Multimodal Input Board¶
Artifact — instantiates Participation Equity and Inclusion Design

The Multimodal Input Board is a shared artifact — physical, digital, or hybrid — that stands up several parallel contribution channels at once, so a single contribution can arrive through whichever channel fits the person: a sticky note, a typed form entry, a drawing, a dot-vote, an anonymous card, a signal held up, or an idea spoken to a scribe. Its defining idea is simultaneity and equal standing: many channels open at the same time, and a contribution made in any of them counts as fully as one made aloud. It is not a turn-taking protocol that sequences who speaks, and it is not a pre-event audit of the room; it is the surface on which non-speech becomes real participation, all feeding one shared focus.
Example¶
A seventh-grade science teacher wants every student to hypothesize why the classroom plant died — and knows that "hands up" will surface the same four confident kids. So she sets up an input board along the whiteboard: a sticky-note column, an anonymous "wonder box," a shared tablet form, a "draw your idea" corner, and a standing offer to scribe for a student whose motor disability makes writing slow. In eight minutes the board holds twenty-eight ideas instead of four voices: a usually silent student's sticky note, an English-learner's labeled sketch, three anonymous guesses that turned out to be the sharpest. She then clusters the notes on the board and runs the whole-class discussion off the artifact itself — so the alternative channels don't fragment into side conversations but converge into the shared thread.
How it works¶
The board opens multiple channels concurrently rather than in sequence, which is what lets a room contribute in parallel instead of waiting for the floor. Each channel includes a low-exposure option (anonymous cards, a private form) so that fear of visibility isn't a barrier, and assisted or scribed input is a first-class path, not a special case. The move that keeps it honest is convergence: every channel feeds one visible shared surface, and the facilitator synthesizes from that surface, so the archetype's fragmented multichannel failure — alternative channels that exist but never rejoin the collective focus — is designed out. A drawing pinned to the board carries the same weight in that synthesis as a comment made aloud.
Tuning parameters¶
- Channel count and variety — how many modes, and how different. More channels reach more people but raise the cost of merging them back and can overwhelm; too few recreates the single-channel bottleneck.
- Anonymity per channel — which channels allow unsigned contributions. Anonymity unlocks risky or minority ideas but weakens accountability and can be gamed.
- Synchronous vs. asynchronous — whether input is gathered live or left open over time. Async catches reflective and absent contributors; sync keeps the shared energy in the room.
- Convergence method — clustering, dot-voting, thematic synthesis, or a scribe's read-back. This dial decides whether the channels actually reunite into one focus or scatter.
- Assisted-input provisioning — whether scribing, translation, and assistive tools are staffed and ready. Under-provisioning turns "assisted input available" into a promise no one can use.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is unlocking the contributors a speech-only format silences — the shy, the second-language speaker, the person who thinks in pictures — and it embodies the Universal Design for Learning principle of offering multiple means of engagement and expression rather than one mandatory mode.[n1]
Its failure mode is fragmentation: channels that bloom but never feed back into the shared focus, leaving a scatter of inputs and no collective meaning. Channel overload can confuse more than it includes, and an all-digital board reintroduces the very divide it meant to close. The classic misuse is decorative multimodality — sticky notes gathered for show while the "real" decision still happens in the dominant verbal channel among the same few people. The guarding discipline is that every channel must visibly converge on the shared surface and demonstrably count in what the group decides.
How it implements the components¶

It does not audit the venue's physical and sensory conditions in advance — that pre-event verification is participation_boundary_and_barrier_map work done by Accessibility and Sensory Checklist; and it does not sequence spoken turns (equal_voice_turn_structure, Structured Round Robin). The board multiplies channels; it neither checks the room nor orders the talking.
