Bimodality¶
Core Idea¶
Bimodality is a distributional shape with two distinct local maxima separated by a lower-density interval. It is descriptive and resolution-dependent. It does not by itself say whether the modes were produced by a mixture, two stable regimes, selection, measurement, polarization, or an institutional rule.
Broad Use¶
The shape appears in mixture models, phenotype measurements, physical order parameters, product and credential continua, and response-time data.
Clarity¶
Bimodality separates “there are two concentrations” from the much stronger claims that the observations form natural categories, that they moved apart, or that a specific mechanism created the gap.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction compresses a distribution to two peaks and a valley while requiring the analyst to retain binning, smoothing, measurement precision, and sample-support conditions.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Establish that two modes are robust to reasonable resolution choices, then test candidate producers. Decompose pooled populations before treating the shape as evidence of a single two-regime process.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The same warnings about smoothing, mixture, and mechanism underdetermination apply to data from physics, biology, markets, and psychology.
Example¶
A housing stock can cluster around detached houses and large apartment buildings with few intermediate forms. The stock is bimodal by scale; whether zoning, cost, or preference produced the gap remains a separate question.
