Converts an open-ended "who lasts longer" contest into a bounded process with a hard deadline and a defined terminal rule — so the fight ends by design at a known date instead of by exhaustion.
A war of attrition is dangerous partly because it is open-ended: with no fixed end, the deciding variable becomes who can endure longest, and the fight burns until someone breaks. Time-Boxed Contest Conversion re-specifies the contest itself. It imposes a hard deadline and a pre-agreed terminal resolution — final offers, a split, an auction, a mutual walk-away — so that endurance stops being the variable that decides anything. Its distinguishing feature is structural: rather than helping a party exit an unbounded contest, it changes the contest's definition from open-ended attrition into a finite game with a known end, capturing the salvage value that indefinite fighting would otherwise burn away.
Example¶
A startup acquisition negotiation has dragged on for months. The acquirer and the founders are each slow-walking, each hoping the other grows desperate — while diligence costs mount, the founders are distracted from the business, and the startup's momentum quietly bleeds. Both sides agree to convert the contest: a time-box — "best-and-final terms exchanged by Friday two weeks out; if the remaining gap is under ≈10%, we split the difference; if it's wider, both walk and the deal is dead." The deadline plus the terminal rule turns an endurance test into a bounded decision no one can win merely by waiting. How it works¶
- Impose a hard deadline. Redefine the contest as finite, with a fixed date by which it must resolve.
- Pre-commit a terminal rule. Fix in advance how it ends — sealed final offers, a split, an auction, arbitration, or mutual walk — choosing a rule that does not reward waiting.
- Make the deadline credible. Back it with a real walk-away, grounded in the salvage map, so both sides believe it will actually bind.
- Optionally couple to a neutral. Have a third party run the terminal close, so the deadline can't be quietly extended by the more patient side.
Tuning parameters¶
- Deadline length — short enough to stop the bleed, long enough for a real decision.

When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it removes endurance as the deciding variable and caps the contest's duration, stopping the ongoing burn by design. The dollar-auction[n1] escalation trap only runs while a contest is open-ended; bounding it in time defuses the trap at the root.
It misleads when the deadline isn't credible or the terminal rule still rewards brinkmanship. A deadline everyone privately knows will slip is just theater that adds a round of posturing; a terminal rule that can be gamed (final-offer arbitration played strategically, for instance) quietly reimports the attrition it was meant to end; and a rushed conversion can stampede a party into a bad deal. The discipline that guards against this is to make the deadline genuinely binding through a real walk-away, and to choose a terminal rule under which waiting confers no advantage.
