Source-Pressure Reduction Review¶
Review — instantiates Adaptive Barrier-Circumvention Response
Looks for ways to shrink the underlying demand, opportunity, or payoff that keeps generating escape pressure — so protection leans less on an ever-stronger filter that only breeds fitter survivors.
Every other mechanism here manages the filter; a Source-Pressure Reduction Review asks whether the filter is even the right lever. Its defining idea is that a barrier which only suppresses keeps selecting for whatever survives it — turn the filter up and you breed resistance faster. So the review hunts interventions that reduce the source: the demand, opportunity, payoff, exposure, or reproduction that feeds the population, so the system needs less continuous filtering. Its signature discipline is separating a genuine reduction in total pressure from mere displacement of it to another channel, population, or time.
Example¶
A retailer keeps tightening its fraud model against refund abuse; each tightening is met by a shifted tactic, and false declines on honest customers climb with every turn of the screw. The source-pressure review steps back from detection and maps what generates the abuse: a returns policy whose payoff — instant refund before inspection, on a category with high resale value — makes the behaviour worth adapting to in the first place. Instead of a smarter filter, the candidate moves become source interventions: delaying refund to post-inspection on the high-risk category, removing the resale incentive, or changing the guarantee terms — each weighed beside the detection portfolio, not instead of it. The review then checks the honest failure mode: does delaying refunds genuinely reduce abuse, or merely displace it to a different SKU or channel? Only interventions that shrink total burden — rather than relocate it — are recommended.
How it works¶
Its distinguishing target is the generator, not the survivors. It maps the generative pressure and who can influence it, separates removal from reduction from safe substitution from hidden transfer, evaluates source options alongside the protective portfolio, and tracks system-wide burden and rebound afterward. Where the filter mechanisms manage the output of the selection environment, this changes its input — the pressure that keeps producing escape opportunities in the first place.
Tuning parameters¶
- Source-lever scope — which generators are in play (policy, pricing, access, demand). A wider scope finds more leverage but crosses more owners who must be brought in.
- Reduction-vs-substitution test — how strictly a "safe substitution" must be shown not to create a fresh pressure somewhere else.
- Displacement horizon — how far out, and across how many channels, rebound is tracked before an intervention is called a success.
- Burden-accounting boundary — system-wide versus local. Too local a boundary can score a pure displacement as a win.
- Equity check — whether the source change shifts burden onto a group least able to bear it.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it is the only move that can lower selection pressure rather than merely redirecting it — often the most durable option once filtering has hit diminishing returns and started manufacturing its own resistance. Its failure mode is organizational: the source levers usually sit with owners outside the control team, whose incentives are not aligned to coverage. Its classic misuse is claiming a reduction that is really displacement — the abuse moved to another channel, population, or time and was counted as gone.[1] The discipline that guards against this is to account for burden at the system boundary and to look explicitly for the moved-not-removed pattern.
How it implements the components¶
It fills the source-side of the archetype's machinery — the components that reduce reliance on continuous filtering:
pressure_absorption_path— its primary output: concrete ways to reduce the underlying source, demand, or payoff so the system leans less on an ever-tightening filter.selection_pressure_budget— it makes the pressure/harm tradeoff explicit and argues for spending effort on source reduction rather than on more suppression that only sharpens selection.
It does NOT design the protective portfolio itself (Layered Independent-Control Design Workshop), maintain the system-wide burden-and-displacement accounting (System-Wide Net-Risk Dashboard), or set the rule for rotating filters (Conditional Control-Rotation Protocol).

Notes¶
Source reduction is usually preferred but not owned. The lever that would help most — a policy, a price, a demand — often belongs to a team with no stake in the control's coverage. That is why this is a review that must convene those owners, not a control the security or safety team can simply turn on its own.
