Tensions in Practice¶
Two useful principles can ask different things of the same system. Explore what creates the conflict, change the arrangement, and see what each choice protects or gives up.
These are contextual illustrations, not universal opposites or a ranking of the best solution. Some choices separate the competing demands; others leave a cost that has to be carried.
Software modules · change and diagnosis
How can a module stay changeable and diagnosable?
The aims interfere when one exposure boundary serves both ordinary use and diagnosis. Closing it can hide needed evidence; opening it can expose implementation details that callers start relying on.
User-facing services · telemetry and disclosure
Who should see the detail that makes diagnosis possible?
The evidence useful for diagnosis can itself carry protected facts. Reducing fields or granularity can remove needed clues, while releasing more detail widens what an observer can learn about users or customers.
Image storage and later analysis
What might a smaller file prevent you from asking later?
A loss criterion decides which distinctions can be discarded. Looking acceptable for one task does not establish that an unanticipated task still has the information it needs.
A shared operational default
When should a shared default be reopened?
Frequent change disrupts implementation; slow change can preserve obsolete practice. The difficult choice is what evidence or context change should reopen the default.
Capacity in one planning window
Will the spare capacity still be there when work arrives?
A reserve carries a resource cost but loses its protective role when every part of it is committed. Its useful size depends on uncertainty, consequences and whether it can actually be deployed.
Derived results · reads and updates
How much coordination should a fresh answer require?
Keeping a derived copy current requires update or invalidation work. Reducing that coordination makes reuse cheaper but permits a gap between the source and the answer.
Work pipelines · temporary and sustained overload
Should excess work wait in a queue or at its source?
A buffer buys temporary separation by storing excess work. Throttling avoids that accumulation by withholding permission to produce or send, so the producer carries the waiting instead.
Concurrent updates · independent records
How much work should one lock make wait?
A broad lock uses one exclusion boundary for many operations, so it serializes even independent work. Splitting that boundary removes some contention but adds coordination responsibilities, especially when an operation needs several records.
Redundant service · design and validation
Should redundant paths use the same implementation?
Changing implementations can reduce a shared failure mode, but every additional design and its interactions enlarge the validation and maintenance problem.
Service faults · acceptable output boundaries
When is reduced service acceptable—and when must it stop?
Continuing protects availability but can propagate an unacceptable result if the remaining function is not trustworthy. Stopping avoids that output while denying service that might still have been usable.
A small chair workshop
When does another specialist stage stop helping?
Narrower roles can improve a stage while adding dependencies between stages. The gain matters only if it exceeds the work of coordinating and recombining the outputs.
A network of local service teams
Who decides the promise, and who decides how to keep it?
A decision cannot simultaneously belong entirely to a local team and entirely to the network. Moving its boundary changes what the other level is allowed to decide.
A community irrigation canal
How can access stay useful without exhausting the shared supply?
Each user can receive the full benefit of another withdrawal while bearing only part of the loss imposed on the group. Rules can address that mismatch, but create allocation decisions and enforcement work.
An illustrative library after flooding
After disruption, what exactly should return?
Recovering the old configuration can restore continuity while reinstating its vulnerability. Reorganizing can address that vulnerability while disrupting familiar access and operations.
Two founders using shared funds
How much should a partner be able to do before you check?
The freedom that makes reliance useful also creates exposure to the partner’s conduct. Putting a check before the action can reduce some exposure while imposing effort and delay.
A study with an unexpected pattern
How can an unexpected pattern become a new claim?
Following a surprise uses the data to choose the question. Treating that selected question as if it had been fixed in advance hides the selection step; refusing to explore loses a source of discovery.
Replacing a working service
What must stay alive for a decision to remain reversible?
A fallback preserves flexibility by retaining capabilities that a focused cutover would release. Those retained capabilities consume resources even when no return is needed.
Checking a pair of temperature instruments
What can two agreeing instruments fail to reveal?
An internal comparison is convenient but can recycle the error it is meant to detect. An independent reference can break that circle, while introducing its own maintenance and uncertainty obligations.
Browsing a deliberately small fiction catalog
Must every reader choose the finest category?
Finer categories add useful distinctions and additional rules to learn or apply. Coarser categories reduce that work by withholding distinctions from the current view.
Delivering instructions that people can use
What does passing the procedure actually establish?
A thin requirement is easy to check because it omits parts of the wider intent. Treating success against that requirement as proof of the entire purpose hides the omitted remainder.
Repeated requests · lost replies
How long must a system remember that work already happened?
The retry promise lasts only as long as the required identity can be recognized. Extending that promise costs retained state; enforcing its end makes some legitimate recovery attempts fail visibly.
Work scheduling · one service slot
Whose waiting should a queue shorten?
The same service capacity can distribute waiting differently. A rule that improves short-job response can transfer the delay to long jobs.
Parallel workers · cached data
Should the next request follow spare capacity or familiar data?
Workers can be interchangeable in capability while differing in their preparation for a particular request. A placement that spreads load can add data-access work.
Grouped processing · sparse arrivals
What releases the last items when a batch never fills?
A size trigger protects group size but depends on future arrivals. A time trigger protects release opportunity but cannot promise an economical batch size.
Concurrent work · two needed resources
Should a wait cycle be impossible, or recoverable?
A universal order restricts acquisition before a cycle occurs. Detection and recovery retain flexibility but require an actual interruption after a cycle is found.
Mechanical response · displaced spring and mass
Is reaching the target enough, or must motion settle there?
Damping removes motion energy. Its amount changes the response regime: a prompt crossing can carry remaining motion, while a non-oscillatory return can be slow.
Tank filling · pump switching
Should the same level always produce the same switch state?
A wider separation between start and stop thresholds protects the current state against noise, but permits more deviation before a reversal.
Feedback control · delayed measurement
How much should the actuator move before an earlier correction is visible?
Gain and delay interact. Restricting actuator movement can reduce abrupt correction, but cannot make old information current or guarantee a stable loop.
Interface updates · delayed replies
What should the screen show before the true result arrives?
A local preview can hide waiting from the display but cannot eliminate the underlying delay or the possibility of contradiction.
Equipment interfaces · one known mismatch
Should a wrong connection raise a warning or be unable to fit?
A warning communicates a problem without removing the action. Physical incompatibility removes the selected action but costs redesign and constrains future compatibility.
An illustrative bug-report reward
What work does the reward make attractive?
