Reserve Release Gate¶
A decision rule — instantiates Decisive-Point Concentration
Holds a reserve uncommitted against the pull to spend it piecemeal, and defines the threshold conditions under which it is released all at once to reinforce success at the decisive point.
Every concentration keeps something back, and the single hardest decision in the whole pattern is when to commit it. Reserve Release Gate governs that reserve: it defaults to hold, resisting the constant pull to feed the reserve in a little at a time to plug leaks, and it opens only when defined trigger conditions show the decisive point is ripe — at which moment it releases enough, in one increment, to cross the local-superiority threshold. Its defining move is that commitment is a gated, once decision aimed at success: the reserve is not a slush fund dribbled out wherever pressure is loudest, it is a concentrated punch withheld until it can be decisive and then spent to exploit a point that is already tipping.
Example¶
A football (soccer) manager has three substitutions — a reserve of fresh legs and tactical options. The instinct is to spend them early and singly, swapping a tired player here at the 55th minute, another there. A Reserve Release Gate holds all three against that instinct until the match state crosses a trigger: chasing a goal, past the 65th minute, with the opponent's left back booked and visibly exposed. Then it commits all three at once — a winger, an overlapping full-back, and a target forward — onto that one flank, creating a decisive local overload rather than three isolated like-for-like swaps that leave the game unchanged. The reserve reinforces the flank that is cracking, not the one that is quietly failing.
How it works¶
- Default to hold. The reserve's baseline state is uncommitted; releasing it requires meeting a condition, not merely wanting to.
- Define objective release triggers. Tie the gate to observable signs that the decisive point is ripening or tipping — a state crossing, not a feeling of pressure elsewhere.
- Size the release to the threshold. Commit enough to establish local superiority and be decisive, not a token increment that gets absorbed with nothing to show.
- Treat commitment as one-way. Once released, the reserve is spent; the gate is built so the reserve is not nibbled away before the moment it exists for.
Tuning parameters¶
- Reserve fraction — how much of the total is withheld. A larger reserve preserves adaptability and a stronger late punch but weakens the initial effort everywhere.
- Trigger sensitivity — hair-trigger versus conservative. Too eager and the reserve empties at the first wobble; too cautious and the decisive moment passes with the reserve still in hand.
- Release granularity — all-at-once versus tranches. One commitment maximizes local mass; tranches preserve optionality but risk the piecemeal trap the gate exists to prevent.
- Reinforce-success test — the explicit rule distinguishing "winning here, press it" from "losing here, prop it up," which decides where a release is allowed to go.
- Reconstitution rule — whether a spent reserve is rebuilt from later slack, and how fast.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is timing under nonlinearity: when a late, concentrated mass at a tipping point beats the same resource dispersed early, the gate keeps the reserve intact for exactly that and blocks the slow bleed that leaves nothing for the decisive moment. It is also a brake on throwing good resource after bad.
Its failure mode is holding too long — the discipline of "not yet" hardens into never, the reserve is preserved past the moment it could have decided things, and the decisive point slips away uncommitted. Its classic misuse is releasing to rescue a failing effort — reinforcing failure, pouring the reserve into a collapse to feel like something is being done — or a hair-trigger that spends it on the first alarm. The discipline that guards against both is the old maxim: reinforce success, not failure[1], and only when the release is large enough to be decisive.
