Narrative Identification Storyboard¶
Template — instantiates Identity-Resonant Persuasion Design
Structures stories so the audience can inhabit a perspective or role while keeping claims accurate and agency-preserving.
The Narrative Identification Storyboard is a fill-in structure for building the appeal as a story the audience can step inside. Its defining move is to let identification happen through role-taking rather than assertion: instead of telling the audience "this is compatible with who you are," it stages a character the audience recognizes as themselves — same role, same values, same constraints — moving through the proposal and coming out the other side. The template's distinctive burden is that it holds two things at once that stories usually let slip: the claims stay factually accurate, and the protagonist keeps their agency (they choose, they aren't swept along), so the audience is invited into a role, not railroaded through one. It builds the bridge in narrative form; it does not test how audiences receive it, and it does not select who tells it.
Example¶
A regional utility wants suburban homeowners to consider a heat pump when their aging furnace dies. Spec-sheet messaging about efficiency ratings has gone nowhere. The storyboard builds the appeal instead around a recognizable protagonist: a practical homeowner — not an early-adopter, not an environmentalist — whose furnace fails in February. The frames follow her decision: the panic, the contractor who lays out both options honestly, the math on her actual bills, the winter after. The self-concept anchor is "the sensible one who future-proofs the house," a role this audience already claims.
The template's accuracy slots do real work: the storyboard reserves a frame for the honest tradeoff — the higher upfront cost, the cases where a heat pump is a worse fit — because a story that hides the downside converts to resentment when reality diverges. And the agency slot keeps the protagonist deciding rather than being converted: she weighs it and chooses, modeling evaluation rather than conversion. The audience can inhabit her because she is like them and because she is reasoning, not being sold.
How it works¶
What distinguishes it from ordinary storytelling is the paired constraint — inhabitable role plus intact evidence — baked into the template's slots:
- Cast the protagonist from the anchor. The central character embodies the audience's own self-concept anchor and role, so identification is by recognition, not instruction.
- Stage the bridge as plot. The proposal appears as something the protagonist does because of who they are — the shared-substance continuity rendered as action rather than claimed as a slogan.
- Reserve accuracy slots. Dedicated frames carry the honest tradeoff, the uncertainty, and the case where the proposal doesn't fit, so the evidence backbone rides inside the story.
- Keep the agency frame. The protagonist deliberates and chooses; the template forbids the swept-along arc that models compliance instead of decision.
Tuning parameters¶
- Transportation depth — how immersive and emotionally vivid the story is. Deeper immersion drives identification but suppresses scrutiny; the accuracy and agency slots are the counterweight that keeps depth honest.
- Protagonist proximity — how closely the character matches the audience vs. an aspirational "who I could become." Close matches maximize recognition; aspirational ones invite growth but risk feeling unattainable.
- Tradeoff prominence — how much narrative weight the honest downside gets. More prominence protects accuracy at some cost to persuasive smoothness.
- Agency explicitness — how visibly the protagonist chooses. High explicitness preserves autonomy modeling; low explicitness reads as being converted.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is narrative transportation[n1]: a well-built story lets the audience rehearse being the kind of person who adopts the proposal, which reaches uptake that argument alone cannot — while the template's accuracy and agency slots keep that power from running unsupervised.
Its failure mode is the dark side of the same effect: transportation reduces counter-arguing, so a story can carry an audience past scrutiny they should have applied, and a storyboard that quietly drops its accuracy slots becomes emotional bypass with a plot. The classic misuse is the tearjerker that models conversion rather than choice — the protagonist swept to the "right" decision — which erodes the very agency the archetype requires. The guarding discipline is to keep the tradeoff and agency frames mandatory (the story must show the protagonist deciding, downside included) and to route the finished storyboard to a reception probe rather than trusting its emotional pull.
How it implements the components¶
The storyboard fills the message-construction components in narrative form:
shared_substance_bridge— renders the continuity between identity and proposal as plot: the protagonist adopts the proposal because of who they already are.self_concept_anchor— casts the audience's validated self-commitment as the protagonist's defining trait, making identification a matter of recognition.argument_and_evidence_backbone— reserves narrative slots for the honest tradeoff, uncertainty, and non-fit cases, so reasons survive inside the story rather than being displaced by it.
It does not measure whether audiences actually identify or recoil (counteridentification_monitor, resonance_transfer_test) — that is the Counteridentification Probe — and it does not check whether recipients can perceive and refuse the appeal (autonomy_and_consent_boundary), which is the Consent and Autonomy Review; the storyboard only models agency inside the fiction.

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Interface, Display & Cue
Rationale: The mechanism is an author-facing storyboard surface whose dedicated frames elicit identification, action, trade-off, uncertainty, and agency safeguards.
Nearest alternative: Representation, Specification & Plan — It specifies narrative structure, but its operative form is the fillable visual surface through which authors construct and inspect the story.
Review outcome: Adjudicated after independent review; high confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Communication & Media Studies
Origin pattern: Cross-disciplinary synthesis
Present-day reach: Multi-domain
Rationale: Narrative transportation and identification as persuasion are directly communication phenomena; film storyboarding, psychology, and literary characterization shape the generalized template artifact. This establishes communication_media_studies as the primary origin lineage rather than merely a domain where the mechanism is now applied.
Related originating lineages:
- Film & Media Production — Storyboarding audience entry into a role or perspective originates most directly in screen narrative and production design.
- Literature & Literary Theory — Focalization and point-of-view theory supply narrative structure.
- Psychology — Narrative-transportation research materially explains absorption, attitude change, and reduced counterargument.
Review resolution: Authoritative/primary-source research resolves the conflicting primary-origin claims in favor of communication_media_studies: Narrative transportation and identification as persuasion are directly communication phenomena; film storyboarding, psychology, and literary characterization shape the generalized template artifact. Retained alternate origins (film_media_production, psychology, literature_literary_theory) are limited to independently formative or materially shaping lineages supported by the reviewer evidence; downstream adoption alone was not promoted to origin. The breadth of present-day use is recorded separately as domain_reach=multi_domain. origin_mode=cross_disciplinary_synthesis, confidence=medium, and encyclopedia_synthesis=true reflect the surviving provenance evidence and the encyclopedia's generalization.
Attribution caveat: The exact ethical persuasion template is an encyclopedia synthesis. The template combines communication theory, psychological evidence, and production storyboarding.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Researched adjudication after independent review; medium confidence.

Notes¶
[n1] Narrative transportation (Melanie Green & Timothy Brock) is the experience of being absorbed into a story such that attention, imagery, and feeling are drawn into its world; transported readers counter-argue less and shift attitudes more. That reduced scrutiny is precisely why the template forces accuracy and agency slots — transportation is a persuasive amplifier that must not be allowed to bypass reasoning. ↩