A cheap observable count can diverge from useful contribution. A closer assessment takes effort, can be contested, and can itself become a new target for gaming.
A workshop with a long-lived press
What survives when the experienced maintainer leaves?
The artifact and its know-how have different lifetimes. Teaching and practice consume current expert time, but preserving only the machine can leave it without a usable maintenance path.
Two toy workshops sharing four new tools
Equal in what: the new grant or the resulting stock?
With different starting stocks and a fixed new supply, equal new awards and equal resulting totals select different allocations. Treating the initial difference as relevant changes both the rule and who receives the next tool.
An illustrative repair marketplace
How can a poor record change if it blocks every new interaction?
Refusal can be justified by past evidence while also stopping the interactions that could produce contrary evidence. Reopening that path necessarily creates some exposure.
A writer’s self-imposed site block
What else does a strong self-imposed block prevent?
The restriction protects the plan by removing a future option. The same restriction cannot automatically distinguish a tempting detour from genuinely useful new information.
Two makers supplying interchangeable fixtures
Which parts actually need to be the same?
A shared specification enables fit, but extending it into the interior restricts designs that could still interoperate. A narrower scope preserves those choices while leaving their differences to be managed.
Designing a reusable workshop tool
Where do different perspectives actually change the plan?
Separate perspectives can remain available without influencing one another. Combining them can reveal blind spots, but takes translation, discussion, and choices that may leave some preferences unmet.
A hypothetical workshop closing signal
Does everyone seeing the signal mean everyone knows what to do?
Public awareness of an event does not supply a shared interpretation. A response rule can close that gap, but constrains local interpretations and has its own learning and revision costs.
An illustrative grazed field
Can yesterday’s safe limit become today’s overload?
The limit is not independent of past use: sustained overload can reduce the base that supports future use. Reusing an old number saves assessment work while potentially planning against capacity that no longer exists.
A community workshop choosing its next program
When should the working record become public?
Immediate publication can change what people are willing to say. Delayed publication can protect working space while withholding the very information others need for timely scrutiny.
A tiny archive with two relevant records
What can a search miss by stopping early?
Stopping early saves inspection work by leaving some candidates unexamined. That also leaves later relevant records outside the returned set, even when the test correctly classifies every record it sees.
Four feasible designs in an invented search space
Does no better next step mean no better design?
A rule that accepts only immediate improvement cannot cross the worse intermediate design in this example. Extra starts expand the explored region but consume effort and supply no general global certificate.
Three invented delivery plans
Which preference is hidden inside the winning score?
A single score can give a definite answer by embedding a value judgment. Keeping the objectives separate exposes the tradeoff but may leave several undominated choices.
Choosing from an invented list of venues
Which options disappear when the first acceptable one wins?
The early stopping rule makes the order of encounters consequential: once an acceptable option appears, later options cannot influence the choice. Looking farther costs additional evaluation and comparison.
Updating an uncertain event rate
When is an exact update exact about the wrong model?
Restricting the prior and observation model can make an exact update easy. Expanding what the model can express may remove that shortcut and add costly, fallible numerical computation.
Studying how a support service is used
Which case should be studied next—and for what purpose?
The next case most useful for filling a model’s gap need not be the next case prescribed by a population sampling design. Spending effort for one goal does not automatically produce evidence for the other.
An invented step change in a measured level
When does averaging create a level that never persisted?
A longer averaging window gathers more observations but can cross a change in the target. Splitting the window preserves that change while leaving fewer observations to support each estimate.
A survey question used in two language communities
Does the same procedure preserve the same meaning?
A fixed instrument can preserve surface uniformity while changing meaning across contexts. Adaptation can preserve local relevance while breaking a simple one-to-one comparison of answers.
A test that produces an unexpected result
Which part of a failed prediction should change?
A failed prediction demands revision somewhere in the tested bundle, but it does not automatically identify which member failed. Acting promptly risks blaming the claim too soon; investigating auxiliaries can delay warranted rejection.
A town survey with a large and a small district
Where should a limited survey budget spend its interviews?
Interviews directed toward the small district must come from elsewhere in a fixed budget. That reallocation changes precision priorities and requires the town-wide analysis to account for unequal selection probabilities.
Document service · acting for a caller
Whose permission follows a request through a service?
A service can be both an authenticated actor and a deputy for someone else. Using its standing grant is simpler, but does not by itself preserve the originator’s permitted scope.
Temporary grants · paused work
Can permission end before the authorized task does?
Task duration and credential lifetime are different clocks. Tight expiry reduces standing exposure while creating a dependency on fresh authorization for late resumption.
Candidate execution · disposable environment
Which outside interaction must a test actually allow?
Removing a permission can remove both an unwanted effect and the behavior needed as evidence. Every permitted crossing must therefore have a defined scope and an observation plan.
Whole-role handoff · an operations shift
Can knowledge overlap without creating two commanders?
The command role can change at a documented moment while its operational state is learned over an interval. Treating both transfers as the same instantaneous event risks losing understanding; treating briefing overlap as shared command creates ambiguity.
Signed artifacts · accepted issuer keys
Does another trusted issuer add availability or another authority path?
The issue/verify split can remain intact for each key while the total set of accepted issuing authorities grows.
Versioned layout · merge-difficult artifact
Should editors wait for one file or reconcile two successors?
Parallel branches defer coordination to integration. Serial turns avoid that particular divergence by moving the waiting before the second edit.
Shared values · readers spanning an update
Should an existing reference see the next edit?
An in-place edit changes the meaning of a held reference. A retained successor avoids that shift by paying for another value and a policy for its lifetime.
Memory ownership · a disconnected cycle
Can two unreachable objects keep each other allocated?
A positive incoming count is not the same as a path from a declared root. Testing the latter requires a correct reachability computation while the reference graph is controlled.
Reservation workflow · visibility boundaries
Is a failed workflow rolled back or repaired by new work?
The boundary that hides intermediate state can also hold resources for longer. Short local commits release that coupling but expose states that later compensation must address.
Distributed title edits · concurrent local writes
Can every replica agree after an important edit disappears?
A resolution rule can remove divergence by removing one update. Preserving alternatives instead transfers work from automatic agreement to explicit semantic choice.
Software dependency · reset after automatic interruption
What must be true before a tripped connection is restored?
Stopping the flow and restoring it are different decisions. Passage of time may fit a self-clearing fault model but does not establish that a persistent cause has been corrected.
