Purpose

Cost-Asymmetric Preference Revelation Design prevents a system from treating visible expression as a clean measure of held preference when some preferences are much more costly to voice than others. The archetype is useful when public agreement, silence, endorsement, or compliance may be a cheap performance rather than a faithful signal.

The target prime is preference_falsification: actors voice a cheaper preference than the one they privately hold, causing the visible distribution to diverge from the held distribution. This draft treats that gap as a design problem rather than a moral failure of individual courage.

Core pattern

Protected Revelation Channel The protected channel gives actors a lower-cost way to surface preferences. Depending on stakes, this may require anonymity, confidentiality, aggregation thresholds, independent custody, differential privacy, delayed release, or legal protection.
Aggregate Divergence Report The divergence report turns private-public mismatch into usable common knowledge without exposing vulnerable individuals. It should include uncertainty, method limits, and safe granularity. A good report says, “visible expression is not a reliable measure here,” without telling powerful actors exactly whom to punish.
Recalibrated Expression Path Once the gap is known, actors need a way to update public positions without catastrophic face loss. A face-saving update path prevents the initial public falsehood from trapping people in continued falsification.

Important design parameters include the severity of expression cost, whether risk is social or coercive, whether actors can trust the channel custodian, how granular aggregate reporting can safely be, whether actors can game the private mechanism, whether the relevant preference is stable or still forming, and whether public expression can be recalibrated without creating a new orthodoxy.

Invariants to preserve

The most important invariant is that preference revelation must not become compelled exposure. Actors should not be forced to reveal sensitive preferences to the very system that made expression costly. The second invariant is interpretive humility: even protected private data is measured under constraints and should be reported with uncertainty. The third invariant is safety after release; if people are punished after aggregate divergence becomes known, the system will learn to falsify again.

Use and non-use

Use this archetype when visible expression is being treated as consent, demand, legitimacy, or preference distribution, but the cost of expression varies sharply. Do not use it as a pretext to expose hidden minorities, compel ideological confession, or claim that all public agreement is fake. Sometimes public agreement is real; sometimes privacy is legitimate; sometimes preferences are simply unsettled. The archetype applies when expression-cost asymmetry is strong enough to make public signal unreliable.
