Multiple-Anchor Comparison¶
Method — instantiates Anchoring Reset
A method for comparing several plausible references so the first anchor does not dominate.
The pull of an anchor comes partly from being alone — a single number has nothing to compete with, so adjustment happens relative to it by default. Multiple-Anchor Comparison dissolves that monopoly by putting several genuinely plausible references on the table at once and reasoning across all of them, so the first or loudest number becomes merely one candidate among peers. Its defining move is varying the references, not the estimators or the timing: it does not seal people off or import an outsider, it deliberately surrounds the suspect anchor with rivals and weighs them against evidence. When the references cluster, that convergence is reassurance; when they scatter, that spread is an honest uncertainty band. The method's whole leverage is that no single starting point can dominate a field of them.
Example¶
An appraiser is valuing a suburban house, and the seller's list price of $625,000 is sitting there wanting to become the reference for everything that follows. Rather than adjust off it, the appraiser assembles a field of references at once: three recent comparable sales on the same street ($580K, $610K, $640K), the prior appraisal from the last refinance, the tax-assessed value, and a cost-to-rebuild-minus-depreciation figure. Each is placed side by side, and each is tested and adjusted against the specifics — the subject house has a renovated kitchen the $580K comp lacked, a smaller lot than the $640K one. The list price is now just one entry in a crowded table, and a strategically hopeful one. What emerges is not an adjustment off $625K but a supported range of roughly $595K–$620K, with the width reflecting how much the references genuinely disagree once the evidence is applied.
How it works¶
- Assemble a field of plausible references. Gather at least three, drawn from different sources — comparables, historical distributions, market ranges, counterfactual baselines — not just the ones that flatter a hunch.
- Include challenging references, not only supports. A field of convenient anchors is cherry-picking with extra steps.
- Test each against evidence. Adjust every reference for the ways the current case differs, so they are comparable rather than merely adjacent.
- Read the field. Convergence across independent references is a strong signal; a wide scatter is the uncertainty band the decision should carry forward.
Tuning parameters¶
- Reference count — more references dilute any single anchor further, but each one costs effort to source and adjust.
- Diversity requirement — how hard you force references to come from genuinely different origins; higher diversity fights cherry-picking but is harder to assemble.
- Evidence-adjustment depth — how thoroughly each reference is corrected for case-specific differences before comparison.
- Weighting scheme — equal weight versus credibility-weighted; weighting sharpens the estimate but reintroduces a place for bias to hide.
- Output form — a single reconciled figure or a range; ranges are safer when the field disagrees.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it attacks anchoring structurally rather than psychologically: instead of asking people to resist a number, it denies the number its monopoly.[1] It is especially good when no single reference is obviously authoritative and the honest answer is a range.
Its signature failure mode is cherry-picking — quietly assembling the field of alternatives that all point where you already wanted to go, which reproduces the original bias behind a veneer of thoroughness. The tidy convergence of a rigged field is more persuasive, and more dangerous, than a lone anchor. The discipline is to commit the reference set — including deliberately challenging references — before seeing which ones support the preferred answer, and to report the true scatter rather than the flattering subset. A field that has been curated to agree is not a comparison; it is a decoration.
How it implements the components¶
Multiple-Anchor Comparison fills the several-references-and-spread components:
alternative_reference_set— assembling the field of plausible references is its core act.calibration_evidence— it tests and adjusts each reference against the case's facts so they are genuinely comparable.uncertainty_band— the residual scatter across the adjusted references becomes the range carried forward.
It varies the references, not the estimators, so it does not capture sealed independent_estimates — that is Blind Independent Estimates — nor import an outside_reference_provider (that is Outsider Estimate Check), nor chase the downstream_anchor_trace of an inherited baseline (that is Baseline Recalibration).
