Example

An engineering team cannot agree on how their new payments system should be structured — each engineer has a different mental model of where money "lives" and who is responsible for a failed charge. They run an Event Storming session:[n1] a long roll of paper on the wall, everyone with sticky notes, placing domain events ("PaymentAuthorized," "ChargeFailed," "RefundIssued") left to right in time. The instant the notes go up, the disagreement becomes physical — two engineers place "RefundIssued" in incompatible spots, which exposes that they hold different models of when a refund can happen. The room argues it out at the wall, moves the note, and adds a "CustomerNotified" event that nobody's private model had included until the gap on the paper made its absence obvious. By the end there is a shared model on the wall that none of the participants walked in with — it was built by the collision of their partial ones. (Someone still has to photograph it before it's erased.)

How it works

  • Start from a blank shared surface. No pre-built model is brought in; the surface is deliberately empty so the model is constructed, not presented.
  • Externalize partial models simultaneously. Everyone contributes pieces at once — notes, boxes, arrows — so several private models land on the same surface and their overlaps and conflicts become visible.
  • Challenge and move in real time. When two contributions clash, the room argues and edits the surface immediately; disagreement is metabolized into the drawing rather than deferred.
  • Converge to a shared drawing. The session ends when the wall holds a model the room collectively endorses — cheaply built, freely rearranged, owned by everyone who drew on it.

Tuning parameters

  • Facilitation tightness — loose free-drawing versus a structured notation (events, actors, commands). Structure keeps a large group coherent; looseness keeps a small one fast and creative.
  • Group size and mix — who is at the wall. A wider mix surfaces more conflicting models but is harder to converge; a narrow one moves fast but can miss a viewpoint.
  • Surface medium — physical wall-and-stickies versus a shared digital canvas. Physical is faster and more visceral; digital is remote-friendly and self-archiving.
  • Convergence pressure — how hard the facilitator pushes toward one agreed model versus letting alternatives coexist. Pushing yields a decision; holding open preserves genuine disagreement worth keeping.

Its strength is speed and ownership: it is the fastest way to fuse several people's partial models into one, and because everyone drew on the wall, the result carries a shared commitment that a circulated document rarely earns. It excels exactly when the model is distributed across people and none of them holds the whole thing.

Its failure mode is dominance capture: a live room amplifies the loudest or most senior voice, so the wall can quietly record one person's model as if it were the group's — the archetype's classic "group map that is really the powerful participant's map." A second hazard is impermanence: the session's energy produces a model that vanishes when the board is wiped.
