They assign a color family per building wing and a small icon vocabulary for major destinations (imaging, surgery, pharmacy, exit). At each junction, a sign shows only the destinations reachable from there, with an arrow, so a visitor is never asked to hold the whole campus in mind — just the next turn. The design leans hard on disambiguation by placement: two similar corridors are kept distinct by consistent color and by never showing a destination's arrow where it would point down the wrong hall. The environment itself, read in sequence, does the guiding — a visitor who cannot read the local language still follows the color and the arrows to the right door, drawing on the campus's legibility as a set of paths, nodes, and landmarks.[1]
How it works¶
The distinctive machinery is sequencing meaning through space rather than stating it in a key:
- Map decision points, not walls. The system locates every junction where a choice is made and guarantees a sign there; corridors between choices stay quiet.
- Deliver only local relevance. Each sign shows the destinations reachable from its position, so the reader decides the next step, not the whole route, at once.
- Encode with families. Color families, consistent arrow conventions, and a small destination-icon set let a traveler track a wing or route without re-reading.
- Disambiguate by placement. Similar corridors and confusable destinations are separated by where signs hang and which arrows appear where, so the environment never points two ways at once.
Tuning parameters¶
- Decision-point density — how often signs appear. Denser signage reassures and prevents wrong turns but clutters the environment and dilutes attention.
- Information per sign — how many destinations a junction sign lists. Fewer entries scan faster; more entries serve more travelers but slow every one of them.
- Progressive disclosure depth — how much the system reveals the whole route versus the next step only. Next-step-only reduces load; fuller disclosure aids planners but overwhelms in motion.
- Redundancy of encoding — arrows plus color plus text plus landmarks. More cues serve more travelers but risk visual overload at a busy junction.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is navigation under motion and time pressure: it lets a stranger cross a complex environment by making only easy, local choices, and its spatial encoding works across languages and reading abilities. It is the archetype distributed through a building or campus.
Its failure mode is the decision point with no sign, or a sign facing the wrong way — a single missing junction breaks the chain and strands the traveler exactly where a choice was required, and unlike a static key there is no one place to look it up. The classic misuse is signage designed from a plan view by someone who never walks the route, so signs sit on long blank walls and vanish at the junctions that matter. The guarding discipline is to design and audit from the traveler's eye at each junction in sequence, not from the floor plan, and to verify that every decision point actually resolves the choice it poses.
