Staged Capacity Expansion Gate¶
Staged gating protocol — instantiates Compounding Leverage
Releases capacity expansion in evidence-gated stages, enlarging the base only when the current stage is healthy and saturation is still far off.
A compounding loop can outrun its own capacity. Expand the base faster than the machinery, market, or organization can absorb, and the yield curve bends from multiplicative toward flat — you have grown the base but hollowed the returns. Staged Capacity Expansion Gate is the protocol that meters expansion: it releases each increment of added capacity only when a gate opens — when the current stage is proven healthy, the runway ahead still justifies growing, and saturation is far enough off — and holds the loop at its current size otherwise. Its defining move is controlling the regime transition: it decides when and how much to enlarge the base, staging growth so the loop keeps compounding rather than over-extending into diminishing returns or, at the other extreme, stalling from timid under-investment.
Example¶
A fast-casual restaurant chain has ten strong locations, and success tempts the founders to sign twenty new leases at once. A Staged Capacity Expansion Gate imposes a phased rollout instead: the next tranche of stores opens only when the current cohort clears defined gates — unit economics proven at the new-store level, a bench of trained managers ready, the supply chain not yet strained. Setup to outcome: expansion proceeds in cadenced waves rather than one leap, each gate checking that the base can actually absorb the next increment before capital is committed — so the chain compounds locations without the classic over-expansion that saturates a region, outruns its management depth, and craters the quality that made the first ten work.[n1] When a gate's conditions fail, the wave is held, not forced through.
How it works¶
- Read the regime. Locate the loop on its capacity-and-saturation map: how much headroom remains before returns bend, and how strained the current base already is.
- Gate each increment. Release the next tranche of capacity only when pre-set conditions hold — current stage healthy, absorptive capacity present, saturation still distant — and hold otherwise.
- Cadence the stages. Expansion comes in deliberate waves at a sustainable rhythm, not continuously, so each increment can be absorbed and evaluated before the next is released.
Tuning parameters¶
- Gate strictness — how many conditions must hold to open the next stage. Strict avoids over-extension but can under-invest and cede a lead; loose grows fast but risks outrunning capacity.
- Stage size — how large each increment is. Small steps are safer and more reversible; large steps move faster but bet more on each gate.
- Cadence — how quickly stages follow one another; the rhythm at which the base is enlarged.
- Saturation margin — how far from the diminishing-returns knee you insist on staying before expanding again.
- Hold-or-reverse policy — whether a failed gate merely pauses expansion or unwinds the last increment.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is keeping a loop inside its multiplicative regime by matching the base's growth to what it can actually absorb — avoiding both over-expansion into diminishing returns and the timid under-investment that lets a compounding window close while a rival's doesn't. Its failure modes sit on both sides of that balance: gates so strict the loop under-invests and is out-compounded; premature scaling, where a gate is opened on hope rather than proven absorption; and mistaking a temporary plateau for saturation and stopping a loop that still has runway. The classic misuse is rubber-stamping the gate to justify an expansion already decided — turning a real control into paperwork. The discipline that keeps it honest is to pre-declare each gate's conditions and to actually honor a failed gate: the value of the mechanism is almost entirely in its willingness to say "not yet."
How it implements the components¶
Staged Capacity Expansion Gate realizes the regime-control side of the archetype — the machinery that governs when the base may grow:
capacity_saturation_and_regime_map— the gate reads and acts on where the loop sits relative to saturation and its regime boundaries.compounding_runway_and_horizon— each expansion is timed against the runway remaining, so capacity is added while there is still horizon to compound over.recurrence_and_cadence_rule— it sets the cadence at which increments are released, staging growth into a sustainable rhythm rather than a continuous ramp.
It does not size the reinvested fraction within a stage (Progressive Reinvestment Allocation), measure the loop's effective rate (Effective-Rate and Doubling-Time Dashboard), or decide when to harvest value out or stop the loop (Harvest).

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Decision, Gate & Allocation
Rationale: Staged Capacity Expansion Gate operates as a case-specific gate, selection, routing, prioritization, or resource disposition because it releases capacity expansion in evidence-gated stages, enlarging the base only when the current stage is healthy and saturation is still far off.
Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Staged Capacity Expansion Gate as 'Releases capacity expansion in evidence-gated stages, enlarging the base only when the current stage is healthy and saturation is still far off', so its operative form is Decision, Gate & Allocation.
Nearest alternative: Protocol, Workflow & Routine — Staged Capacity Expansion Gate includes features of a repeatable ordered procedure or handoff sequence that coordinates action, but its defining operation is a case-specific gate, selection, routing, prioritization, or resource disposition.
Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; medium confidence.

Review resolution: The blind reviewers agree that operations_research is the primary origin and differ only on alternate origin disagreement, origin mode disagreement, domain reach disagreement. I preserve every independently explained alternate from both records rather than imposing a numeric cap. I retain cross_disciplinary_synthesis because the combined evidence shows material contributions from several lineages. The broader reach of universal records portability separately from historical provenance; encyclopedia_synthesis=true preserves the affirmative synthesis judgment where either reviewer identified one.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Reconciled after independent review; medium confidence.
Notes¶
The gate governs the regime transition, not the day-to-day loop — it is dormant between stages and decisive at stage boundaries. Its counterpart is Harvest: this gate decides when to put capacity in, Harvest decides when to take value out or stop. A gate that never once says "not yet" is decoration, not control.
