Structured sensory-elicitation exercise — instantiates Sense-Experience Reduction Protocol

Walks an imagined observer sense by sense through the object, cataloguing what each modality would encounter under stated conditions.

Sensory Walkthrough is a structured imaginative sweep: an observer is placed, in the mind's eye, in contact with the object and led modality by modality — sight, then sound, then touch, smell, taste, proprioception, and any instrument-extended sense — to report what each channel would encounter. Where Counterfactual Conditional Translation rewrites a claim into a few formal conditionals, the Walkthrough's defining move is breadth of channel: it deliberately visits every sense in turn so that encounters a single formal rewrite would skip — a smell, a texture, a faint sound — get surfaced. Its job is not to prove anything but to build the raw inventory of what there is to observe, so that no confirming or disconfirming experience is missed simply because nobody thought to check that sense.

Example

A sensory panel is asked what it would mean for a new oat-milk batch to be "off." Rather than argue in the abstract, the facilitator runs a Sensory Walkthrough with a trained taster as the imagined observer. Sight: hold it to the light — you would see whether it is uniformly opaque or has separated into a watery layer. Smell: you would encounter either a clean cereal note or a sour, cardboard-y edge. Mouthfeel: on the tongue you would feel smooth body or a chalky, grainy drag. Taste: a faint sweetness versus a bitter aftertaste. Sound: the almost-nothing of pouring — but a curdled batch glugs differently.

The walkthrough yields a catalogue: roughly a dozen specific encounters, sorted by sense, each phrased as "you would notice…" Nobody has tasted anything yet, but "off" is no longer a hunch — it is an enumerated set of channel-by-channel observations that a formal translation can tighten and a protocol can standardize into a scoring sheet.

How it works

  • Seat the observer. Name a specific perspective — a trained panellist, a first-time customer, a technician with a hand lens — because the same object yields different encounters to different observers.
  • March through the modality inventory. Take each sense channel explicitly and in turn, refusing to stop at the one or two that come to mind first; the coverage is the method.
  • Record raw encounters, not judgments. Capture what would be noticed ("a chalky drag"), deferring any verdict about what it means or whether it disconfirms the claim.
  • Flag the empty channels. A sense that returns nothing is a finding too — it says the claim leaves that modality silent.

Tuning parameters

  • Observer expertise — a novice, a trained expert, or an instrument-aided observer. Experts notice finer encounters; novices reveal what a naive user would actually experience.
  • Modality coverage — how many channels to sweep and how far into the exotic (ultrasound, thermal). Wider coverage catches surprises but costs attention and can invent distinctions that don't matter.
  • Condition setting — the imagined circumstances of encounter (lighting, temperature, distance). Shifting them changes what each sense returns; several settings guard against a one-condition artefact.
  • Granularity — coarse ("tastes off") versus fine ("bitter at the back of the tongue after ~3 seconds"). Finer feeds a better scoring sheet but risks false precision in imagination.
  • Anchoring restraint — how much to seed the walkthrough with expected answers. Heavy anchoring speeds it but biases it toward encounters the team already believes in.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is completeness of channel: it is the antidote to a claim confirmed on one sense and quietly empty on the others, and it routinely surfaces the discriminating encounter — the off-smell, the hairline sound — that a narrow rewrite would have missed. It is also cheap, needing only a disciplined imagination before any apparatus is built.

Its central risk is that imagined experience is theory-laden — what an observer expects to encounter shapes what they "walk through," so the sweep can quietly encode the very belief it was meant to test.[1] Vivid imagination is not observation, and a Walkthrough can conjure a confident catalogue of encounters that no real observer would ever have. It is also prone to false discrimination — inventing fine sensory distinctions that don't survive contact with a real panel. The discipline is to treat its output as candidate encounters to be operationalized and actually observed, and to run it with more than one imagined observer so a single person's expectations don't set the inventory.

How it implements the components

  • observer_or_participant_perspective — seats a named observer whose senses do the walking; the walkthrough is always someone's encounter.
  • sensory_or_observational_modality_inventory — its signature contribution: the explicit, exhaustive catalogue of sense channels swept in turn.
  • counterfactual_experience_conditionals — the per-channel "you would notice…" encounters it emits as raw, informal conditionals.

It does not formalize those encounters into tested conditionals (Counterfactual Conditional Translation), fix the real controlled conditions and their cost (Observation Protocol Design), or map an instrument's readout to a value (Instrument Readout Mapping).
