Supported Problem-Solving Session¶
Method — instantiates Helplessness Reversal
A facilitated working session that surfaces the controllable slice of a problem and clears its barriers without the helper taking the action over.
The Supported Problem-Solving Session is a live, one-on-one (or small-group) working session in which a helper sits beside the actor and works a stuck problem down to a reachable next step — then removes the practical obstacles in the way, while leaving the action itself in the actor's hands. Its defining move is the deliberate line between helping and doing: the helper supplies structure, information, and barrier-removal, but never executes the step, because a step the helper takes teaches the actor nothing about their own control. The session's product is a single reachable action the actor can now perform, with the friction that was blocking it cleared out of the way.
Example¶
A tenant facing eviction has a thick housing-assistance application she has not touched for weeks. She is not lazy; she is convinced the system is designed to defeat her, and every past form seemed to vanish into a void. A benefits navigator runs a Supported Problem-Solving Session.
They do not fill it out for her. They sit together and cut the wall of a problem down to its controllable slice: the whole case is not hers to solve, but this one form's income section, today, is. The navigator removes the barriers she could not clear alone — prints the two documents she was missing, decodes the jargon in section four, confirms the office hours — and then hands the pen back. She completes the income section herself. The distinction is the entire point: she leaves not with a finished application handed to her, but with a completed section she did herself against a system she thought was hopeless, plus a clear, unblocked next step.
How it works¶
- Cut the problem to a controllable slice. Work the overwhelming whole down to one part the actor can actually affect now, and set the rest aside explicitly rather than pretending it is all solvable.
- Locate the barriers, not the motivation. Ask what is concretely in the way — a missing document, an opaque rule, an unknown deadline — rather than treating inaction as an attitude problem.
- Remove barriers up to the line. The helper clears the avoidable friction: gathers the information, translates the jargon, makes the introduction — everything except the action itself.
- Hand the action back. The actor performs the step. The helper's restraint here is what makes the resulting success interpretable as the actor's own.
Tuning parameters¶
- Slice size — how small the controllable part is cut. Smaller guarantees the actor can complete it unaided but risks under-using their real capacity; larger stretches them but can re-overwhelm.
- Support intensity — how much friction the helper removes. More makes the action feasible faster but edges toward doing it for them; less preserves ownership but can leave the step out of reach.
- The helping line — exactly where "support" stops and "takeover" begins. Drawing it generously speeds the outcome; drawing it strictly protects the ownership that makes the win count.
- Fade rate — how quickly support is withdrawn across sessions. Faster fade builds independence sooner but risks pulling the scaffold before the actor can stand.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it makes a genuinely blocked action feasible without stealing the credit for it — the ideal repair when the actor's helplessness is real (the barriers exist) rather than merely perceived. It is scaffolding in Vygotsky's sense: support pitched at the gap between what the actor can do alone and what they can do with help, and designed to be withdrawn as that gap closes.[n1]
Its failure mode is quiet takeover: the helper, wanting to be useful or short on time, does the step "just this once," and the actor learns that outcomes still require someone else. The classic misuse is help that never fades, breeding dependence dressed as support. The guarding discipline is to hold the helping line explicitly — name, before the step, who is doing what — and to fade support deliberately so each session hands back a little more.
How it implements the components¶
The session realizes the archetype's supported-action slice — the components that make a blocked step reachable while keeping it the actor's own:
support_without_takeover— its central discipline: remove avoidable barriers and supply structure, but stop precisely short of executing the action.perceived_control_gap— cutting the problem to a controllable slice reveals the part the actor can affect, correcting the belief that the whole thing is beyond them.controllable_action— the session's product is one concrete, reachable step the actor performs themselves, now unblocked.
It does not restore the actor's decision rights or hand them a menu of choices — that choice_boundary_map work is Choice Reintroduction Protocol's. This session clears the barriers to acting on a problem; it does not govern which decisions are the actor's to make.

Editorial Notes¶
Form Classification¶
Form family: Communication, Facilitation & Learning
Rationale: Supported Problem Solving Session is defined in the frozen evidence as: A facilitated working session that surfaces the controllable slice of a problem and clears its barriers without the helper taking the action over. Its operative deployed or enacted form is therefore Communication, Facilitation & Learning.
Nearest alternative: Interface, Display & Cue — Interface, Display & Cue can support this mechanism, but the evidence centers the concrete operation described above rather than the alternative family's defining operation.
Review outcome: Adjudicated after independent review; medium confidence.
Origin Attribution¶
Primary origin: Psychology
Origin pattern: Convergent development
Present-day reach: Universal
Rationale: A facilitator helping a person define a problem, generate options, choose an action, and review results is structured problem-solving therapy and coaching. WHO guidance prescribes a problem-solving approach for coping and action planning; pedagogy and management developed parallel facilitated forms.
Related originating lineages:
- Cognitive Science — Cognitive-science research on representation, learning, and recall supplies a parallel or contributing lineage for the mechanism's defining operation: a facilitated working session that surfaces the controllable slice of a problem and clears its barriers without the helper taking the action over.

Review resolution: The blind reviewers disagree on primary lineage (education_pedagogy versus psychology). Authoritative or primary research supports psychology as the best historical origin: A facilitator helping a person define a problem, generate options, choose an action, and review results is structured problem-solving therapy and coaching. WHO guidance prescribes a problem-solving approach for coping and action planning; pedagogy and management developed parallel facilitated forms. The cited WHO, Problem-Solving Approach for Self-Harm and Suicide directly supports the mechanism's defining operation. All independently supported contributing domains are retained without an arbitrary cap. origin_mode=convergent records lineage, while domain_reach=universal records later applicability separately from provenance.
Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.
Review outcome: Researched adjudication after independent review; high confidence.

Notes¶
[n1] Lev Vygotsky's zone of proximal development is the band between what a learner can do alone and what they can do with guidance; scaffolding is support pitched at that band and, crucially, removed as the learner's competence grows. The session's "hand the action back" and "fade rate" dials are that removal made explicit. ↩
