Narrative Representation¶
Document — instantiates Representation Fit Selection
Represents sequence, causality, motivation, tradeoff, lived experience, or scenario context through story-like structure.
Narrative Representation encodes a situation as a story — an ordered account of who did what, why, and with what consequence — because story structure natively preserves the things tables and charts flatten: temporal unfolding, motive, causal chain, and the felt texture of lived experience. Its defining move is to choose narrative specifically when the task turns on sequence-plus-meaning — when the decision depends on understanding how events led to each other and what they meant to the people inside them — and to do so with eyes open to narrative's signature distortion: the vivid instance that hijacks proportion. It is a document you read for comprehension and empathy, not a form you compute over or operate.
Example¶
A hospital is redesigning discharge from its cardiac unit, and the analytics team arrives with clean tables: average length of stay, readmission rates, a bar chart of medication-adherence percentages. The numbers show a readmission problem but say nothing about why patients bounce back. Narrative Representation supplies the missing structure. The service-design team writes up a single patient's discharge journey as a worked account: sent home Friday afternoon with seven new prescriptions and a follow-up appointment three weeks out, no ride to the pharmacy, a confusing instruction sheet, a missed dose by Sunday, and a return to the ER by Wednesday. That story preserves exactly what the table destroyed — the causal sequence by which a reasonable discharge process produces a readmission, and the motivation and confusion at each step. It makes the failure legible and actionable in a way no adherence percentage could. The team is disciplined about the distortion, too: they flag that one vivid story is not a rate, tie it to the aggregate numbers so it illustrates rather than replaces them, and write it for a mixed audience of clinicians and administrators who read "patient story" through different conventions.
How it works¶
The method commits to story structure precisely when the preserved feature is temporal-causal-experiential: it orders events as an unfolding chain, keeps motive and consequence attached to each step, and renders the lived context that aggregate forms strip away. Because narrative's power is also its hazard, the method pairs the story with an explicit distortion check — is this case representative or cherry-picked, and is its vividness carrying more weight than its frequency warrants? — and anchors it to the audience: who reads this, and through what interpretive convention (a clinician reads a patient story diagnostically; a board reads it as anecdote), so the story lands as evidence of structure rather than as an emotional lever.
Tuning parameters¶
- Representativeness discipline — how hard the chosen case is checked against the aggregate; tighter discipline curbs the vivid-outlier trap but costs the drama that makes a story stick.
- Detail richness — how much lived texture the account carries; richer preserves more experiential structure but lengthens the read and can bury the causal spine.
- Aggregate anchoring — how tightly the narrative is tied to supporting numbers; strong anchoring guards against anecdote-as-proof but dilutes the story's directness.
- Audience framing — how explicitly the interpretive convention is set for the reader; clearer framing prevents misreading but constrains the story's reach across audiences.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Narrative Representation helps when a decision hinges on why and how, not just how much — when sequence, motive, and lived consequence are the task-relevant structure and a table would flatten them into a rate that hides the mechanism of failure.
Its failure mode is that a single vivid story overpowers the base rate: a compelling anecdote feels like proof and shifts a decision more than a thousand quieter cases should.[1] The classic misuse is the hand-picked patient story wheeled out to win an argument the aggregate data does not support. The guarding discipline is the representativeness check and aggregate anchoring — the narrative earns its place as an illustration of structure the numbers corroborate, never as a substitute for the numbers themselves.
How it implements the components¶
preserved_feature— it is chosen precisely to preserve temporal-causal-experiential structure (sequence, motive, consequence) that other forms flatten.distortion_check— it explicitly tests whether the chosen case is representative or a vividness-inflated outlier.interpretation_context— it fits the account to who reads it and the convention through which they will read a "story" as evidence rather than anecdote.
It conveys experience by an account you read and does not build an operable artifact or test it with users — validation_case (and the affordance-level fit it checks) belongs to Prototype Representation; nor does it run a head-to-head comparison_view, which is Graph–Table Comparison's job.

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Representation, Specification & Plan
Rationale: The mechanism externalizes temporal sequence, causality, motivation, and lived context in a structured story document with an explicit distortion check.
Nearest alternative: Communication, Facilitation & Learning — A reader may gain understanding, but the concrete practitioner-deployed form is the informational representation that preserves those relationships.
Review outcome: Adjudicated after independent review; high confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Literature & Literary Theory
Origin pattern: Cross-disciplinary synthesis
Present-day reach: Universal
Rationale: Narrative theory formalized story as a representation of sequence, causality, motivation, and lived consequence rather than a mere list of facts.
Related originating lineages:
- Ethnography & Qualitative Methods — Qualitative inquiry independently uses narrative cases to preserve temporal and situated meaning that tabulation removes.
- History & Historiography — Historiography materially developed narrative representation for evidence-bound accounts of past events.
Review resolution: Both independent reviews agree on primary origin literature_literary_theory; reconciliation resolves reported_ambiguity, alternate_origin_disagreement, origin_mode_disagreement, encyclopedia_synthesis_disagreement. Formative alternate lineages retained: ethnography_qualitative_methods, history_historiography. The broader reach of later applications is kept separate as domain_reach=universal; origin_mode=cross_disciplinary_synthesis describes the historical relationship among lineages. Confidence is conservatively reconciled to medium, and encyclopedia_synthesis=true preserves the reviewers' boundary judgment.
Attribution caveat: Story-based representation predates modern disciplines, so the primary marks the nearest formalizing tradition rather than an absolute invention point.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Reconciled after independent review; medium confidence.
