The Timeboxed Blue-Sky Sprint suspends evaluation by fencing it out of a fixed block of time. For a declared, short window — thirty minutes, a morning, a day — criteria are off; when the clock runs out, the window hard-closes and convergence begins. What makes it this mechanism is that its lever is the container, not the conduct: it does not tell people how to generate (no prompts, no quotas, no yes-and) or how to score afterward — it only defines when suspension starts and, crucially, when it ends. The timebox is simultaneously permission and deadline: it grants a protected span where wild thinking is safe, and it guarantees, by the same stroke, that the span will not run forever. Its bet is that the reason divergence either never starts or never stops is that its boundaries are vague — so make them a clock everyone can see.

A small nonprofit tackling household food waste keeps meaning to "think bigger" but every meeting slides into logistics. They run a Timeboxed Blue-Sky Sprint: a ninety-minute block, on the calendar, with a one-page contract read aloud at the top — for the next ninety minutes we are inventing, not deciding; cost, staffing, and grant rules are suspended and listed here; at 3:30 we stop and switch to sorting. The fixed window does two things at once. Because there is a deadline, the room fills fast — people who would have hedged for an hour throw out half-formed ideas to beat the clock, including a "wonky-produce subscription for schools" that would never have survived an immediate grant-rules objection. And because the window is fixed, the session cannot dissolve into endless dreaming: at 3:30 the timer ends the divergent phase and the group crosses a clean line into convergence, carrying the parked criteria back with them. The sprint made no idea good and scored none of them; it only guaranteed that divergence both happened and ended.
How it works¶
The sprint is defined by its boundaries, not its middle. First, a phase contract declares the timebox up front — its purpose, its length, its topic boundary, and the explicit statement that this is a divergent, non-deciding block. Second, a register of the suspended criteria is posted so that "suspended" reads as temporarily parked and coming back, not abolished — the same list will be handed to whatever convergence step follows. Third, a hard reentry gate: when the timebox expires, divergence ends — the clock, not the group's mood or the loudest voice, triggers the switch to convergence. Everything between the boundaries — how ideas are generated, whether they are captured, how they are later judged — is left to other mechanisms the sprint can host inside its window.
Tuning parameters¶
- Box length — minutes versus a full day. Short boxes create urgency and beat perfectionism but cut off slow thinkers; long boxes reach further but risk fatigue and drift within the window.
- Reentry trigger — pure clock, or clock-plus-condition ("stop at 3:30 or when we hit fifty ideas"). A pure clock is unambiguous; a condition adapts to output but reintroduces a judgment call about when "enough" is enough.
- Topic boundary width — a tight prompt versus a wide-open "blue sky." Tight boxes go deep on one question; wide boxes range broadly but can scatter.
- Recurrence — a one-off sprint or a standing cadence. Regular sprints build the muscle and normalize suspension; one-offs are easier to schedule but easily crowded out.

The classic misuse is treating the sprint's output as decisions because "we spent the whole morning on it," when the sprint deliberately scored nothing.
