Valence Tracking Log is the running record of how attitude toward the target moves over the course of the exposure program. Its defining move is longitudinal comparison: it captures a baseline before exposure begins and then, cycle after cycle, records the affective reaction and classifies it — softening, stable, backlash, numbness, or adverse event — against that baseline and against the previous entry. It is an instrument, not a decision: it produces the trajectory the rest of the machinery reads, but it never itself climbs a rung, halts the program, or changes the context. Its whole reason for existing is that "they're participating" and "they're warming to it" look identical from the outside, and only a tracked series can tell them apart.
Example¶
A hospital finance department is rolling out an expense-reporting tool the staff openly resent — early use coincided with a chaotic quarter-close, so the tool now carries the memory of that stress. Before the guided-practice sessions start, the change lead records a baseline: a short anonymous pulse on frustration, perceived competence, and willingness to use the tool unprompted, plus a count of help-desk complaints tagged to it. Then each week the log adds a row: the same pulse, the complaint count, and a one-line qualitative note. By week five the numbers tell a story a single end-of-rollout survey never could — frustration is drifting down and unprompted use is rising, except in the accounts-payable team, where willingness has flatlined while complaints have quietly gone to zero. The log flags that flat-with-silence pattern as possible numbness or resignation rather than acceptance, and the change lead goes to talk to that team instead of declaring victory. The value was never the last number; it was the shape across the weeks and the ability to see one group diverge from it.
How it works¶
The log fixes a small set of indicators that can be read the same way every cycle — self-reported affect, a behavioral proxy (unprompted use, dropout, complaint volume), and a brief qualitative note — and captures them once at baseline and once per exposure cycle. Each new reading is scored against the baseline and the prior reading, then labeled with the archetype's response classes so a reviewer sees not just a number but a direction. What distinguishes it from its siblings is that it is deliberately inert: it measures and classifies, and stops there. Tuning parameters¶

- Numbness sensitivity — how aggressively flat-affect-with-falling-complaints is flagged as possible resignation rather than acceptance. High sensitivity catches hidden harm but raises false alarms.

When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it protects the archetype's hardest invariant — measurement separation — keeping reduced aversion from being confused with silence, compliance, or habituation to harm.