One actor · an illustrative request meter
Does a calendar reset forget usage that just happened?
Fixed-window resets discard recent usage from the previous window. A rolling window removes that edge effect by retaining enough timing information to count across the boundary.
Acoustic interface · qualitative energy paths
When is reflected energy protection rather than wasted delivery?
A boundary that transmits a desired input may also transmit unwanted disturbance. Improving coupling is not a universal objective independent of what the receiving side should experience.
Segmented panel · normal loading and an existing crack
What useful path does a damage barrier interrupt too?
A discontinuity that interrupts a crack path also changes the path carrying normal load. The extra interface must be paid for and validated; segmentation is not a free layer of protection.
Optional computation · downstream demand
Who waits when deferred work is finally needed?
Removing computation from the initial path can put it directly on the later response path. Whether that move helps depends on both demand probability and the cost of waiting at demand.
Single worker · an arriving short request
Should a new request interrupt work already running?
One worker cannot serve both jobs at once. Moving B into the middle of A’s execution transfers waiting and adds scheduling work rather than creating capacity.
Concurrent cache misses · one result key
Do two misses need two copies of the same work?
Sharing an in-flight rebuild reduces work duplication by introducing ownership, joining and waiting. The result must be genuinely interchangeable for all joined requests.
An invented shared recording archive
How many independent permissions must one use assemble?
The exhibition needs both permissions. A single refusal is enough to prevent the combined use, even when every physical component is available.
Two optional uses of a club photograph
Can someone authorize one proposed use without the other?
Combining decisions reduces the number of choices but removes the two mixed permission states. Splitting the choices preserves those states and increases tracking obligations.
An invented club supplier selection
Does revealing an interest change who gets to decide?
Disclosure changes what others know. Recusal changes who decides. These are different interventions, and neither proves the resulting choice is unbiased.
An invented club event-allocation rule
When can a challenge reopen the same decision?
The same reopening edge that permits correction can return a settled-looking decision to dispute. Removing that edge after a boundary leaves some later objections without this remedy.
An invented shared workshop agreement
Who resolves a circumstance the written rule leaves open?
Changing the specification boundary moves cases between a written-response path and a discretionary path. It does not make unforeseen cases disappear.
An invented club’s customary late meeting
Does public conformity reveal what people privately endorse?
Silence protects the individual from immediate exposure while leaving others unable to distinguish approval from reluctant conformity.
An invented neighborhood workshop
Can one person satisfy two fixed duties at the same time?
The issue is incompatible location at a fixed time, not simply too many hours. Removing the overlap requires changing a demand or who bears it.
A deliberately simplified two-site balance
What disappears when a persistent import stops?
The same directed transfer rescues the sink and binds its persistence to the source. Disconnecting removes the obligation and the rescue together.
Two stipulated succession mechanisms
Is the current stage enabling the next one or blocking it?
Both interventions act on the occupant, but the consequential path runs through the conditions it changes. The sign of that change determines whether retention helps or hinders.
An invented workshop borrowing convention
What carries the rule to a newcomer?
A fixed common text makes the rule easier to establish, while tacit adjustment relies on people to carry, interpret and reproduce it.
An invented club anniversary display
What survives when different memories enter a public record?
Selecting one public account creates a coherent institutional voice. Retaining incompatible attributed accounts preserves the disagreement and leaves more interpretive work unresolved.
An invented workshop supplier negotiation
When does showing an alternative put it at risk?
The evidence that makes the alternative credible can also reveal enough for the incumbent to respond to it.
A small invented diffusion motif
Should two contacts reach two people or reinforce one?
A fixed two-contact budget cannot simultaneously give two recipients two distinct sources. Reach and reinforcement use the same contacts differently.
A toy adjustable control panel
Can one setting fit both declared operating ranges?
In this toy the two usable ranges do not overlap, so no single fixed height serves both. Adjustment can cover both ranges at different times, at the cost of a movable mount and setup work.
An invented panel and frame
Which connection must come apart when a part is recovered?
A connection chosen for integrated service can be costly to undo. A connection chosen to come apart imposes fastening, access and verification obligations during service.
A toy reader and checker
How many module boundaries does one format change cross?
A boundary that looks natural by function can cut through knowledge that must change together. Moving that boundary trades familiar separation for a larger shared change unit.
A toy live software inheritance tree
Which descendants receive a repaired default?
The downward link that saves repeated definition also carries a parent repair to descendants. A local override limits that reach by leaving the common source unchanged.
Four invented detector observations
Did the detector improve, or did its rule move?
Moving a cutoff changes which scores trigger action. It does not improve the separation already present in those scores.
An invented two-part total
What made one explanation unique?
A new channel costs measurement effort; a restriction can save that effort but makes uniqueness conditional on the restriction being true.
Booking a hypothetical event room
Will the answer arrive while it can still change the choice?
Waiting can improve the evidence while consuming the opportunity to condition this action on it.
Answering a question with three letter cards
Is moving the pieces wasted motion, or part of thinking?
External manipulation can reduce mental demand while adding motor effort and dependence on a faithful, available substrate.
A hypothetical catalog renames one item
Where should a rename be absorbed?
Descriptive keys save interpretation work but couple reference to the description; an opaque key transfers that work to maintained resolution.
Two editions of an invented handbook
The same reference to the same what?
A broad identity can absorb revisions but cannot promise unchanged content. A narrow identity preserves that distinction while multiplying records and references.
Three invented readings with one large value
Which change should move the summary?
Resistance to an extreme comes from making some magnitude changes irrelevant. That is useful only when those changes are not the intended signal.
A hypothetical panel choosing between A and B
How many independent clues does agreement contain?
Early visibility can transmit real information and can also turn later agreement into repeated use of the same information.
An invented counter with a stated range rule
What disappears when a blank row is dropped?
Dropping the gap simplifies the record but changes which observation states remain available for inference.
A small exact divisibility proof
What do four successful branches have in common?
Case splitting can make checking routine while expanding bookkeeping and hiding a unifying relation; a common argument needs a suitable insight.
Two invented fitted-model candidates
Can a better fit pay for greater complexity?
A penalty cannot promise the hard limit; a hard limit cannot use a fit improvement to justify exceeding it.
Three invented numeric records
What happens when near-neighbor links become a class?
Pairwise nearness need not support one-class-per-record grouping. Closing chains supplies transitivity by introducing additional within-class identifications.
A schematic program-halting question
What can a timeout actually conclude?
