The Diagnostic Story

Symptom: Opinion or behavior converges sharply without new evidence of comparable strength. Participants privately express uncertainty or dissent but publicly follow the crowd. Popularity, rank, or price becomes its own reason for further movement, and decision variance collapses too early, then reverses sharply when a contrary fact becomes undeniable.

Pivot: Identify the social or popularity signal driving imitation, preserve private evidence before exposure to that signal, and redesign the visibility, timing, framing, or aggregation of crowd cues so actors can decide from independent evidence rather than from momentum alone.

Resolution: Convergence is slower and less brittle when evidence is weak, private signals are preserved before aggregation so group judgment improves, and dissent or minority evidence remains visible enough for review — without destroying the useful information that social signals do carry.
