Learning Progression Feedback Loop¶
Instructional loop — instantiates Convergence Guidance
Advances a learner through scaffolded practice, formative feedback, and remediation until performance stabilizes and transfers to unfamiliar tasks.
A Learning Progression Feedback Loop moves a learner toward mastery of a skill by sequencing practice from supported to independent, reading formative feedback for where understanding is thin, and remediating before advancing — so competence settles rather than being crammed and lost. What makes it this mechanism is the deliberately shaped path: unlike a coaching loop that targets a behavior, this targets understanding, and convergence is defined by transfer — the learner performs on unfamiliar problems, after a delay, without scaffolding. A student who can only do the exact problems just practiced has not converged; the loop is built to tell the difference between fluency and familiarity.
Example¶
A student is learning to factor quadratics. The target is specific: factor an unfamiliar quadratic correctly and explain the step, not just match a worked example. The progression is scaffolded — start with a common-factor pulled out, then simple monic trinomials, then leading coefficients, with support (hints, worked steps, structured templates) that fades as the student succeeds. Short formative checks after each step are the feedback: not grades, but diagnostics that reveal where the reasoning breaks — say, sign errors when the constant is negative.
The correction is remediation targeted at that gap: a mini-set on sign handling before moving on, rather than more of what's already solid or a leap to what's too hard. The student appears to have it by Friday. But the loop doesn't close on Friday's quiz. The stability test is transfer: a mixed problem set two weeks later, including forms not drilled that day and a "explain why" item, taken without templates. If factoring holds up there — delayed, varied, unscaffolded — it has converged. If it collapses, Friday was familiarity, not mastery, and the loop reopens.
How it works¶
- Fix the target as understanding, not recall. The target names a skill the learner can apply and explain on new instances, with an acceptable mastery bar.
- Fade the scaffold along a path. Practice is sequenced from supported to independent, with hints and structure withdrawn as success grows, so difficulty rises deliberately rather than all at once.
- Read formative checks for the gap. Frequent low-stakes checks act as feedback that locates the specific misunderstanding, not just a pass/fail.
- Remediate, then test by transfer. Correction targets the diagnosed gap before advancing; convergence is certified only by delayed, varied, unscaffolded performance.
Tuning parameters¶
- Scaffold fade rate — how quickly support is withdrawn. Fast fade builds independence but risks failure and discouragement; slow fade is safe but breeds dependence on props.
- Feedback grain — how diagnostic each check is (score vs. error-typed). Finer grain targets remediation precisely but costs assessment design and time.
- Remediation depth — how much reteaching a detected gap triggers. Deep remediation solidifies but slows progress; shallow risks advancing on a cracked foundation.
- Difficulty sequencing — how steeply problem complexity climbs. Steep sequencing challenges and engages but overwhelms; gentle sequencing is comfortable but may not stretch.
- Transfer delay and breadth — how long after practice and how varied the stability test is. Longer, broader tests give a truer mastery read but postpone the "done" call.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is durable, portable competence: because it tests delayed transfer across varied problems, it distinguishes real mastery from same-day fluency, and its diagnostic feedback aims remediation at the actual gap instead of piling on undifferentiated practice.
Its signature failure is optimizing the immediate check instead of the skill — teaching to the test[1] — so the learner converges on the assessment's surface features and fails to transfer. The classic misuse is declaring mastery from one supervised, same-day success, mistaking familiarity for understanding; the skill evaporates by the exam. The guarding discipline is to define convergence as transfer, not the practiced form: vary problem surface, insert a delay, remove scaffolds, and treat a skill that only appears on drilled items as not yet converged.

It does not implement a false_convergence_check or a numeric convergence_metric; formal false-convergence screening is Model Fitting Loop's, and a quantified convergence trace is Convergence Dashboard's.
