The output is a map of which devices are robust, which are misread by whom, and which need repair, not a redrawn uniform.
How it works¶
- Name the social meaning at stake. Rank, membership, achievement, or permission — state what each sign is meant to convey socially.
- Sort the inference bases. For each sign, identify whether it works by resemblance, by indexing a real deed, by convention, or by layered social meaning.
- Read across audiences. Check how insiders, outsiders, newcomers, and other cultures interpret the same sign, surfacing divergent reads.
- Watch for misuse and hollowing. Flag unearned use, appropriation, and cases where a status marker's tie to real achievement has faded.
Tuning parameters¶
- Audience breadth — reviewing for in-group legibility only versus for outsiders and cross-cultural readers. Breadth catches more misreads but complicates any single design.
- Meaning layering — treating each sign as a single signal versus a layered one. Recognizing layers is richer but harder to adjudicate cleanly.
- Misuse sensitivity — how strictly to police unearned or appropriated use. High sensitivity protects the signal's value but can over-restrict organic adoption.
- Formality — whether the conventions reviewed are codified or tacit. Codified signs are easier to audit; tacit ones require ethnographic reading.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