An unbounded simulation preserves eventual positive discovery but may never finish. A finite budget terminates the investigation by accepting an unresolved result.
Two jobs occupying one and three time units
Typical for a job, or typical for a moment inside one?
A convenient time encounter weights a job by its duration. Equal job inclusion needs a job-based frame and may require following jobs to completion.
A toy comparison across two workshop shifts
At which stage does the known difference enter?
Blocking constrains allocation before results exist. Later adjustment saves that allocation constraint but requires adequate data and defensible modeling.
Two possible questions before a room choice
Which possible report would make you act differently?
Attention and evidence-gathering effort can buy precision inside an unchanged action region, while a coarser report about another attribute may separate the actions.
Replicated cluster · three voters becoming five
How can membership change without two independent deciding groups?
Overlapping membership lists do not imply that every old majority intersects every new majority. The transition must impose its own coordination discipline.
Hash-based placement · three destinations becoming four
Why can adding one destination move keys that already had homes?
A count-dependent rule changes its arithmetic globally. A ring can localize the ownership change, while introducing explicit placement metadata and balance concerns.
Structured records · declared member-order equivalence
Should field order change the comparison fingerprint?
A normalization rule gains matches by deliberately erasing distinctions before fingerprinting. Whether those distinctions are irrelevant is an application contract, not a property of the hash.
Ideal sampled tone · a declared finite bandwidth
Should fast variation be removed or recorded more densely?
Filtering reduces the bandwidth presented to the sampler. Faster sampling instead increases the record’s ability to distinguish that bandwidth; neither choice is equivalent to averaging the ambiguous record later.
Component specification · a fixed reference value
Which side of the reference should receive a limited allowance?
With the width held fixed, shifting the allowed band toward positive deviations removes allowance from the negative side. A one-sided specification gains a different conforming set rather than a universally larger one.
Shared record · two editors and a monotonic version
Should another writer wait, or should stale work retry?
The two arrangements put the coordination cost at different points: waiting before protected preparation, or rejecting and repeating work when an optimistic commit discovers a changed version.
Inventory record · advisory display and binding reservation
Must a display pay the same ordering cost as a reservation?
Different operations on the same record can need different observation contracts. Relaxing the display must not silently relax the atomic reservation or turn the stale display into a promise of availability.
Scene save · two surfaces sharing one mutable material
Did the save restore equal materials or the same material?
Value equality immediately after loading does not establish identity equivalence. The difference becomes visible when one of the apparently equal materials is changed.
Fixed conflict path · greedy label assignment
Does a three-label result mean three labels were necessary?
A locally available choice depends on earlier assignments. A valid greedy coloring is an upper bound on the required palette, and ordering can change that bound without changing the conflicts.
One-dimensional lookup · an arbitrary cell boundary
Can the closer point live outside the query’s cell?
Being in the same index cell is not the same as being geometrically close. The partition makes one subset cheap to visit but cannot itself certify that the nearest answer is inside it.
One indexed key · equality, range and successor queries
What does an index know about the keys next door?
The same indexed field does not imply the same access capabilities. The auxiliary structure must preserve the relationship the query needs.
Contiguous array · four invented appends
Which append pays for moving the earlier elements?
Growing on demand saves early reserved space by leaving some future operation responsible for allocation and copying. An average cost does not describe that operation’s burst of work.
Two logical streams · four transmission slots
Does full service when alone survive a simultaneous peak?
Borrowing improves use of noncoincident demand without increasing physical capacity. A peak rate observed in isolation is not an unconditional promise to every stream at once. Borrowing also requires demand-aware assignment machinery; the two-slot joint-demand service is identical in both arrangements.
Parcel route · fixed departures and a deadline
Does a connected route provide an on-time itinerary?
Aggregating the transfer location collapses its earlier and later states into one node. That simplification can connect legs that the parcel cannot actually take in sequence.
Idealized porous boundary · a size-only rule
Can one wider opening distinguish two equally sized carriers?
When the selected mechanism responds only to size, equally sized carriers share its admission result. Widening that pathway gains useful passage and unwanted passage together.
Two-hop transfer · accidental relay-memory change
What if data changes after one check but before the next is created?
Recomputing a check at every boundary can reset the reference after an intervening change. Coverage depends on where the reference begins and whether it survives unchanged, not simply how many checks passed.
Toy command interface · a tolerated legacy spelling
What breaks when a receiver finally enforces its written rule?
The written specification has not changed, but the accepted input set has. Tightening the receiver therefore removes a real communication path rather than merely cleaning up unused text.
A committee choosing one proposal
Which part of a ranking should determine the collective answer?
The two rules use different information from the same rankings. Broad second-place support can outweigh a larger first-place bloc under one rule and be ignored under the other.
Three members and three proposals
Who controls the sequence when pairwise majorities cycle?
A cycle supplies no proposal that wins every pairwise contest. A sequential procedure must start somewhere, and that starting point can determine the final result.
Two crews choosing two work slots
Can equal individual chances avoid joint collisions?
Removing collisions requires dependence between assignments. The shared device must be trusted, available, and followed; equal marginal chances alone do not provide that coordination.
A four-member equipment repair club
What does a pool redistribute when the total loss stays fixed?
Before the draw every member faces the same uncertainty. After it, the members with no repair pay into the pool while the member with the repair pays less. Ex ante symmetry does not erase ex post redistribution.
An invented equipment protection agreement
How much outcome cost remains with the person choosing a hidden action?
Full coverage removes the operator’s loss exposure but also its loss-related incentive. Partial coverage restores that incentive here while charging the operator for some unlucky outcomes.
Joining an invented workshop club
Does a fee and an unpaid time requirement select the same people?
A cost in money and a cost in time are not interchangeable for applicants. Either can fund a genuine need while excluding someone who has the other resource.
An invented network of collection points
Should the next site overlap existing access or reach new users?
Overlapping reach can supply choice to an existing user, but that overlap does not count as a newly covered person. The union of reachable sets differs from the sum of site counts.
A physical prototype with two active modules
What does a prototype leave outside the test?
A narrow test can be correct about everything it includes while missing a failure outside its scope. Integration includes the interaction but adds construction and diagnostic work.
Three workshop modes
Is counting transitions enough to cost a schedule?
Changing order can save setup work but move a job later. A lower transition bill is not automatically a better schedule if it violates timing or dependency requirements.
An owner, a manager and a reviewer
Does oversight remain independent when the agent selects it?
