How it works¶
- Fix the coupling, then branch. Take the remote-to-local link as established by the map and its analyses, and vary only the remote development across a few plausible futures.
- Keep the branch set small and spanning. Two to four branches that bracket the real uncertainty, not a dozen — enough to cover the range, few enough to decide over.
- Attach a local impact and an option to each branch. For every branch, state the concrete local consequence and the specific preparedness move and threshold it triggers.

- Decision-linkage tightness — whether every branch names a concrete action and trigger, or merely describes. Tighter linkage makes the brief actionable; loose linkage makes it an essay.
- Confidence disclosure — how explicitly each branch's likelihood and evidence are stated. More disclosure resists false certainty and can read as hedging to an impatient audience.
- Length and audience — a one-pager for a board versus a fuller brief for planners. Shorter forces prioritization and risks omitting a live branch.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is making a remote coupling usable by leadership: in the tradition of scenario planning[n1], it preserves optionality and pressure-tests decisions across divergent futures without pretending to predict which one lands. The brief turns "there is a distant risk" into "here are our three moves and what triggers each."
Its failure mode is anchoring on one vivid branch — the dramatic closure everyone remembers — while the mundane, more likely branch goes under-planned; false balance among branches of wildly different plausibility is the mirror error.
