- Trigger sensitivity — how close to the horizon the thresholds sit. Tighter (earlier) triggers waste some option value if the position recovers; looser ones risk firing too late to move well.
- Single decisive trigger vs. a basket — one clean line is legible but brittle; a basket of indicators is robust but easier to argue away threshold-by-threshold.
- Review cadence — annual, seasonal, or event-driven. Faster cadence catches sharp deterioration but costs standing attention and can breed alarm fatigue.
- Evidence-to-narrative firewall strength — how much a qualitative story is allowed to override a crossed threshold. Zero override is disciplined but blind to genuinely new information.
- Authority to fire — who is bound when a trigger trips (a two-key sign-off, a standing board, an automatic default). Higher bars protect against false alarms but reintroduce the delay the mechanism exists to prevent.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is converting an unbearable one-shot decision into a monitored condition that can be met without anyone having to be brave in the moment — the standing review is what keeps sunk-cost delay from quietly running the position past the point of orderly exit. It misleads when the triggers are treated as advisory. The classic failure is the goalpost move: the moment a threshold is crossed, the people who dread the retreat redefine it ("26 days doesn't really count, three of them were the same storm") — so a trigger that isn't bound to a response is just a number that gets renegotiated under exactly the pressure it was meant to pre-empt. The mirror-image misuse is setting triggers so conservatively they can never fire, manufacturing a paper process that authorizes indefinite holding.