Delegating reviewer selection can exploit the manager’s knowledge while creating influence over scrutiny. Keeping appointment with the owner removes that particular dependence but requires the owner to find and support a competent reviewer.
A toy qualification display
What happens when the cost of imitation falls?
The same cost that excludes imitation can also burden legitimate signalers. Lowering that cost can improve access while removing the selected signal’s capacity to separate types.
A freely available town reference map
Does collective financing require collective production?
The financing problem does not settle the production question. Bringing the work inside offers direct control but requires internal capability; contracting it out adds a production boundary and contract-management work.
An invented runoff route
What happens outside the protected site?
A local barrier can protect A without absorbing the incoming flow. Upstream capture addresses the selected shared source but requires suitable capacity and control beyond A’s boundary.
Two source groups and two local audiences
Is the intermediary supplying a connection or doing interpretive work?
The broker can add useful interpretation while becoming a dependency and potential filter. Direct ties remove that pass-through dependence, but the audiences must supply the missing interpretive work themselves.
A donor-supplied materials store
How long can recipient performance stay normal after inflow stops?
A store delays the visible consequence of lost inflow; it does not restore the donor. Drawing it faster preserves near-term service while bringing the first zero-service period closer.
A toy two-member repair fund
What happens when participation depends on a private type?
The original fee reflects a two-member average. If the low type declines, that average no longer describes the members who remain. Keeping both in the pool avoids this selection change by imposing a transfer and limiting individual refusal.
Comparing two models of dated rewards
Does moving both rewards closer preserve their ordering?
The simple constant-ratio model excludes this kind of timing-only reversal. A model that allows it can describe a different preference pattern, but creates a conflict between earlier plans and later choices.
Two clients receiving a document
Does everyone have an option, or do they share one?
Per-client choices can avoid conversion but multiply maintained artifacts; a common option requires a format usable by every included client.
Three binary indicators in a stipulated probability model
Can all pairs look independent while the triple is constrained?
Pairwise margins omit higher-order constraints; full joint records grow with the number of variables.
A toy eligibility register
What changes when entry requires either of two qualifications?
The gate makes the selected universe more relevant to entrant questions while changing the relation between the two attributes.
Invented success counts for two task handlers
How can A lead in each group while B leads overall?
A single rate combines performance with the mix of work. Exposing strata adds detail and requires meaningful group labels.
Four invented hypothesis-test results
Which collection of claims does the error promise cover?
Broader family control lowers the per-test cutoff; separately scoped control does not inherit a combined 0.05 guarantee.
Four labeled tokens placed in three boxes
Do we know a pair shares a box, or which pair?
The counting argument is short and assignment-independent but does not return the concrete pair needed for retrieval.
An invented expression reader with an ambiguous grammar
What rule chooses the structure of 2 + 3 × 4?
The same unparenthesized message cannot deliver both meanings. A familiar convention for one audience can surprise another.
Three invented units built under part number P
Does the failed unit leave the population, or remain as a failure?
Membership and conformity answer different questions. One common label can hide a change of population.
Two invented prospects under two declared value maps
Does averaging the units give the same ranking as averaging their value?
A probability distribution alone does not fix a choice; averaging after a nonlinear value transformation can reverse its ranking.
A toy choice with linear outcome values
What changes when the probability itself is unsettled?
A point estimate permits a sharper ranking; a worst-case range policy can forgo gains when the pessimistic endpoint does not occur.
Four fixed measured values grouped into bins
Did the observations move, or only the cuts?
One conventional grid is simple to maintain; varying it adds comparison work but reveals a degree of freedom that changing width alone misses.
Two stipulated measurement designs for one fixed quantity
Can the same average carry different uncertainty?
A second reading can be cheap while retaining common error; reducing that coupling can require another instrument and fresh calibration.
Sending a direction through a two-symbol code
What prior agreement lets a version tag be read?
A fixed scheme saves per-message metadata but constrains change; versioning adds metadata and a stable bootstrap convention.
Two current orders naming the same owner
Where did the lookup work go?
Removing the read-time join introduces more write targets; the same fact has not stopped depending on its authoritative owner record.
A declared toy garden rule yesterday
What does “if the sprinkler had been off” hold fixed?
The same changed antecedent can be reached by overriding a downstream action or changing its upstream cause; the consequences need not match.
A three-state publication workflow
Does “still editable” mean after one step or every later step?
A short-horizon guarantee can be sufficient for the next action but cannot be promoted into an all-future promise without examining later transitions.
Staged work · three ready items
Can later items finish sooner while each path gets longer?
Parallel stages shorten the interval between completed items, not necessarily the elapsed time from an item’s start to its finish. The extra stage capacity and handoff protocol have costs.
Asynchronous work · one awaited event
Where does unfinished work live after a call returns?
Returning early removes the live call frame that would otherwise track the obligation. The pending task must retain its own control state and cleanup responsibility.
Pure recursive calculation · one request
How many times does one request solve the same smaller problem?
Sharing collapses repeated occurrences in the call tree into the same retained subproblem. The retained table and its lookups cost memory and bookkeeping even when the calculation is small.
Signal encoding · fixed two-bit indexes
Where should the same four signal levels be spent?
Concentrating a fixed number of levels improves some local errors by leaving other values farther from their nearest representative. There is no source-independent best placement.
Two-point circular blur · one weakened mode
What does recovering a weakened signal do to its error?
The missing contrast and its measurement error arrive in the same weakened mode. A lower inverse gain shrinks both, so noise restraint costs noiseless fidelity.
Nested job · child file inside a workspace
What must close before a parent scope can be released?
Both policies close the child before its parent. They differ in whether unfinished child work is abandoned through a supported unwind or allowed to finish while the parent resource remains held.
Record lookup · selected observable
Can an unchanged answer still reveal a secret?
Skipping work produces a useful speed difference and a revealing trace. Flattening that trace adds work when the match is early.
Query construction · values and operators
Where may a user change the operation?
A fixed template cannot express the legitimate either-condition query. Supporting it adds a control input and an evaluator contract that must remain distinct from ordinary values.
Illustrative storage cell · a useful metastable state
Should the lower-energy state be reached more easily?
The same barrier that protects the higher-energy record also obstructs intended resetting. Well depth does not specify either the record’s value or the barrier-crossing requirement.
One-dimensional walk · a lower boundary
Does touching the boundary end this trajectory?
