A Teleconnection System Map is the artifact that makes a remote-to-local structure visible — a single diagram or structured object where the local condition sits at the center and directed links reach outward to the distant drivers that shape it, each link labeled with the route it travels and where it lands locally. Its defining move is representation, not computation: it renders the wiring so a room full of people who each saw one fragment can finally point at the same picture and argue about the same thing. The map does not tell you how fast a shock travels or how strong a coupling is — it tells you the connection exists, where it runs, and whom it touches. It is the shared reference object the rest of the archetype's analyses hang their findings on.
Example¶
A contract electronics manufacturer keeps getting blindsided by line stoppages nobody saw coming. To get ahead of it, ops, procurement, and sales build a wall-sized system map. At the center is the local condition anchor: uptime on surface-mount line 3 at the Guadalajara plant. From it, directed links reach outward — to a single tantalum-refining region, to one Kaohsiung transshipment port, to a Shenzhen sub-assembler that everything funnels through. Each link is drawn as a route, hop by hop (mine → refiner → capacitor maker → sub-assembler → our receiving dock), and each terminates in a labeled local impact: which SKUs starve, which customer commitments slip.
The finished map does not simulate anything. What it does is give three departments who each held one piece a single object to reason over. In the first review, sales points at the map and realizes two of their largest accounts depend on the same choke point that procurement had been treating as a minor vendor — a collision that no spreadsheet had surfaced because no one document had ever held the whole shape at once.
How it works¶
- Anchor first. Place the local condition at the center; everything else earns its place by connecting back to it. A map with no anchor drifts into a general world diagram.
- Draw directed links as routes, not assertions. Each edge names the path influence travels (its intermediaries), so the connection can be inspected and challenged rather than merely asserted.
- Layer by distance. Remote drivers, mediators, and local impacts occupy distinct bands, so the eye reads the direction of influence.
- Mark link status. Annotate each edge as observed, inferred, or speculative — the map is only honest if a hunch and a measured coupling look different on the page.
- Keep it living. The map is a standing reference that is updated as the analytic siblings confirm, redraw, or delete links.
Tuning parameters¶
- Granularity — how many hops each pathway shows. Finer detail surfaces hidden intermediaries but crowds the map and invites false confidence in unverified links.
- Layout basis — geographic, process-flow, or institutional. Each makes a different kind of coupling legible; the wrong basis hides the pattern that matters.
- Boundary width — how far outward the map reaches. Too narrow and it misses the real driver; too wide and it absorbs every global factor and stops being usable.
- Annotation richness — bare topology versus fully labeled routes, lags, and confidence. More annotation is more useful and more effort to keep current.
- Anchor count — one local condition or several. Multiple anchors reveal shared choke points but can turn the map into an everything-affects-everything tangle.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it is a boundary object[n1] — an artifact coherent enough to serve as common ground across procurement, ops, and sales, yet flexible enough that each reads its own concern into it. That shared picture is what lets distributed fragments snap into a single structure and what makes cross-boundary coordination even possible.
Its failure mode is that a well-drawn map looks authoritative whether or not its links are true. A confident diagram invites people to treat drawn arrows as verified ones, and it quietly goes stale as routes reroute and dependencies shift. The classic misuse is presenting the map itself as evidence — "look, they're connected" — when every arrow is still a hypothesis. The guarding discipline is to keep link-status honest on the page and to pair the map with the analyses that actually test its edges, so the artifact organizes evidence rather than substituting for it.
How it implements the components¶
The map realizes the representation side of the archetype — the object that holds the structure, not the reasoning that fills it:
