Warning Sign-Type Review¶
Safety review — instantiates Sign-Type Selection
Reviews whether a hazard sign should carry its meaning by resemblance, indication, learned code, text, or redundant layers, weighted by risk.
Warning Sign-Type Review is the step where, for a specific hazard, a team decides which inference basis the warning sign should use — resemblance, indexical indication, a learned code, plain text, or several redundant layers — by weighing each option against how catastrophically it could be misread. Its defining move is to treat sign type as a safety decision: the choice is driven by a risk-weighted failure model, not by which symbol is prettiest or most familiar to the design team. The review reasons about type and hands the actual construction to concrete mechanisms; it does not itself draw the pictogram or assemble the layered sign.
Example¶
A specialty chemicals lab is signing a cabinet that stores hydrofluoric acid — a hazard whose danger is famously counterintuitive, because a splash can feel mild for hours while doing deep damage. The review starts from the communication need: staff and emergency responders must grasp this is HF, it needs specific calcium-gluconate treatment, do not rinse-and-forget. Then it inventories bases: the GHS corrosion pictogram (resemblance-plus-convention), a signal word like DANGER (text), a color band (learned code), and a QR link to the treatment protocol (indexical pointer to a live document). For each, the team models the worst plausible misread — a responder treating HF like a generic acid could be fatal — and scores it by consequence. The conclusion is not one sign but a risk-justified redundancy: pictogram plus signal word plus the specific-hazard/first-aid text, because for a hazard this unforgiving, no single basis is allowed to be the only path to meaning. The build of that layered sign is then handed off.
How it works¶
- State the hazard need precisely. Name the hazard identity, its severity, and the required action — vague "caution" is a failure before type is even chosen.
- Inventory the candidate bases. Lay out resemblance, indication, learned code, text, and hybrid options as real alternatives for this hazard.
- Model each one's worst misread. For every candidate, write the most damaging plausible misinterpretation and weight it by consequence under stress and time pressure.
- Choose the type by risk. Select the basis — often mandated redundancy — that minimizes catastrophic misreading, aligned with any governing safety standard.
Tuning parameters¶
- Risk weighting — how heavily consequence severity dominates the scoring. Weighting catastrophe hard pushes toward redundancy and text; weighting it lightly permits leaner signs.
- Convention-burden tolerance — whether the audience can be trained on a code. High tolerance allows compact symbols; low tolerance forces resemblance or text.
- Redundancy level — how many reinforcing layers the review mandates. More layers cut misread risk but add clutter that can slow a reader under stress.
- Standard-compliance strictness — how tightly the choice must track a mandated scheme. Strict compliance buys legal defensibility but can override audience-specific evidence.
- Stress assumption — how degraded the reader is assumed to be. Assuming a panicked reader biases toward the most robust, least learned basis.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it stops "polished but wrong-type" hazard signs before deployment by forcing risk-first reasoning about how meaning will be inferred, in the spirit of standardized safety-sign schemes[1] that pair signal words, colors, and symbols by severity.
Its failure mode is over-specification or misplaced deference: a review can pile on redundant layers that clutter a sign and slow the very reader it protects, or it can default to a familiar standard symbol the actual audience never learned. The classic misuse is to pick the compliant pictogram without asking whether this population reads it — treating conformance as comprehension. The guarding discipline is to tie the type choice to real interpretation evidence and to the modeled failure, not to habit or checkbox compliance.
How it implements the components¶
communication_need— states the hazard identity, severity, and required action the sign must convey before any type is picked.inference_basis_inventory— lays out resemblance, indication, code, text, and hybrid options as real alternatives for the hazard.sign_type_choice— selects the primary basis, or mandated redundancy, that best survives the risk.misinterpretation_failure_model— scores each candidate by its worst plausible misread and the consequence under stress.
It does not build the concrete layered sign (hybrid_sign_layer, Hybrid Icon–Label Pairing), draw the pictogram (resemblance_basis, Pictogram Prototyping), or wire a live indicator (indexical_link, Indexical Indicator Design). Its nearest review-twin is Ritual or Status Sign Review, which weighs social interpretation and misappropriation (audience_and_context, misuse_monitor) rather than catastrophic-misread risk.

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Assessment, Review & Assurance
Rationale: Warning Sign Type Review is defined in the frozen evidence as: Reviews whether a hazard sign should carry its meaning by resemblance, indication, learned code, text, or redundant layers, weighted by risk. Its operative deployed or enacted form is therefore Assessment, Review & Assurance.
Nearest alternative: Decision, Gate & Allocation — Decision, Gate & Allocation can support this mechanism, but the evidence centers the concrete operation described above rather than the alternative family's defining operation.
Review outcome: Adjudicated after independent review; medium confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Human-Computer Interaction
Origin pattern: Historically ambiguous
Present-day reach: Universal
Rationale: Both independent reviews identify human computer interaction as the historical home of the operation—Reviews whether a hazard sign should carry its meaning by resemblance, indication, learned code, text, or redundant layers, weighted by risk.. The retained alternates document formative adjacent traditions; the reach field, not the origin field, carries later applicability.

- Psychology — Psychology's perception, cognition, behavior, and risk-communication tradition contributes a separate formative lineage to the mechanism's warning sign type review logic.
Review resolution: Both blind reviewers independently place the defining operation—Reviews whether a hazard sign should carry its meaning by resemblance, indication, learned code, text, or redundant layers, weighted by risk.—in human computer interaction. Their queued differences are secondary: reported_ambiguity, alternate_origin_disagreement, origin_mode_disagreement, domain_reach_disagreement, encyclopedia_synthesis_disagreement. Reviewer A uniquely contributes ['psychology']; reviewer B uniquely contributes ['computer_science', 'engineering_design', 'linguistics_semiotics']. I preserve the full evidence-supported union of 4 alternate domain(s), without a numeric cap. origin_mode=historically_ambiguous reflects the more specific lineage judgment in reviewer B's evidence, while domain_reach=universal separately records present-day portability. The affirmative encyclopedia-synthesis finding is preserved, and confidence=medium uses the more conservative reviewer level.
Attribution caveat: Warning-sign selection combines human factors, safety engineering, and semiotics.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Reconciled after independent review; medium confidence.