Absorption makes first contact terminal; reflection preserves participation by changing outward motion. These are different boundary mechanisms, not interchangeable approximations of one fixed mechanism.
Two-dimensional vectors · lossless representation
Did the signal simplify, or did its coordinates change?
The count of nonzero coefficients depends on the basis. Making diagonal patterns sparse makes the ordinary-axis vector (1, 0) dense and requires decoding ordinary components.
Finite precision · four ordered values
Can changing parentheses change the computed sum?
The intended real-number operation associates; the implemented rounded operation does not. Removing serial dependencies can change intermediate rounding and the final answer.
Event records · one observation point
Does “the same events happened” mean the same history?
Set union makes opposite arrival sequences equivalent by discarding order. Retaining order preserves that distinction and makes sequencing part of the record contract.
Two state coordinates · one bounded update
Which new targets does another actuator make reachable?
The shared actuator ties two coordinates together. Adding a new direction of intervention costs another actuator and control path, while its magnitude limit still bounds reach.
Physical model · length and acceleration
What can the units determine before calibration?
The units constrain exponents but do not supply the dimensionless factor. Ratios can cancel that factor; absolute predictions cannot.
Adaptive signal path · recorded gain state
What changed: the input, or the scale of the reading?
Adaptation changes the mapping from input to output. Omitting gain makes the record lighter but leaves the inverse ambiguous; recording it adds metadata and synchronization duties.
Two output channels · changing total
What stays constant when the total input doubles?
An amount and its fraction share a changing denominator. Once input changes, the two invariants cannot both be preserved.
Two applicants and two studios
Can two stable assignments favor opposite sides?
Stability rules out a mutually preferred defection; it does not choose which side receives its favorite partners. Here the two sides cannot both get every first choice.
Two items with complementary value
What disappears when the bid language only permits single items?
Independent item clearing cannot act on a package bid it does not admit. Admitting packages makes overlapping bundles compete jointly and increases the general clearing problem.
A small exchange using public profiles
Should a fresh profile inherit the conduct record?
Breaking the identity link protects separation from the old public record while also preventing that record from governing the same participant’s future treatment.
A promise near the end of a relationship
What still makes breaking a promise costly at the final encounter?
A future benefit disappears when the relationship ends. A separate forfeitable stake can survive that horizon, but it requires resources and an effective enforcement rule.
Two questions about one intervention
Did the action help, and could it have helped more?
One baseline measures help supplied; the other measures improvement forgone. Substituting one for the other changes the sign without resolving control, foreseeability or a standard of responsibility.
A team facing a different task mix
Can the team assign both jobs at the same time?
A list of skills does not say whether distinct workers can cover concurrent jobs. Added cross-training widens the feasible assignments but costs training and continuing practice.
Two coupled modules being upgraded
Can the route between two working versions stay usable?
A staged upgrade creates an intermediate running state that a complete replacement can avoid. Its compatibility must be established independently of the two endpoint systems.
One transferable resource, two possible holders
Does reaching the same user erase the starting assignment?
An efficient final use does not determine the distribution of its value. Moving the initial entitlement changes who can demand a payment for agreeing to that use.
Two ways to make the same item
At what volume does a fixed setup repay its lower unit cost?
The setup cost is spread across actual output. A volume below the crossing point cannot realize the larger-order advantage.
The same three suppliers, different order weights
How much supply disappears when one provider fails?
Changing the weight distribution changes both the stipulated purchase cost and the amount tied to each supplier. Counting supplier names captures neither.
Two partners investing before an unspecified decision
Whose investment is protected by the right to decide later?
The same residual authority protects its holder’s preparation while leaving the other party only the guaranteed share. Delegating the gap does not affect incentives only after the gap appears.
Two producers in a deliberately simple model
Does choosing first change what the other producer chooses?
An early announcement is insufficient: the first quantity must remain fixed. Binding it lets A choose with B’s downward-sloping response in view, while sacrificing A’s ability to revise later.
Distribution after a stipulated trade-related gain
Does a larger total mean every person received more?
The total of 24 is compatible with A losing 4. Paying compensation changes the distribution and B’s retained gain even when it leaves the total unchanged.
A flawed work item passing through a chain
Should the response move faster, or should propagation move slower?
Containment here depends on the relative arrival times, not the response time alone. Speeding the response consumes readiness effort; slowing the transfer also delays legitimate work.
A simulated forager using a stale cue
Which side of the broken cue–value link should change?
Changing the environment can spare agent retraining but reverses a real environmental change. Changing the agent can preserve the environment but requires a reliable update path.
A four-node route network
Should an ordinary-time shortcut remain for an unusual failure?
The connector is harmful to the modeled ordinary equilibrium but useful in the specified failure state. An equilibrium comparison alone cannot price that reserve.
A seller choosing one or two marketplaces
Must both sides belong to more than one platform?
Seller multi-membership can reach buyers who each remain on one platform. It duplicates seller-side work and does not merge the two platforms or make the buyer groups interchangeable.
Four invented labeled points
Which one-dimensional view keeps the distinction needed later?
A single retained coordinate cannot preserve both independent directions. The objective decides which differences survive.
Two coefficients in an invented orthogonal fitting problem
Can two soft penalties favor different kinds of simplicity?
Penalty shape changes the kind of solution favored; adjusting a weight is a separate choice and cannot be treated as a neutral notion of simplicity.
Two normalized attributes of catalog options
What makes the same candidate become the nearest match?
A weighted comparison makes priorities explicit but embeds them in every nearest-match decision. Equal weights also encode a priority choice.
Combining two independently prepared drafts
Which precedence was required, and which did the list add?
A linear extension respects the original dependencies while adding comparisons; preserving partial order requires a consumer that can manage a ready set.
A toy experiment with three two-level factors
Can an A effect and a B-by-C interaction look identical?
The fractional design makes two analysis columns identical. Separation requires more combinations or an explicit assumption about one of the effects.
Reviewing a short spoken presentation
What is lost when the identity cue is also part of the performance?
The same signal carries useful performance evidence and a possible identity cue. Removing it narrows the judgment that can be supported.
A small historical panel used to plan an evaluation split
Which unit is absent from the fitting evidence?
Holding out whole people improves identity-level separation but leaves fewer identities for fitting. Splitting within each person preserves that coverage but cannot support an unseen-person claim.
A toy readiness rule with two alternative routes
Which cases can a one-way condition decide?
A one-way condition decides only one side. Using it as a complete classifier would reverse an implication and mishandle valid alternative routes.
