Practice Genealogy

A historical method — instantiates Social Reality Construction Audit

Traces how a category or routine actually came to be — its contingent origins, the forgotten alternatives, and the moment it hardened into "the way things are" — so present necessity isn't mistaken for timeless fact.

Practice Genealogy is the only sibling that works backward in time. It reconstructs the history of a specific category or routine, showing that it was introduced at a datable moment, for particular reasons, over rejected alternatives, and only later came to feel inevitable. Its point is de-naturalization through origins: once you can see that the "obvious" arrangement was a contingent choice — with roads not taken — it becomes something you can reconsider rather than something you must accept.

Example

A school district treats the A–F letter grade as the natural way to report learning. A Practice Genealogy traces its descent: ranked letter grades are barely a century old, spreading through American schools around the early twentieth century alongside mass schooling and the administrative need to sort large cohorts efficiently. They displaced narrative evaluations and older adjectival schemes partly for clerical convenience, not because they were shown to measure learning better. Seeing that the scale was a contingent administrative solution — with alternatives like mastery marks and narrative reports that lost out — makes it revisable rather than given. This is genealogy in Foucault's sense: a history of the present that shows what feels necessary was in fact made.[1]

How it works

The distinguishing discipline is to reconstruct descent, not to justify the present:

  • Fix the practice and find its earliest forms — where and when it first appears.
  • Trace the changes and adoptions — and the pressures that drove each.
  • Recover the alternatives that lost — the roads not taken, and why.
  • Locate the point of naturalization — the moment it stopped being seen as a choice.

It explains how the present arose; it does not map today's institutions or decide the future.

Tuning parameters

  • Depth of descent — recent origins versus deep history. Deeper often reveals more contingency but risks losing present-day relevance.
  • Contingency emphasis — narrate a smooth progress story versus foreground the forks and rejected alternatives. Foregrounding the forks is what de-naturalizes.
  • Sources — the official record versus marginal and dissenting accounts of how the practice took hold.
  • Naturalization focus — how much effort to spend pinpointing the moment a "choice" became a "fact."

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is being the fastest cure for "it has always been this way," and it recovers alternatives that current participants cannot even imagine because the present frame erased them. Its characteristic trap is the genetic fallacy — treating contingent origins as proof the practice is wrong now, when origin does not settle current value. The mirror-image failure is a whiggish story that makes the present look inevitable after all. The discipline that guards against both is to keep "was contingent" strictly separate from "is therefore bad" — the audit's material and legitimacy checks are what decide present worth.

How it implements the components

Practice Genealogy realizes the time dimension of the archetype — where the construction came from, not what now holds it up:

  • historical_genealogy — its core deliverable: the contingent descent of the practice and the point it hardened into fact.
  • constructed_category_or_practice — the genealogy is always of a specific named category or routine; it fixes and de-naturalizes that object.

It does not map the present-day institutions that now hold the practice in place (institutional_reinforcement_map → Institutional Analysis) or decide whether to keep it (revision_or_preservation_decision → Revision Decision Memo).

Notes

It complements Category Audit: the audit inspects the category's present mechanics, the genealogy supplies the missing time axis. Keep the genetic-fallacy caution in view — that a practice began as a contingent choice does not by itself argue for changing it.
