Leaves the image deliberately unfinished so the viewer's own shadow or silhouette, cast into the gap, supplies the missing element — the picture resolves only with a body in it.

Shadow or Silhouette Completion arranges light, form, and surface so the work is incomplete on purpose: a gap in the composition is shaped to the outline of a human body, and the picture resolves only when a viewer stands where their cast shadow — or their silhouette against a screen — drops into that gap. The body stops being the observer and becomes a component of the image. What distinguishes it from its siblings is that the missing piece is the viewer's own shadow, supplied optically by light rather than by contact, sensing, or manipulation; the viewer completes the picture simply by placing their body in the beam.

Example

An outdoor plaza carries a memorial that, most of the day, looks like an abstract cut-steel screen throwing a broken pattern of light onto a pale wall. At a marked spot on the ground there is a pair of painted footprints. Stand on them in afternoon sun and your shadow falls precisely into the pattern's empty interval — and the broken shapes resolve into two figures reaching toward one another, the space between them exactly your own outline. You see yourself become the thing that was missing. Because the sun is low, the shadow looms larger than life across the wall, and that swelling scale is part of the reading: the piece is about the size of an absence, and you feel it in the size of your own thrown shadow. Step off the footprints and the image falls back into fragments.

How it works

  • Shape the negative space to a body. The composition is engineered so that a human shadow or silhouette of the right size and position is the one element that completes it.
  • Make placement and scale load-bearing. Where the viewer stands, and how large their shadow reads, are not incidental — they are what resolves the image and what carries its meaning.
  • Let the viewer discover their own scale. Because completion happens through their cast shadow, the viewer literally sees how large or small their body reads against the work.

Tuning parameters

  • Light geometry — the source's angle, size, and distance, which set the shadow's sharpness, its size, and where the completing spot has to be.
  • Gap tolerance — how precisely the body must be placed to resolve the image; a tight fit gives a startling snap, a loose one forgives but weakens the effect.
  • Figure-ground legibility — how clearly the work signals that a shadow is wanted, so viewers step into the beam instead of walking past.
  • Scale ratio — how large the silhouette reads against the composition; the dial that makes the body feel monumental, dwarfed, or exact.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that the viewer sees themselves become part of the meaning — presence, absence, relation, and scale are conveyed with no instruction and, often, no electronics at all. Its failure modes are practical: it depends on a specific light, so a cloudy day or the wrong hour can kill it outright, and finicky placement can leave viewers never finding the spot. It also slides easily into a photo-op — a selfie backdrop where the shareable image survives and the intended completion is lost. The classic misuse is engineering the piece for spectacle rather than reading: a shadow trick that photographs well but says nothing the incompleteness was withholding. The discipline is to make the resolved image deliver a meaning the fragments genuinely hide, and to light it reliably enough that the completion actually happens.[n1]

How it implements the components

  • completion_condition — it defines the exact state that counts as complete: the viewer's shadow or silhouette occupying the shaped gap. Until a body is in place, the work is unresolved by design.
  • body_scale_calibration — the silhouette's size against the composition is tuned so the body reads at the intended scale, letting the viewer discover scale through their own thrown shadow.

It does not sense the viewer electronically (that is Proximity Sensor Activation), respond to contact (Touch or Pressure Trigger), notate a route (Movement Path Score), or merge many silhouettes into a shared composition (Collective Input Aggregation Surface sibling).

Notes

The binding constraint is the light source. Indoors you control it and the completion is reliable; outdoors you are at the mercy of sun and weather, and the piece may only resolve for part of the day or season. Designing the work is as much about guaranteeing the light as about shaping the shadow.