A stipulated normal measurement process
Why does one interval shrink while the other keeps a wide floor?
More observations reduce uncertainty in the mean but do not remove the variability of a new reading. A narrow mean interval cannot replace an outcome interval.
Four bounded scores, with two unobserved
What does the observed part determine about the whole?
A point requires a restriction on the missing portion. Keeping all bounded completions avoids that restriction but can leave too wide a range for a decision.
An invented binary message protocol with shared context
Can very little uncertainty on average still require three bits on some occasions?
A small expectation does not bound the largest per-message requirement. Fixed slots simplify length handling but spend space in already-determined contexts.
Two explicit starting beliefs for a contingent hypothesis
How far does the same finite evidence move two positive priors?
More prior mass for H must come from Not H. It increases responsiveness to supportive evidence but weakens the starting rarity claim; desired responsiveness alone does not justify the prior.
A deterministic cycle observed through three labels
Can the same current label have two different next steps?
Merging the two A phases saves state but loses a predictive distinction. Recovering it requires a richer state and access to the phase, not merely labeling the coarse process memoryless.
An invented machine with a controllable relay
What effect remains when an intermediate step is held fixed?
Controlling the intermediate variable changes the causal question. A direct-path test cannot be reported as the full operating effect.
Two invented populations measured on the same point scale
How can the smaller point gain become the larger standardized difference?
A common standardized unit facilitates some comparisons but embeds the selected denominator. It cannot replace the substantive meaning of the original point scale.
Four fixed benchmark items and two reference versions
Which part of a score change came from the model, and which from the labels?
Cross-version scoring requires preserved model outputs, old labels and a meaningful common item set. Contemporary scores are cheaper to maintain but cannot alone attribute a historical change.
Graph exploration · seven-node tree
How much unfinished breadth should the explorer hold?
The frontier is live work, not just a list of final visits. Breadth first peaks at four waiting nodes here; depth first peaks at three, but visits depth two before finishing depth one.
Asynchronous results · two independent producers
What has ended when the combined promise rejects?
A result contract can settle before all producers finish. Waiting for an outcome record retains visibility of partial results but delays the combined report.
Event history · deterministic updates
Can the current value be rebuilt from what was retained?
A final value can summarize many different histories. Reconstruction requires retaining the inputs and update rules that the summary discarded, plus work to apply them again.
State updates · variables versus time instances
Can a feedback process have an acyclic representation?
A cycle among reusable variable names and an acyclic chain of time-indexed instances describe different levels of the same process. The latter needs a chosen horizon and grows as that horizon grows.
Graph partition · six equal work units
What should a cheap separation leave on each side?
The raw minimum can isolate a peripheral unit. Requiring equal part sizes excludes that cheapest cut and changes which boundary is admissible.
Finite search · explicit conflict explanation
Which earlier choice does this failure actually constrain?
A failed check tells a simple search that one triple failed. A sound conflict explanation tells a stronger search that every triple with A = 0 fails because C has no other value, regardless of B.
Continuous signals · a specified quadratic response
When does combining signals manufacture another signal?
Processing a sum through a nonlinear curve differs from adding separately processed outputs. The shared path saves a processing unit but generates a difference-rate component inside the permitted band.
Continuous strip · prescribed bend zones
Where should the required turn occur?
A fixed turn over a shorter active length has greater average curvature. Keeping surrounding regions straight therefore concentrates the local bending demand.
Droplets · fixed volume and positive surface cost
What does subdivision add when the amount stays fixed?
Subdivision preserves volume but increases area. The geometric gain in contact is inseparable from the added surface-energy term under the stated constant surface cost.
Reaction configuration · mixed and immobilized catalyst
Where should the reusable facilitator stay?
Mixed contact moves the separation problem after reaction. Immobilization builds separation into the material path but transfers design work to access, residence time and flow through active sites.
Ideal string wave · fixed ends or a through path
Which locations must stay still as the wave evolves?
Counterpropagating components can cancel at fixed boundaries and reinforce inside. A one-way wave lacks that cancellation and therefore needs boundaries that allow the shown motion.
Discrete linear updates · two coupled states
Does eventual decay tell us how high the response first rises?
The coupling changes near-term amplification without changing the two eigenvalues. A long-run stability verdict therefore cannot choose the coupling for a peak-sensitive application.
Independent components · known transit speeds
Should different travel times be read or compensated?
Compensation can remove the very arrival-time separation that a measurement uses, while adding delay and depending on the accuracy of the component-specific model.
Encoded positions · boundary ambiguity and bit corruption
Which possible wrong read is the code designed to handle?
Nearby valid labels help a transition stay local, but separate valid words are needed to detect corruption. Redundancy changes the set of possible valid words and the track budget.
Four-bit operation · stipulated equal unit delay
Which bit positions have hardware at the same time?
Time sharing moves bit positions through one unit. Parallel width duplicates the unit so those positions need not wait for each other.
Paired sensor states · additive error model
Which error disappears when two readings are subtracted?
Subtraction rejects what the readings share. It also retains the difference between what they do not share, including read noise and offset drift.
Bracket languages · two explicitly different contracts
What must a reader remember before a closing symbol arrives?
The richer language introduces unmatched context whose depth is not bounded by the language. A fixed local pair rule avoids that memory obligation by excluding nesting, not by pretending to validate it.
Two prices for the same fictional admission
Does identifying the buyer also identify the eventual user?
A purchase check separates buyers, but a transferable admission reconnects them after purchase. Binding use to identity removes that route while also removing legitimate transfer.
Two fictional foragers and two resource pools
What happens when the niche that avoided competition contracts?
Specialization removes the shared-resource contest in this toy, but it also removes the specialist’s route to the other resource. Less overlap is not an unconditional persistence guarantee.
A fictional award with two places
Can someone lose a rank-based award without performing worse?
The same two awards cannot simultaneously be reserved for the local cohort and assigned by the combined ranking. A rank-based reward depends on the cohort boundary as well as the score.
A stored intention to send a parcel update
Should the reminder follow the calendar or the situation?
The two cues coincide only if the event occurs at the scheduled time. A clock cue can fire without a changed situation; an event cue can leave a scheduled report unsent.
Two random proportional changes to a toy quantity
Can average growth rise while most short paths end lower?
Full exposure has the higher ensemble mean, yet three of the four two-step endings are below the starting 1. Partial exposure reduces those losses while also reducing the upper ending and the mean.
