Familiarity Sampling Trial is the small, low-commitment taste — one bounded encounter with a precisely-defined slice of the target, offered to find out whether a first contact is tolerable and how the person actually reacts. Its defining move is scoping down: it pins the target to a narrow, specific sample (not "jazz" but "this ninety seconds of this one track") and reads the reaction against the person's stated starting stance. It is not a program, not a ladder, and not a running log; it is a single trial, closer to a taste test than a course of treatment. Its purpose is to answer a prior question — is there any appetite here at all, and is a first step even palatable? — before anyone invests in building a full exposure sequence.
Example¶
A public library wants to widen what its patrons listen to, and knows that "modern jazz" is a genre many say they dislike on sight. Rather than programming a six-week series nobody has agreed to, a librarian sets up a sampling trial at a listening booth. First she scopes the target precisely: not "jazz," not even "bebop," but a single ninety-second excerpt of one accessible, melodic track — the narrowest, most interpretable slice she can isolate. Before the patron listens, she asks two quick questions: how much do you expect to dislike this, and how curious are you? Those answers are the starting stance. Then the patron hears the excerpt once, and she notes the immediate reaction against what they predicted. Some wrinkle their nose exactly as forecast; a surprising number say "huh — that wasn't what I thought jazz was." That single comparison — expected aversion versus actual first-taste reaction — is the whole output. It tells the library which patrons have real appetite for a longer sequence and which precisely-scoped slice made the difference, without committing anyone to a program they never wanted.
How it works¶
The trial does two things and then stops. It defines the sample — narrowing the target to the smallest specific, interpretable instance, so the encounter is with a concrete thing rather than a vague category — and it reads the reaction against a starting stance, capturing what the person expected to feel just before the taste and what they actually felt just after. The comparison is the deliverable: a single before/after on one bounded encounter. What distinguishes it from its siblings is its singleness and scope: it is one small taste used to test appetite, not an ordered sequence, not a recurring social occasion, and not a longitudinal record. It deliberately does not climb, repeat, or track over time.
Tuning parameters¶
- Sample size and specificity — how small and how precisely bounded the taste is. A narrower sample keeps the first encounter tolerable and isolates what is really disliked; too narrow and it no longer represents the target.
- Stance-capture depth — how much of the starting attitude is recorded (a single expectation vs. a short profile). Richer capture makes the reaction interpretable; heavier capture makes the trial feel like an exam.
- Framing of the ask — how the sample is offered (as an experiment, an invitation, a favor). Framing changes the reaction as much as the sample does.
- Number of variant samples — whether one slice is tried or a few contrasting slices. Multiple variants find the most palatable entry point but blur which one moved the person.
- Commitment signal — how clearly the trial is presented as no-strings. Lower implied commitment gets more honest first reactions; higher implied commitment biases toward polite acceptance.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it buys cheap information before expensive commitment: it finds out whether appetite exists and which entry-slice works, without building a sequence nobody asked for. It is a single-shot probe of the mere-exposure effect — the tendency for liking of a stimulus to grow with familiarity — used to check whether that effect has anything to work with here.[n1]
Its failure mode is reading too much into one taste. The mere-exposure effect is built on repetition; a single sample can only test tolerability, not predict eventual liking, and treating one encouraging reaction as proof the whole program will succeed overreaches the evidence badly. A trial can also mislead by scoping the sample so flatteringly that it no longer represents the real target, or by extracting a polite reaction that reverses in private. The discipline that keeps it honest is to treat the trial as a go/no-go on whether to sequence at all rather than a forecast of the outcome, to keep the sample representative, and to minimize the felt commitment so the first reaction is candid.
