Source Triangulation Matrix¶
Analytical tool — instantiates Procedural Objectivity Warranting
Arrays each claim against its sources to test whether apparent corroboration is genuinely independent or just one interested origin echoed — and whether the source mix is balanced enough to trust.
Three sources saying the same thing is only strong evidence if they are actually three sources. Source Triangulation Matrix is the grid that tests exactly that: it lays each claim across the sources that support it and asks whether that support is independent — separate origins, separate incentives, separate chains of acquisition — or whether the apparent chorus traces back to a single interested origin, a coordinated message, or a shared vantage that would fail together. Its defining move is that it works across sources, on the relationships between them, rather than on any single source's presentation: it counts genuine independence, not headcount, and it flags when the whole set leans one way.
Example¶
An open-source investigation is verifying a widely shared video that claims to show a specific military strike on a specific town. Dozens of accounts are "confirming" it, which is precisely the trap. The team builds a triangulation matrix: each supporting claim (the location, the date, the munition, the attribution of blame) becomes a row, and each source becomes a column, tagged by origin and independence. Reading across, a pattern emerges — forty of the "confirmations" are re-posts of one original upload, so they are one source, not forty. The location, though, is independently corroborated: the skyline matches archived satellite imagery, a second video from a different angle shows the same building, and a shadow analysis fixes the time of day. The attribution of who fired remains single-sourced and interested — asserted only by one party to the conflict.
The matrix's verdict is graded, not binary: location and date independently corroborated; responsibility single-sourced and contested. The mix is also audited — the team notes that every human source so far comes from one side, and deliberately seeks the other side's account before publishing, not to manufacture false balance but to keep the source set from silently tilting the claim.
How it works¶
The distinguishing move is treating each source as a node with a lineage rather than a tally mark. Every supporting source is tagged by origin, acquisition chain, and incentive, then the matrix is read two ways. Down a claim's column: do the supporting sources share an origin, a coordinator, or a common failure mode — in which case their agreement is one voice, not many? Across the source set: is the mix balanced across positions and vantages, or does it over-represent one interested side? A claim is graded by its count of genuinely independent supports; the source mix is flagged when it leans. The output is a per-claim independence grade plus a balance note.
Tuning parameters¶
- Independence criterion — how strict the test for "separate" is (separate people vs. separate organizations vs. separate incentive structures vs. separate acquisition chains). Stricter criteria collapse more false corroboration but can dismiss genuinely separate sources that happen to agree.
- Balance target — what "balanced mix" means for this claim, and how hard to hunt for missing vantages. Set wrong, it drifts into false balance — treating an interested denial as equal to documented evidence.
- Origin-tracing depth — how far back each source's chain is traced before two sources are called independent. Deeper tracing catches laundering; it is slow.
- Corroboration threshold — how many independent supports a claim needs before it may be stated plainly versus hedged.
- Weighting — whether independent supports are counted equally or weighted by proximity and quality.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is defeating the specific illusion that fools careful people: manufactured or accidental consensus, where many voices amplify one origin.[n1] By counting independence rather than volume, it stops a coordinated campaign or a single viral rumor from reading as overwhelming corroboration, and its balance check keeps a source set from tilting unnoticed.
Its central failure mode is the balance dial turned the wrong way: pushed toward symmetry, the same tool that fights fake consensus manufactures false balance, granting an interested or evidence-free source equal standing beside a well-supported one because the grid "looked one-sided." It can also over-reward independence per se — two independent but equally wrong sources are still wrong — and it is only as good as the origin-tracing behind it, which can miss laundering it cannot see. The guarding discipline is to grade balance by warrant, not by symmetry: seek missing vantages to avoid a tilted set, but never promote a weak source to parity just to fill a column.
How it implements the components¶
corroboration_and_independence_test— the matrix is that test: each claim's supports are traced to their origins so that only genuinely independent corroboration counts toward its strength.balanced_source_mix_requirement— reading across the source set audits whether the mix over-represents one position and prompts the hunt for the missing vantages.
It does not govern how any single source is named, or what the audience is told about how information was obtained — that is the Attribution and Sourcing Standard's source_position_and_proximity_profile and method_transparency_note; the standard characterizes one source, the matrix tests whether many are truly independent.

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Analysis, Modeling & Optimization
Rationale: Source Triangulation Matrix operates as an analytical, modeling, inference, comparison, or optimization procedure that derives insight or a solution because it arrays each claim against its sources to test whether apparent corroboration is genuinely independent or just one interested origin echoed — and whether the source mix is balanced enough to trust.
Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Source Triangulation Matrix as 'Arrays each claim against its sources to test whether apparent corroboration is genuinely independent or just one interested origin echoed — and whether the source mix is balanced enough to trust', so its operative form is Analysis, Modeling & Optimization.
Nearest alternative: Assessment, Review & Assurance — Source Triangulation Matrix includes features of a bounded evaluation of existing evidence or work that produces a finding or disposition, but its defining operation is an analytical, modeling, inference, comparison, or optimization procedure that derives insight or a solution.
Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; medium confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Ethnography & Qualitative Methods
Origin pattern: Convergent development
Present-day reach: Universal
Rationale: Arraying claims against independent source types to detect echoed rather than genuine corroboration is qualitative triangulation. GAO case-study guidance explicitly uses evidence matrices and multiple sources to corroborate findings and expose limitations.
Related originating lineages:
- Accounting & Auditing — accounting_auditing contributes reconciliation, controls, traceability, and independent assurance to this mechanism's defining operation—Arrays each claim against its sources to test whether apparent corroboration is genuinely independent or just one interested origin echoed — and whether the source mix is balanced enough to trust—without displacing the selected primary historical lineage.
- Communication & Media Studies — Balanced sourcing and original corroboration are reporting disciplines.
- History & Historiography — Independent transmission and interested origins determine corroborative weight.
- Organizational & Management Science — Organizational design, management, and operational governance supplies a parallel or contributing lineage for the mechanism's defining operation: arrays each claim against its sources to test whether apparent corroboration is genuinely independent or just one interested origin echoed — and whether the source mix is balanced….

Review resolution: The blind reviewers disagree on primary lineage (ethnography_qualitative_methods versus history_historiography). Authoritative or primary research supports ethnography_qualitative_methods as the best historical origin: Arraying claims against independent source types to detect echoed rather than genuine corroboration is qualitative triangulation. GAO case-study guidance explicitly uses evidence matrices and multiple sources to corroborate findings and expose limitations. The cited GAO, Case Study Evaluations: Triangulation and Evidence Matrices; GAO, Assessing Data Reliability directly supports the mechanism's defining operation. All independently supported contributing domains are retained without an arbitrary cap. origin_mode=convergent records lineage, while domain_reach=universal records later applicability separately from provenance.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Researched adjudication after independent review; high confidence.

Notes¶
[n1] Circular reporting (also "false confirmation" or "information laundering") is the fallacy in which a single unverified claim appears independently corroborated because multiple outlets or sources have each repeated it, obscuring their common origin. Open-source verification groups such as Bellingcat treat tracing a claim back to its true origin — rather than counting how many places repeat it — as the core discipline. ↩