The same two firms viewed at two resolutions
Did the units improve, or did their shares change?
Both exact accounts sum to the same change, but the unit boundary decides which term receives it. A firm-level “within” contribution does not prove that individual plants improved.
A finite steady-flow heat-exchange model
Can the cold outlet be warmer than the hot outlet?
Changing flow direction changes the temperature profile without changing the stipulated conductance. In the selected site, feeding the cold stream from the far end requires an additional insulated routing run; the extra recovery has a layout cost.
Two fictional workshop service charters
Who, if anyone, owes the help needed to act?
A permission to act does not by itself impose any duty on someone else, let alone an affirmative service duty. Adding that duty supports a different entitlement while constraining staff discretion and requiring provision resources.
A fixed three-step practice task
Which part of a successful task came from the learner?
Help that makes the task attainable also contributes to the observed success. Withholding it exposes independent capability but can stop completion and is not automatically the right teaching move.
A toy two-speed update rule
Can responsiveness change while the stored answer stays the same?
Changing the rule of change can suppress another update without changing the current stored state. The same restraint that limits repeated updating can also block a useful stimulus.
Two conventions in one declared encounter game
Can the lower-payoff convention resist a larger disruption?
Both conventions pass the small-invasion test. A offers higher collective payoff but requires A’s share to stay above two thirds for the declared growth rule to favor it; B is favored below that boundary.
A finite second-price auction with a fixed reserve option
Whose report sets the winner’s payment?
Individual truth-telling incentives do not rule out a deviation that benefits the winner while leaving the losing bidder’s own allocation unchanged. A reserve bounds this payment channel while excluding some trades; it does not eliminate the coalition incentive.
Two feasible sites on one toy straight road
Does the best total also serve the most distant member?
The count-weighted optimum is correctly calculated and still leaves the minority member with the longest burden. Changing the objective changes the selected site while moving costs onto nine others.
Six voters using the same plurality rule
Can the tally reward a report that is not the voter’s first choice?
A plurality ballot is both a report of support and an instrument that changes the outcome. In this fixed profile, using it for the latter purpose suppresses a first-choice count even though that preference remains.
One peer session per person in a four-person workshop
Do member counts tell you who actually meets whom?
A session assigned to a same-craft partner cannot simultaneously be this person’s cross-craft session under the fixed one-partner rule. Composition and degree counts alone do not show which kind of interaction the schedule creates.
A toy shared project costing 10
Can a project worth building still need money from outside its users?
The individual critical payments can sum to less than the project cost even when the total value justifies provision. Equal shares cover the cost when accepted, but can stop a project whose total value exceeds cost.
Two candidate populations with the same initial mean
Can stronger selection create a value that is not in the population?
Selecting more sharply cannot move a uniform population beyond the sole score it contains. A spread with the same mean supplies a higher candidate, but also includes a lower one and loses its spread when copied from the maximum.
Two plans for a busy or quiet workshop day
How far could a choice fall behind the best forgone plan?
The fixed probability forecast favors A, while the worst hindsight comparison favors B. Neither objective determines whether the other is the right concern.
Two prepared routes and one opponent’s block
Does the opponent see the rule or the realized choice?
The hidden draw preserves an expected payoff floor but requires both routes to be ready and a genuinely independent, unrevealed choice. A declared deterministic route exposes the very choice the opponent can counter.
Two people exchanging a truthful one-bit report
Who knows that the other person received the fact?
A delivered receipt changes A’s knowledge at the cost of another message, while leaving uncertainty about that receipt’s own delivery at B. Finite confirmations do not create the entire infinite tower.
Two graded descriptions of an invented room
Does repeating the same condition add any force?
Both operators are established fuzzy conjunction choices, but minimum is idempotent and product is not: applying the same graded condition twice has different semantics.
An empty or single-dot two-by-two board
Should turning the input turn the answer too?
An invariant count cannot later locate the dot. Retaining a mask makes the rotation available to later steps but carries more state and a coordinate convention.
A square-root operation in an algebra tool
What must change before a negative number has a square root?
The broader operation does not find a previously overlooked real root. It changes the codomain, so a caller that requires a real quantity cannot simply consume the new answer.
Three objects and two tag-search contracts
Why can the same empty tag list mean all objects or none?
The empty input is valid in both modes. Its opposite results follow from conjunction versus disjunction, so a user cannot infer the result from the empty list alone.
Supplying at least three units of capacity
Does rounding a relaxed answer find the best whole-lot choice?
The relaxed problem is useful precisely as a relaxation. Its fractional optimum cannot be ordered, and rounding its chosen type does not by itself solve the discrete choice.
Two ideal Gaussian pulses
Can the same pulse be made narrow in both time and frequency?
The two displayed widths belong to the same pulse, not independent measurement settings. Within this Gaussian family, sharpening one spreads the other.
A slider with two invented measurement procedures
What state remains after the instrument has finished?
Correcting a reading for a known disturbance can recover the earlier value without undoing the disturbance itself. Accurate inference and preserving the future state are different obligations.
Two names for one beacon and a report about Lena
Can a name be replaced everywhere just because it names the same object?
A shared referent supports substitution in an ordinary object statement. It does not by itself license substituting names inside an attributed belief. Supporting those reports requires a richer contextual account.
A square whose target area is two
When is being close enough different from representing the exact root?
A tolerance check and an exact identity are different contracts. Increasing approximation precision does not convert rational membership into membership of the irrational target itself.
Three electrostatic nodes with a declared reference convention
Which changes belong to the potential reference and which to the voltage differences?
A reference convention can simplify an intermediate description without changing voltage differences. Centering uses the whole selected node set; anchoring privileges one node and may leave larger coordinate magnitudes.
A component class and one later inspection result
Can adding evidence remove a conclusion while leaving its premises true?
A useful default inference is not a deduction. New case evidence can defeat the conclusion without contradicting the class-rate premise, so a system that uses such conclusions must track their provisional force.
Six people choosing between two invented destinations
Are we evaluating an untouched prediction or using it to change the outcome?
A forecast can be used as an observation or as an intervention. Once its publication changes choices, the resulting outcome answers a different question from the unchanged-plan baseline.
A job assignment with one stable readiness bit
What must move when the decision owner cannot distinguish the relevant states?
Correct ownership requires access to the information that distinguishes outcomes. Keeping authority centralized does not remove that requirement; it moves the burden into a communication path.
