Novelty Cadence Rotation¶
Governance policy — instantiates Novelty-Driven Attention Capture
Spreads and varies novelty cues across repeated exposures on a budget, retiring and rotating each one before an audience habituates and it decays into background.
Novelty Cadence Rotation is not a novelty cue at all — it is the policy that governs a whole program of them over time. It never produces a single interruption; instead it decides how often novelty may be spent, cycles through a pool of distinct cues so no one device repeats until it has had time to feel fresh again, watches for the decay that repetition causes, and forces quiet stretches so the background can reassert itself. Its defining idea is temporal and portfolio-level: the enemy is not a weak cue but a habituated one, and the only defense is scarcity managed across many exposures. Where the other mechanisms in this archetype each answer "what break do I make right now?", this one answers "how do I keep breaks working over a year?"
Example¶
A software product ships a release every month, and every release has one headline feature the team wants users to notice inside the app. In the first quarter they used the same device each time: a pulsing "New!" badge on the changed menu item. It worked in January, half-worked in February, and by March users' eyes slid past it — the badge had become part of the furniture.
The rotation policy fixes this without making anything louder. It sets a budget of one "loud" in-app cue per release, so a month never carries three competing novelties. It rotates the device: a badge this month, a one-screen spotlight tour next, a changed empty-state the month after, an emailed teaser after that — no device reused within a quarter. A saturation monitor tracks whether users still open and act on each cue over successive releases, not just whether they clicked it once; when engagement on a device starts sliding, that device is retired early. And it enforces quiet releases where the app introduces its change through ordinary copy alone, letting the baseline settle so the next loud cue has a calm field to break. Across the year, the program's novelty stays solvent because no single device is spent to exhaustion.
How it works¶
- Set the novelty budget. Fix how many attention-capturing cues may run per period, keeping novelty scarce by construction rather than by hope.
- Rotate across a pool. Maintain several distinct cue devices and cycle them so none repeats inside a defined window; variety resets the wear each device accumulates.
- Monitor for saturation. Track sustained noticing and action across exposures, not just first-touch response, and flag any device whose effect is decaying.
- Enforce quiet periods. Schedule stretches with no loud cue at all, so the stable background reasserts itself and the next cue lands against real calm.
Tuning parameters¶
- Budget size — how many novel cues are allowed per period. Generous budgets keep more messages salient short-term but accelerate saturation across the whole program.
- Rotation window — the minimum gap before a device may be reused. Longer windows keep each device fresher but demand a bigger pool to fill the schedule.
- Pool diversity — how many genuinely different devices are in rotation. More variety resists habituation but risks a program that never builds a recognizable identity.
- Saturation trigger — how much measured decay forces a device into early retirement. Sensitive triggers protect freshness but retire devices that might still have life; lax ones let cues rot in place.
- Quiet-period length — how long the background runs cue-free. Longer restores more contrast but risks the audience tuning out the channel entirely.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it keeps a long-running program's novelty from going bankrupt: it directly counters wear-out, the well-documented decay of an attention cue's effect under repetition, by rationing and rotating rather than escalating.[n1] It is the right tool wherever the same audience meets the same channel over and over — newsletters, release notes, recurring campaigns, notification streams.
Its failure mode is rotation for its own sake. Churning devices purely to be different — novelty churn — can fragment a program's recognizable voice and train an audience to expect chaos, and a budget set too generously will still saturate no matter how much you rotate. The classic misuse is the mandate to "make everything feel new every cycle," which spends the budget on cues no target deserved. The guarding discipline is to tie each spend to a target genuinely worth noticing and to let the saturation monitor — real engagement decay, not gut feel — drive retirement.

It does not implement controlled_pattern_violation, expectation_baseline_model, or novelty_intensity_threshold — producing a single momentary interruption and calibrating its strength is Rhythm Break or Pause, its nearest twin; this policy allocates, rotates, and retires interruptions over time and creates none of them itself.

This mechanism sits above the single-cue mechanisms rather than beside them: the contrastive interrupts, incongruity hooks, and rhythm breaks are the devices in its pool, and its whole job is scheduling and rationing them over time. A program can run any of those with no rotation policy — it will simply watch each one wear out — which is exactly the gap this mechanism fills.
