Zoom-In / Zoom-Out Diagnosis is a repeatable movement discipline rather than a table of levels. From wherever you currently stand, you take one step in (narrower, finer) and one step out (wider, coarser), and after each move you run the same four-question checklist: what became newly visible? what is now hidden? what is being overemphasized? what is now actionable? There is no canonical ladder — the levels are relative to your starting frame, and each move is triggered by a felt sense that the current view isn't explaining things. Example

A pager fires: checkout latency has spiked. The on-call engineer starts at the alert (the current frame) and zooms in to a single slow request's stack trace, landing on one database query. Four questions: visible — the query is slow; hidden — whether it's slow for everyone; overemphasized — this one request; actionable — maybe add an index. That "hidden" answer nags, so she zooms out to the service dashboard: the query is only slow when a cache node is cold, which is rare. The nag persists, so she zooms out once more to the deploy timeline — a config change this morning removed cache warming on rollout.

Each move re-ran the checklist; each "what is now hidden" answer refused to let her stop at the first fix. The actionable frame turned out to be the deploy/config level — restore cache warming — not the query she first landed on. Indexing the query would have treated a symptom the wider frame revealed as incidental.

How it works

  • Start where the symptom is. The current frame is the anchor; movement is measured relative to it, not against a fixed scale set.
  • Alternate one step in, one step out. Each move is a single, deliberate change of grain, not a leap to "the system level."
  • Run the four questions at every stop. Visible / hidden / overemphasized / actionable — the "hidden" question is the one that earns the next move.
  • Stop when movement stops changing the answers. When another zoom no longer shifts the four answers, you have found the frame; commit and hand off.

Tuning parameters

  • Step size — how far each zoom jumps. Small steps are safe but slow; large jumps risk skipping the level that mattered.
