Example¶
An endurance runner has spent sixteen weeks building to a peak weekly training volume ahead of a marathon. Racing on top of that accumulated fatigue would wreck the performance, but stopping training cold in the final weeks would cause detraining — losing sharpness and turning stiff and flat by race day. The coach tapers instead. Weekly training volume is cut by roughly 20 to 25 percent per week across the final two to three weeks, while some race-pace intensity is kept in to hold fitness — that declining ramp is the smoothing rule. Each week the coach reads the runner's response: resting heart rate, sleep quality, perceived effort, and a short tune-up run that should feel easy. If the athlete shows lingering fatigue or comes down with a cold, the taper is adjusted — extended, deepened, or the intensity pulled back — rather than pressed on regardless. How it works¶
The method sets an increment size and a cadence, moves one step, measures the response, decides whether to continue, hold, or reverse, and repeats toward an endpoint. What distinguishes it from a sliding scale is that a taper is temporal and adaptive: the same subject moves along the ramp over successive periods, and the ramp itself bends in response to how that subject is doing. The feedback is not decoration — it is the mechanism. A taper run without watching the response is just a slow, blind schedule; the monitoring and the willingness to pause or reverse are what make it a taper rather than a decree.
Tuning parameters¶
- Step size — aggressive versus gentle increments. Bigger steps reach the endpoint sooner but raise the risk of rebound, withdrawal, or shock; smaller steps are safer but drag the process out.
- Cadence — how long to hold at each level before the next step. Longer holds let the system stabilize and reveal delayed effects; shorter holds keep momentum but may advance before a problem shows.
