Schwerpunkt Directive¶
A command directive — instantiates Decisive-Point Concentration
A commander's order that fixes the point of main effort as binding intent, gives its owner priority of support, and masks the choice behind feints — subordinating the whole force to one decisive point.
A concentration only happens if the whole organization agrees, in advance and with authority, on where it will happen. Schwerpunkt Directive is the command act that turns a decisive-point hypothesis into committed intent: it names the Schwerpunkt — the single point where the outcome is to be decided — designates who owns it and grants them priority of support over everyone else, and protects the choice with deliberate ambiguity so an adversary cannot read it and mass against it. Its defining move is that it commits authority and priority of support and conceals: where a lighter Main-Effort Statement simply declares "this is our main effort," the Directive is the binding order that makes every other unit a supporting effort, delegates how to the owner (mission command), and includes the feint that keeps the real point hidden. It does not itself move money, people, or the reserve — it commits the intent the others execute against.
Example¶
A brigade must cross a defended river. Assaulting every ford at once would be weak everywhere and decisive nowhere. The commander issues a Schwerpunkt Directive: the Schwerpunkt is the crossing at the ruined rail bridge; 2nd Battalion is the main effort and holds priority of engineer support and fires; every other unit demonstrates and feints along the line to fix the defenders elsewhere and to keep the true point ambiguous. Crucially, subordinate commanders are given the intent — seize a bridgehead and hold it — and left to decide how, so that when the plan meets reality they concentrate toward the same point without waiting for orders. The directive's teeth are that everyone is now explicitly supporting, and the real weight of the crossing is masked until it lands.
How it works¶
- Declare one Schwerpunkt. Fix a single decisive point as binding intent, not a menu of important objectives — the choice is the whole value.
- Assign an owner with priority of support. Name who owns the main effort and give them first call on the scarce enablers, so support flows to the point rather than being shared out.
- Subordinate everything else explicitly. State that other efforts are supporting, and what they owe the main effort.
- Conceal and delegate. Attach the feints and ambiguity that keep the point unread, and delegate execution to the owner so concentration survives contact with events.
Tuning parameters¶
- Singularity — one Schwerpunkt versus permission to shift it. A hard single point maximizes concentration; a named shift-condition preserves flexibility if the decisive point moves.
- Priority-of-support scope — how many of the scarce enablers the owner controls. Broader priority makes the effort truly decisive but starves the rest more sharply.
- Concealment investment — how much effort goes into feints and ambiguity. More masking preserves surprise but spends real resource on things that are not the main effort.
- Delegation latitude — tight control versus mission-command freedom. Looser delegation adapts faster but relies on subordinates sharing the intent.
- Shift criteria — the stated conditions under which the Schwerpunkt is allowed to move, and who may call it.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is alignment: it stops an organization from hedging — everyone quietly protecting their own front — by committing, with authority, to one point and making everyone else support it. Concealment adds surprise, so the concentration meets a point that has not been reinforced against it.
Its failure mode is a paper Schwerpunkt — the point is declared but not actually resourced, priority of support never shifts, and the directive is words. A subtler failure is concealment so complete that one's own supporting units do not understand what to support. Its classic misuse is naming everything the main effort, which concentrates nothing, or issuing the directive after the fact to claim a decisive point that was never really chosen. The discipline that guards against this is genuine Schwerpunkt doctrine[1]: exactly one point of main effort, real priority of support to its owner, everyone else subordinated.
How it implements the components¶
Schwerpunkt Directive fills the naming-and-authority components — the commitment of intent, not its execution:
decisive_point_hypothesis— it fixes the decisive point as a binding order, converting an analytical guess into committed intent the force acts on.main_effort_owner— it designates and empowers the owner of the main effort, giving them priority of support.deception_or_ambiguity_guard— it attaches the feints and ambiguity that keep the chosen point from being read and countered.
It does not move the money to the point (that is Priority Budget Reallocation), man it (that is Surge Staffing Roster), or decide when to commit the reserve (that is Reserve Release Gate); the concise declarative naming, absent the binding subordination and concealment, is the lighter Main-Effort Statement.

The Directive and the Main-Effort Statement are close cousins deliberately kept distinct: the Statement names the main effort in a sentence anyone can repeat; the Directive is the order that subordinates the whole force to it, grants priority of support, and masks the choice. A team can have the Statement without the Directive — a well-known intention with no teeth — which is exactly the "paper Schwerpunkt" failure above.
