Eligibility review — instantiates Survival-Conditioned Persistence Forecasting
Decides whether a subject is even the kind of thing whose past survival predicts future survival, routing aging or wearing entities to an ordinary decline model instead.
Every other mechanism in this archetype assumes it is allowed to reason "survived longer, therefore likely to last longer" — and that assumption is false for most things in the world. Non-Aging Eligibility Review is the gate that decides whether it holds here, before any effort is spent forecasting. It asks one decisive question — does the passage of time itself raise the exit hazard? — and admits only subjects for which the answer is no. Biological organisms, fatiguing structures, depleting resources, shelf-lived chemicals, and fixed-term contracts all fail: for them, age is a countdown, not a credential, and survival-conditioned reasoning would invert the truth. Its defining move is to pin down what the subject even is and then apply the aging test to it, so the whole pipeline is gated on a mechanism, not a slogan.
Example¶
A planner is tempted to reason that a person who has already reached ninety has, by the survive-longer-last-longer logic, many years still ahead. The review stops that cold. First it fixes the subject and its continuity: the subject is a single human organism, there is no relaunch or reset, and calendar age is biological age — the clock is real and unbroken. Then it applies the gate: does time itself raise this subject's exit hazard? For humans, emphatically yes — mortality hazard climbs steeply with age as the body senesces. This is an aging process, the exact opposite of the non-aging precondition, so elapsed survival is not reassurance; at ninety, each further year is less likely, not more.
The verdict is FAIL, and — this is the point — the review does not just say no, it routes: send this to an ordinary actuarial life table with an increasing hazard, the correct tool for a senescent subject, not to Lindy-style reasoning. The contrast makes the gate's value plain. Had the subject instead been a practice or a file format — things that do not senesce — the same test could pass, and the survival-conditioned pipeline downstream would be licensed to run.
How it works¶
The review is a yes/no gate, and what distinguishes it is that it decides on mechanism, not on the look of a curve:
- Fix the subject and its clock — name the entity and the continuity rule (does a rewrite, relaunch, or redesign reset the clock?), because "does it age?" is undefined until you say what it is and when its life began.
- Hunt for an aging mechanism — senescence, material fatigue, depletion, a shelf life, a fixed contractual end; any one of these is reason enough to fail the subject regardless of a flat-looking short-run hazard.
- Weigh it against the shape evidence — the empirical hazard reading is admitted as evidence, but a clear physical aging mechanism overrides a curve that merely looks flat over a short window.
- Pass or route — eligible subjects proceed; failures are routed to reliability, decay/half-life, or fixed-term analysis so they still get an appropriate forecast.
It issues a verdict, not an estimate — it decides whether the question is even askable this way.
Tuning parameters¶
- Gate strictness — how strong an aging mechanism must be to fail a subject. Strict gates avoid false Lindy but can exclude maintained lineages that genuinely renew.
- Continuity rule — what changes preserve identity versus reset the clock. Loose rules inflate apparent age; tight rules fragment the record into short, uninformative lives.
- Maintained-lineage handling — whether renewal, repair, and replacement count as part of survival (so a maintained thing can pass) or define a new subject.
- Mechanism-vs-data weighting — how far a known physical aging mechanism overrides a flat empirical hazard, and vice versa.
- Routing map — where failures go (reliability, half-life/decay, contract-term analysis), so a FAIL still yields the right kind of forecast rather than a dead end.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it blocks the archetype's most serious technical failure — applying survive-longer-lasts-longer to an aging system — at the gate, before any seductive curve has been fit. It forces the decisive question to be answered out loud rather than assumed, and it turns a wrong "no" into a routing toward the right tool instead of a shrug.
Its failure mode is that the gate is a judgment and can be gamed: a maintained lineage relabeled "non-aging" to license the reasoning, or a slow aging mechanism waved off because the short-run curve happens to look flat. Human mortality is the clean anti-example — the Gompertz pattern of roughly exponentially rising hazard with age[1] is exactly what the gate exists to catch, and no amount of past survival converts it into durability. Eligibility is also not permanent: a formerly non-aging entity can begin aging when maintenance collapses or a resource depletes. The discipline is to require a named, plausible reason for non-aging — not merely an absence of visible aging — to re-run the gate whenever the subject or its upkeep changes, and to admit "maintained lineage" only when the renewal is real and represented in the record.
