Micro / Meso / Macro Analysis¶
Method — instantiates Scale Reframing
Compares individual or unit-level evidence, intermediate organizational or network patterns, and broad system-level behavior to locate the level at which the decisive pattern appears.
Micro / Meso / Macro Analysis reads one question against a fixed three-rung ladder — micro (the individual or unit), meso (the intermediate group, network, or institution), macro (the whole system) — and asks at which rung the decisive variation actually concentrates. Its distinguishing move is the canonical triad: rather than searching an open-ended space of levels, it re-organizes the same evidence into three standardized bands and lays them side by side. The output is a rung, not a story — a diagnostic verdict about where the pattern lives, which a decision-side mechanism can then act on. It stops at locating; it does not itself commit a governing scale or convert the finding into action.
Example¶
A school district faces a stubborn math-achievement gap. Micro / Meso / Macro Analysis re-aggregates the same student records into three bands. At the micro rung — individual attendance, prior scores, effort — the gap correlates only weakly with any student attribute. At the meso rung — classrooms, teachers, and course tracks — it snaps into focus: nearly all the gap sits in which track a student is assigned to within a school. At the macro rung — district funding formula, statewide standards — the inputs are uniform across the affected schools, so the macro band hides the gap by averaging it away.
Laid side by side, the three rungs give a clean read: the decisive variation lives at the meso rung, in course assignment. The analysis returns exactly that and no more — the gap is a tracking pattern, not an individual-effort pattern and not a funding pattern. What to do about tracking is a separate, decision-side step; this method's job was to point at the right rung so that step doesn't aim at the wrong one.
How it works¶
- Fix one question. The same decision question is asked at every rung; the ladder is not a tour.
- Re-aggregate, don't re-collect. Where possible the identical evidence is regrouped into micro, meso, and macro bands, so differences across rungs are genuine level effects, not different datasets.
- Lay the reveals/hides ledger. For each rung, record what it shows and what it flattens; the macro band's habit of averaging variation away is itself informative.
- Name the rung, then stop. Return the rung where variation concentrates as the finding — without yet nominating a decision scale or a fix.
Tuning parameters¶
- Meso definition — what counts as the middle rung (team? network? institution?). Too coarse and the middle absorbs everything; too fine and it splinters into many mesos.
- Same-data vs. per-rung evidence — regrouping one dataset keeps rungs comparable; pulling different evidence at each rung is richer but risks comparing apples to oranges.
- Tie-breaking across rungs — how to report a pattern that genuinely spans two rungs rather than living cleanly on one.
- Ladder extension — whether to insert a fourth intermediate rung when the three standard bands leave a gap.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is discipline: a standardized ladder makes analyses comparable across problems and blocks the reflex to jump straight to the most fashionable rung. Its classic failure is the ecological fallacy — reading a correlation that holds at the macro (aggregate) rung[1] as though it were true of individuals at the micro rung. The matching misuse is declaring "it's systemic" because the macro band is where sophistication is presumed to live, when the variation actually sits at the meso rung. The guarding discipline is to require the variation to concentrate at the named rung — measurably, not rhetorically — and to keep the other two rungs' evidence on the page rather than discarding them once a winner is picked.

It does not detect a contradiction between a subgroup and the pooled aggregate (scale_mismatch_signal — that's Local / Global Analysis), nor choose the scale that should govern the decision and translate it into action (decision_scale_selection, translation_back_path — that's Organizational Level Analysis).

Notes¶
Its nearest twin is Organizational Level Analysis, the other level-comparing method. The one-sentence difference: this method locates which of three fixed rungs holds the pattern and stops there (it does not own decision_scale_selection), whereas Organizational Level Analysis walks the real org hierarchy to select the owning layer, translate the fix, and check the cross-layer feedback loop.
