How it works

Tuning parameters

  • Literalness — how closely the picture resembles its referent. Concrete pictures test better with novices; abstract ones scale across contexts but must be learned.
  • Set size — how many services get a sign. A lean set stays memorable and uncluttered; a large set names more but dilutes recognition and crowds surfaces.
  • Cultural specificity — a globally neutral figure versus a locally vivid one. Neutral marks travel but feel generic; local marks resonate but may exclude outsiders.
  • Test breadth — how wide the comprehension sample is. Broader samples catch more exclusions but cost time and can stall a rollout on edge cases.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is reach: it lets a service be found by someone who shares no language with the people who built the sign, and its comprehension testing catches false-universality before it strands anyone. It is the archetype's answer to the multilingual crowd.

Its failure mode is assumed universality — shipping a picture that is transparent to its designer and opaque or offensive to part of the public, discovered only in the field.
