Setup–Resolution Pair¶
Core Idea¶
A setup–resolution pair is an ordered relation in which an initiating element opens a typed demand and a causally linked answering element discharges it, allowing the pair to function as one completed higher-order unit. The setup determines what would count as an adequate resolution. A setup creates an unresolved expectation, obligation, question, instability, or dependency; the demand remains active; the resolution is linked to that setup; and a closure test distinguishes completion from mere succession.

Narrative payoffs, jokes, request–response protocols, contracts, proofs, questions, musical cadences, and staged mechanisms preserve the open-demand–answer–closure roles.
Clarity¶
Tension-and-release concerns accumulated pressure and relief. Question–answer and promise–performance are subtypes. Narrative setup and payoff is one domain realization. Generic sequencing provides before and after without a typed demand or discharge relation.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction turns scattered cases into one role-based test: identify the required elements, test their relation, and reject the classification when a constitutive commitment is missing.
