Separates the abstract work from its expressions and its concrete manifestations so each identity decision is made at the level it actually belongs to.

A Work–Expression–Manifestation Matrix places a work's instances into distinct levels — the abstract Work (the identity itself), its Expressions (specific realizations: a translation, an arrangement, an edition's text), and its Manifestations (the concrete carriers: this pressing, this file, this printing) — and maps which manifestations realize which expression of which work. Its distinguishing contribution is the levels themselves: it supplies the altitudes at which every other identity question ("is this the same work? the same expression? just a different manifestation?") can be asked cleanly, instead of being muddled across levels — the Work / Expression / Manifestation distinction that library science formalized as FRBR.[n1] It is the frame the other mechanisms decide within.

Example

A library is cataloguing a symphony and keeps tripping over "is this the same thing?" The matrix sorts it. The Work is the symphony as an abstract composition. Its Expressions include the composer's revised score, a critical edition, and a jazz reharmonization — each a distinct realization of the same work. Its Manifestations are concrete: a vinyl pressing of one recording, the streaming master of another, the printed critical-edition score, a live-performance recording from a given year. Laid in the matrix, the confusions dissolve: a remastered reissue is a new manifestation of the same expression (identity fully preserved); the jazz reharmonization is a new expression of the same work (same work, different expression); and a "symphony" that shares only the title but not the musical content is a different work. Each downstream decision — how to cite, whether a change forks, what a persistent identifier should point at — now attaches to a definite level rather than floating between them.

How it works

  • Three levels, explicitly separated — Work (abstract identity), Expression (a specific realization), Manifestation (a concrete carrier), with Item added where individual copies matter.
  • Relate down, not across — each manifestation links to the one expression it embodies, each expression to the one work it realizes; those links are the model's substance.
  • Inventory the manifestations under each expression — the manifestation level is the running list of concrete carriers that realize each expression.
  • Assign each question to a level — route "same work?", "same expression?", and "same manifestation?" to the layer that can answer it, so identity isn't argued at the wrong altitude.

Tuning parameters

  • Level count — the classic three (or four with Item) versus a simplified two-level split. More levels are precise but heavier; fewer are easy but blur distinctions.
  • Where to draw the work/expression line — how much realization difference (a translation? a heavy revision?) counts as a new expression versus a new work. This is the model's most consequential dial.
  • Manifestation granularity — how finely concrete carriers are distinguished (every pressing, or just format classes).
  • Domain vocabulary — whether to use the library terms verbatim or map them to a field's own words (release / build / artifact in software).
  • Strictness — whether every instance must be placed before it can be governed, or placement is best-effort.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it dissolves the single most common identity confusion — conflating a work with one of its carriers — by giving the conversation explicit levels, so a reissue, a translation, and a genuinely new work stop being argued as though they were the same kind of change.

Its failure modes are the failure modes of any model meeting messy reality. Aggregations, serials, heavily revised editions, and born-digital works that blur expression and manifestation force judgment calls the clean grid can make look more settled than they are. Drawn too rigidly it imposes crisp boundaries on inherently fuzzy cases; drawn too loosely it stops discriminating. And placing an instance at a level is itself an identity judgment that the matrix organizes but does not make. The discipline is to treat the levels as a decision-support scaffold, document the borderline placements rather than pretending they're obvious, and let a boundary-case table carry the exceptions the grid can't.

How it implements the components

It fixes the levels but does not author the authoritative identity statement for a given work — that is the Abstract Work Register — nor screen a specific change against those levels, which is Identity Preservation Checklist; the running edition listing it seeds is maintained by the Edition and Manifestation Catalog.
