure and supplies no fix; it only makes a signal — cognitive load, or progress — briefly visible, so the thinker can decide whether anything needs to change. It is a gauge you glance at, not a manual you follow.
Example¶
A data analyst is three hours into an exploratory dive through a messy customer dataset, chasing an anomaly in churn numbers. She has twelve notebook cells open, four half-finished hypotheses, and a rising sense of momentum. A reflection prompt — set to surface every forty minutes, taped to the corner of her screen — fires: "Right now: how full is your head, and are you closer than an hour ago?"
She stops and reads the two signals honestly. Head: overfull — she's holding four threads and dropping details. Progress: none — she's generated hypotheses but confirmed nothing; she's been feeling busy, not advancing. The prompt supplies no next step, and deliberately so. But having surfaced "overloaded and not converging," she does something about it herself — closes ten cells, writes the one hypothesis down, and picks a single test. The prompt didn't fix anything; it made the two signals she'd stopped feeling visible enough to act on. Its shallow ancestor is the study break that asks "is this working?" — the value is entirely in the honest read, which is why self-explanation research finds the gain comes from actually answering, not from the question's presence.[n1]
How it works¶
- Keep the question open and process-level. "How loaded am I? Am I progressing?" — not "did you consider X?", which smuggles in content and answers for the thinker.
- Fire at an interval, briefly. The prompt interrupts on a light cadence and demands only a few seconds; its whole cost budget is a glance, or it will be ignored or resented.
- Surface, don't solve. The output is a read on a signal, not an instruction. Any corrective move is the thinker's own, or another mechanism's — the prompt stays a gauge.
- Make the read honest. The only failure that matters is answering reflexively ("fine, fine"); the prompt is worthless unless the signal is read truthfully.
Tuning parameters¶
- Interval — frequent prompts catch drift early but fragment flow and breed reflex answers; sparse prompts protect concentration but let overload build unseen. Tune to task volatility.
- Which signals — load only, progress only, or both (and occasionally confusion or confidence). More signals per prompt read richer but lengthen the interrupt and dull compliance.
- Trigger style — timed (every N minutes), event-based (after each failed attempt), or self-initiated. Timed is reliable but blind to context; event-based fires when it matters but needs a detectable event.
- Delivery — a sticky note, a timer, an app nudge, a habit. Lighter delivery sustains the habit; heavier delivery is harder to ignore but easier to resent.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is the cost-to-value ratio: a two-second interrupt that catches saturation and stalling early, before either hardens into hours of wasted, overloaded work. It is the cheapest entry point to the whole loop, and the one most easily built into a solo routine.
Its central failure is performative answering — the prompt fires, the thinker mutters "fine" without looking, and the ritual persists while the monitoring dies. Fire it too often and it becomes interruption overhead, the self-observation itself the thing breaking flow; the archetype's over-monitoring trap lives here. And because the prompt only surfaces and never prescribes, a thinker who reads "overloaded, not converging" and then does nothing gains nothing — the signal without a follow-through is empty. The guarding discipline is to keep the prompt rare enough to stay honest, insist the signal is actually read rather than reflexively dismissed, and pair it with something that supplies the move once a problem is surfaced.
How it implements the components¶
cognitive_load_signal— its core function is to make working-memory saturation briefly visible ("how full is my head right now?"), a signal an absorbed mind stops registering.progress_marker— it surfaces whether the reasoning is actually advancing versus circling, distinguishing felt busyness from real movement.
It is a gauge, not a controller. It surfaces signals but does not supply the corrective move or the menu of failure-checks (strategy_adjustment, reasoning_failure_mode_label) — that acting artifact is [Strategy Checklist], its nearest twin; the prompt asks an open question that surfaces a signal, while the checklist offers a fixed list of faults and moves to select. Nor does it bank a lesson for the future (reflection_step), which is [Reasoning Retrospective].

The clean division of labor: the prompt notices (surfaces load or a stall), the checklist acts (offers the move once a problem is surfaced). A prompt with no follow-through is empty; a checklist run with nothing to trigger it is premature. Used together, one is the gauge and the other the toolbox.
